Freelancer Mode: Third/3rd Person/External View

Changes the external view (F2) to somewhat mimic the feel of the 2003 game Freelancer.

View Modes: (Select One

  • Freelancer Mode - Center View: Fluid Movement
  • Freelancer Mode - Shoulder View: Rigid Movement
  • Elratie's Fighter Mode - Center View: Very Rigid Movement

(switching between modes with the mod manager Vortex)
Updates:
  • Jan 2024: Added Elratie's Fighter Mode
  • Feedback? Suggestions for camera or movement styles are welcome!
Many things about the camera and how the ship feels can be adjusted. Ship placement on the screen and how the camera responds to the ship boosting, pitching, yawing, rotating and linear movement in 6 directions.

Installation:
Extract the file to your X4 installation folder: X4 Foundations\extensions
or use a mod manager like Vortex.

Future Plans:
I want to learn how to edit the hud more, add speed, shield and other UI elements to the external view. But I read a comment saying the game renders the shield and speed hud as physical objects in the cockpit view, so it might be tricky.
I recently learned that Egosoft will completely revamp the External View in the 7.00 update coming sometime in 2024. They'll even add all the hud indicators too.
Use my mod in the meantime :) I really hope they do a good job and make this mod obsolete.

Note:
I recommend setting Glow Quality to off in the graphics settings, otherwise the engine light will be blinding:

I am using the FLAT UI mod in my screenshots (Except in the before and after photo, that is original UI):

ABOUT FREELANCER:

Lord'Cyber here saying hi from 2003.

The game is abandonware now and completely free, and an awesome HD rework mod has been released that also updates the game for modern resolutions.
Servers are also online, if you're lucky you'll run into another player.

It's too bad there's no one playing, because the great thing about freelancer was never about the singeplayer story, it was a one-and-done type thing.

It was the multiplayer.

Online activity and communities in 2003-2009 were amazing. The Clans, the politics, the wars, the trade routes were all player clan controlled in their respective spaces. It was amazing and the combat was and still is top notch.
Yes at the top there were few good weapons and most players really had the same fit and ship, but that also made the outcome of 1v1 battles very skill based.
And I remember that fondly, the adrenaline rush of the jousting, the passing of two ships, engine kill to turn around faster. Translation movement (ASWD) were extremely important to "wiggle" out of enemy fire while jousting. The missiles, mine and countermeasures.
It was all very tactical and fast paced.

I remember our clan even shot the back tails of our Eagles off, because that increased the turn rate of the thing, giving us a massive advantage in fights.
