Site Design Survey and Feedback Group

  • Comment
How do you feel about the design of the Nexus Mods website? Since our sites current design went live in 2017 we’ve been listening to all the feedback, both good and bad, we've received from the community. Armed with that and having now filled our UI/UX designer position at the Nexus Mods office, our designer has been tasked with going through the current site layout and looking for ways it can be improved.

We’ve spent some time looking at the analytics on our website, with a focus on the user's flow and how they navigate through the site. Although useful, this information can only tell us so much. To get a true measure of the user's experience on our site, we would like to give you the opportunity to tell us what you think about Nexus Mods.

Initially, we’ll be focusing on the Nexus Mods homepage, navigation and mod pages. Starting out with a very short survey to gauge how our community feels about the experience we are currently offering.

The survey is now closed. Thank you for your feedback.

The survey will run from 15th April 2019 to 26th April 2019. When giving your answers please try to be as constructive as possible. Honest feedback is welcome, but if you don't like something we'd love to know how you think it can be made better.

At the end of the questions, you’ll notice we mention a Design Focus Group that will run a short time after the survey closes. Based on the responses we get from the community we’ll be hand-picking users across a wide demographic of site usage to participate in focused discussions about particular site features and functionality.

Our hope is to cast a wide net to capture the opinions of all types of users including new users, veterans of the site (who went through the last redesign with us), mod authors, image/video share users and those who like to engage with others in the posts section or forums.

It doesn’t stop there though. In the future, we may ask the community for more feedback on different parts of the site or invite additional users to our focus groups. Eventually, we plan to turn the designer’s creative eye to more areas of the site and Vortex. Make sure you pay attention to our site news for more on this over the coming months.

Thank you for participating!

At the skyrim page, typed in the search bar ,alternative, looking for the mod Alternative Start, got every single thing with alternative in it except the mod Alternative Start. Typed bodyslide, got every single thing with bodyslide but not the mod Bodyslide itself. Looked for Better Vampires, got every single better or vampire listing but not the actual mod Better Vampires itself. This occurs whether I'm using the tablet or the PC. Most of the time I open a new browser tab and google the mod which usually gives me the correct Nexus mod url. Is it the search engine, is it my specific Nexus settings or does the search need a refit? How about the tablet issue where I begin typing in the search bar and it responds so quickly that I'm racing to type the full word after the first three letters or waiting after it brings up everything within the first three letters. Then finish typing the rest of my search word. These things are a huge inconvenience. Are these things yours or mine? The main Nexus page is great, it could use some de-cluttering though. The individual game pages need some serious de-cluttering. The only thing that should be on a mods main picture is the mod title. The two large pictures and the five below in hot files should be in a marquee format of some kind. The giant strips of real estate on either side of the page.... lotta space there. The new design covers up alot of what a modder is presenting with so much statistical mumbo jumbo, give the real estate back to the creativity of the authors. Thanks you guys....

      Hey dirvish,

I followed your journey with the quicksearch and I got this result:

I would imagine this means you have one of the tags on the alternate start mod page blocked. I would check your content blocking settings: https://www.nexusmods.com/users/myaccount?tab=content+blocking

Are you saying on the tablet it only shows results for the first 3 letters of the search? If so what type of tablet and which browser are you using? The search regenerates your results almost every keystroke.

Thank you for the feedback on the game homepage, I'll be sure our designer sees it.

Well, I have this problem too where the search function often does NOT show the mod I'm searching for but only some (not even all) mods that share a similar name.
And I have no content blocking active at all.

For example on the Skyrim Special Edition page "zzjay's wardrobe" only shows two translation mods when I paste the term and click 'search'
Though if I type it in manually, the preview shows the correct results. Including the actual mod.
(by the way .. the preview doesn't activate if I just paste the search term)

@SerNoisy: I just typed "zzjay" into the search and the wardrobe mod came up as the first result. So you must have something blocked that it requires.

Your site is super complex... and wonderful, by the way. The one thing I'd wish for would be to see "update available" tags in my history list. That being said, I do enjoy browsing the entire F4 archive from time to time just to find the updates which might have been posted. I maintain local links for many mods, but not all. If my history did that, oh man. But, having done some web design myself back in the day... I'll say it again. Your site is awesome. I have zero complaints.

proper cache handling for comments, if anyone edits a post he made, the content doesn't update properly, multiple edits get mixed resulting in the post getting completely messy, there is something seriously wrong with your caching behaviour on the site.

TOTP 2FA when? Email 2FA is so 2010 xd

Also, there is still no way to choose not to get update notifications for images shared by authors we follow

I want to see the author's mods

I do not want to see their images

I think the miniplayer on the bottom right corner ("popular stories") is quite annoying.
The content is always the same (except for the few times an ad is playing).
It is partially blocking the view of the site content (especially if you zoom in on the page)
And you have to wait a couple of seconds until the (X) pops up to close the player.

If I'm in the right place for forum feedback, as well, I'd like to ask for another search category. Often, I'll see something that reminds me of a thread I saw days, or weeks, ago, but I have trouble finding it again, to add the new information. When I type, for example "normal map" in the search box, I can search "this forum," meaning I have to do the search on Skyrim Special Edition Creation Kit and Modders, then again on Skyrim Special Edition Mod Requests, and then on Skyrim Special Edition Mod Troubleshooting, then ...Mod Talk, etc. The other option is to search on "Forums," in which case I get everything from Stardew Valley to Fallout 4. When I try to use advanced search, Skyrim (oldrim) is right at the top of that tiny little white box, but finding Special Edition is very difficult in there.

What I'd ask for is to expand the options to "this forum," then game-specific forums, like "Skyrim Special Edition forums," and then finally just "forums." In that way, we could keyword search for "normal maps" in all of the Skyrim Special Edition forums at one shot, without having to filter through all the other games, or try to navigate that little white outline box in advanced search.

    Thanks in advance.

Occasionally on both mobile and desktop, switching tabs won’t work on a mod page. For example I’ll be on the Description tab and click for Files which makes the loading gear pop up but it doesn’t actually change pages.

I have had very poor luck with your search engine. A good 30-40% of the I get nothing for results but I have an easy fix. I use Google with "Fallout 4" lead in

I wish I had remembered to add this when I did the survey; but it would be awesome if, when viewing images (under the Images section, or in a specific member's profile), you had the option to see them in a slideshow like when you view the images with a mod. There have been multiple times I would've looked at many more images but didn't feel like opening 89 images individually.

If there's already a way to do this, someone please DM me, because I haven't figured it out. :-D

It's not currently possible but is a good suggestion. Thanks :)

ABSOLUTELY AGREE. I am confused as to why this is a thing in the first place. When we look at mod page images its a slide show but not for the other ones? No logic on that one.

Why would it not be possible? We can/do view as a slide show with everything else, just not this. That doesn't seem logical.

Man if there's a notification to a comment would be nice, And would be nice when checking mods and then changing desc, file, etc it only reload a specific element in the web not the entire page.
