About this mod

This mod replaces Valheim terrain textures with much higher quality textures. It also features a brand new shader written from scratch to make the most of the great textures. The shader has improved weather and lighting effects, along with additions that are not present in the original shader.

First of all a brief description of why this mod even exists. I work closely with Willybach on his HD Overhaul texture pack, and since the first Ashlands update replacing the terrain textures has not been possible due to changes in how the terrain textures are stored. Realising this was the case the only way to mod the terrain textures was with an external mod.

The first version of the mod quite simply just replaced the textures, but it was soon discovered that the vanilla shader would cause very bad shimmering with the higher detailed textures. So a brand new custom built shader was created over many hours and this is the result.

INSTALLATION


Extract the contents of the mod into your bepinex plugins folder - "SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Valheim\BepInEx\plugins"
If you are using a mod manager such as R2 it is important that you extract the contents of the mod into your profile folder manually, failure to do so will result in the mod loading incorrectly.

To uninstall the mod just remove the ValheimHDTerrain.dll and the HDTerrainData folder from your plugins folder.

RECOMMENDED MODS


While this mod can absolutely be used on its own, it was designed and built to be used with Willybachs HD Overhaul mod. You can find this mod here Willybachs HD Valheim His mod is currently hidden while it is updated, but should be uploaded very soon, so keep an eye out for it.

While this is likely a shameless plug I also recommend using my shader overhaul mod. While it's very subtle, this further improves the lighting effects of this mod.

MOD FEATURES


As well as replacing the terrain textures the mod also has built in improvements to the grass and flora objects in game. It fixes the LOD pop in of grass at random positions, and it also allows you to set the grass draw distance, and the overall flora density. There is also a feature not present in the vanilla game to add caustic reflections where there is water. These can be controlled with the following console commands.

grassdrawdistance X
Where X is an integer value, 40 is the default draw distance, but you can go as high as you like with this. Please note that extremely large draw distances can affect performance considerably. I recommend you start with 100 and work from there to find a value that works for your setup.

grassamount X
Where X is a float value. This command will allow you to increase or decrease the density of the grass. It can often be useful to offset the performance hit of increasing the draw distance by lowering the overall number of grass objects drawn. What's important about this value is that it is a modifier and not a hard value. So a value of 1 which is the default will be the vanilla density of grass. A value of 0.5 will halve the density, and a value of 2 will double it. You can also use any values inbetween to fine tune the setting. I do not recommend you use very high values as this will have a significant impact on performance.

Water caustics is a very new feature of the mod and as such is considered a work in progress at this time. I've added these commands so you can disable the effect if you don't like it.

TERRAIN TEXTURE PACKS


The mod was designed to allow for easy swapping of the textures used, this version uses textures that I put together, Willybach will have his own set of textures for use with his texture pack. When his mod is back online you will be able to download the terrain textures along with his full texture pack. Instructions on how to do this can be found on his Nexus page linked above.
