About this mod

Native HDR, reverse engineered into Valheim. This isn't AutoHDR, it's a rewrite of the post processing effects to leverage all the detail and precision of the game's internal HDR rendering, which results in an incredibly detailed HDR output that will blow away AutoHDR or RTX HDR. An HDR screen is highly recommended, SDR presets available.

Native HDR reverse engineered into Valheim. This isn't AutoHDR, it's a rewrite of the post processing effects to leverage all the detail and precision of the game's internal HDR rendering, which results in an incredibly detailed HDR output that will blow away inverse tonemapping solutions like AutoHDR or RTX HDR. An HDR screen is highly recommended, though SDR presets are available for use with the other features.

Out of the box, this mod upgrades and adapts Valheim's stylized look to HDR in a very faithful way. It'll be the game you know and love, but with more detailed and bright highlights and reduced banding (when stylistically unintended). If you want something better tuned for the capabilities of HDR, I've made a couple presets that make great use of the game's lighting in HDR. If you've got an HDR screen, this is a must have mod for you, whether it's for a vanilla look, the presets I made, or using the advanced color grading features to finetune your own look. And if you're on an SDR screen, you can enjoy a vanilla look and get access to the post processing adjustments. You could even swap out the game's tonemapper for RenoDRT and customize the look at a higher quality level than a ReShade shader can give you.

Features

  • Native HDR rendering and output
  • Presets targeting different looks
  • Suite of color grading tools to customize to your own tastes
  • Post processing intensity adjustments (bloom, chromatic aberration, and sun shafts)
  • Workaround for the blurry Grass/SSAO (bypass the SSAO filtering step, recommended with AA enabled)

Installation

  • Download the latest ReShade with Addon Support (6.3.3 at time of writing). If you already use ReShade, skip to step 3 (also be warned that HDR may not be compatible with your preset).
  • Run through the installer and install to the Valheim executable, selecting DX11 (no shaders required), OR use 7-Zip to open the reshade installer .exe as an archive, extract reshade64.dll to the Valheim directory, and rename it to dxgi.dll.
  • Download the mod from this page and extract it to the Valheim directory. You've done the previous steps correctly if you see valheim.exe, dxgi.dll, and renodx-valheim.addon64 in your game directory.
  • You must play the game in DX11 mode (the regular, not Vulkan option). I may support Vulkan later on.
  • In-game, make sure Bloom, Chromatic Aberration, and Sun Shafts are ON. There are sliders in the mod interface to disable them should you wish, but they're required to be enabled in the game menu for the mod to function.
  • Done! To tweak the mod, open the reshade UI (Home key) and look for the RenoDX tab. If you're an SDR user, make sure you select one of the SDR presets, otherwise the image will look horribly wrong.

About RenoDX

RenoDX, short for "Renovation Engine for DirectX Games", is a toolset to mod games. Currently it can replace shaders, inject buffers, add overlays, upgrade swapchains, upgrade texture resources, and write user settings to disk. Because RenoDX uses Reshade's add-on system, compatibility is expected to be pretty wide. Using Reshade simplifies all the hooks necessary to tap into DirectX without worrying about patching version-specific exe files.
