If you’re a fan of, or is curious about, the Duel Monsters era of Yu-Gi-Oh!, then this mod is for you!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Soul Legacy is a mod for the game Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution.
The goal of this mod is to make an all new game, with a sense of progression that’s actually rewarding and challenging. With a focus on the cards from the very beginnings of the Official Card Game (OCG), with Duel Monsters! Aligned with that goal, this mod also aims to give a reason for some of the weaker cards in the game to exist.

This mod brings new campaigns with all new duels, each carefully crafted with those objectives in mind!

The selection of cards chosen for this mod was made considering their first appearance, in a game or anime, and also the actual release date of the cards from the Official Card Game (OCG). There are 842 cards, from the very beginning of Duel Monsters!

Heavily inspired by the games Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses.

For the mod to work correctly you need to start the game with a new, fresh save file!

You have to delete your old save file before starting this mod. Remember to make a backup of it, first!
v0.3.0 requires you to start a new save, before playing it. It is not compatible with any previous versions of the mod!

This is considered a Beta version of the mod. The characters for each duel are just PLACE HOLDERS, meaning I haven’t actually assigned characters to the decks yet. The duels are all in the game, but I need helping testing them and polishing out whatever details are needed to make the game’s progression as good as it can be. So please, download, play it and do share whatever feedback you can. After I get all the decks right and in the proper progression order, I’ll release version 1.0. Then, after that, my focus will be on finishing the story and assigning the appropriate characters to each duel.

Features:
  • Uncensored card arts (with a semi-Uncensored option).
  • Custom campaigns with all new duels, with focus on meaningful progression and real sense of accomplishment.
  • Changed some User Interface elements and visual effects that appear during duels.
  • Some text fonts were changed for more thematic cohesion.
  • New music (from Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses).
  • New sound effects (from Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories).

Roadmap of future content:
  • Music. (Done!)
  • Sound Effects. (Done!)
  • Text fonts. (Done!)
  • Uncensored cards. (Done!)
  • Gather feedback, polish and solidify each deck’s proper position in relationship to the others. (In progress)
  • Custom booster packs. (Done!)
  • Add Duelist Challenges. (not yet started)
  • Story. (In progress)
  • User Interface during duels. (In progress)
  • Visual effects during duels. (In progress)
  • User Interface in menus. (Not yet started)
  • Custom Icons. (In progress)
  • Custom menu backgrounds. (In progress)

  • Make version 2.0 of the mod, with more cards, from newer Duel Monster releases. (Not yet started)

IMPORTANT NOTE!

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist - Link Evolution there are many ways to cheese and abuse the game, to easily earn DP or cards. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to remove those flawed systems from the game, so it is strongly recommended that you do NOT use any of these abuses when playing this mod.
The main appeal of the Soul Legacy mod is the rewarding sense of progression you get by playing it as it was intended to. If you choose to abuse the game to earn rewards more quickly and easier than you should, then you are cheating yourself out of the unique experience this mod is designed to provide. Every single duel in this mod is carefully made considering the player's natural power progression at that point in the campaign, when facing that opponent.

Simply put, if you abuse reward mechanics in the game, then you won't get the experience you were meant to get from this mod.

How to install:
1. Go into your "Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution" folder (the same folder where the game's .exe is in) and make a backup of the following two files:
YGO_2020.d
at
YGO_2020.toc

2. Download the mod. It's a .7z file. You're gonna need a program like 7Zip to extract it.
3. Extract the contents of the .7z file into that same folder, where the game's .exe is in.
4. A window will pop up, telling you there are already files with that same name in the folder. Choose to replace all those files.
5. Done! Just launch the game and you'll be playing the mod.

How to uninstall:

1. Go into your "Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution" folder (the same folder where the game's .exe is in) and delete the following two files:
YGO_2020.dat
YGO_2020.toc

2. Restore the backup of those same two files you made before installing the mod.
3. Done!

FAQ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How can I start the game with a new, fresh save file?

Navigate to the folder where your game's save file is stored. Usually it's in the following location, on Windows:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[steamID]\1150640\remote\

[steamID] is your personal Steam User ID. The number "1150640" represents the game's ID.
In that folder, rename the file "savegame.dat" to "savegame.dat.bkp". By doing that you're creating a backup of your original save file. If you ever want to revert back to your original save file, simply rename the "savegame.dat.bkp" file back to "savegame.dat".
Once you have renamed your save file, you can just start the game normally. The game will tell you it couldn't find a save file and will ask you if you want to start a new save; choose YES. Then the game will start a new save file for you, which will now be the new "savegame.dat" file in your save folder.

For more details regarding your save location, you can refer to this link https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6736-QEIG-8941

What is this mod?

This is a modification to the game Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist - Link Evolution, that focuses on delivering a completely new campaign with a truly challenging and rewarding progression. You're going to start your journey with very weak cards and have to defeat ever more powerful opponents, to win new cards and become stronger. The cards used by you and the other duelists are all from the early Duel Monsters era of the game!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How should this mod be played?

With a heavy focus on deck building, the player progresses through a challenging campaign to unlock ever more powerful cards and new card combo options. Although there is a "Story Deck" you can play in each duel, that is not the intended way to progress through the campaign in this mod. The player should always duel using their own, custom decks.
The progress through the campaign is going to more closely resemble a journey than a sprint. Beware that there won't be many deck-building options available at the start of the game, for intentional design reasons. You will have to progressively unlock more and more cards to build different types of deck, as you defeat new opponents!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How can I know which cards are present in each Booster Pack?

You can download the file "Booster Packs - Card List", under Miscellaneous files, in the download section. That file lists all cards that are present in each booster packs of the game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why are some cards displaying old version artwork?

All versions of this mod bring back the original, classic artwork for the following cards:
  • Blue-Eyes White Dragon
  • Dark Magician
  • Red-Eyes B. Dragon
  • Polymerization

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the semi-uncensored version of the cards?

Based on personal preference and nostalgia, I like some of the old, censored cards better. To me their art is too classic to be changed. So, I made a version of the mod with all cards uncensored, except those select few.
Here is a list of the cards that I left censored:
  • All five pieces of Exodia.
  • Tomozaurus
  • Dian Keto the Cure Master
  • Spellbinding Circle
  • Kanan the Swordmistress
  • Black Magic Ritual
  • Monster Reborn
  • Ultimate Offering
  • Soul Release
  • Magic Jammer
  • Mystic Tomato
  • Shadow of Eyes
  • XYZ-Dragon Cannon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The start of the game is a bit boring.

The AI doesn’t know how to behave too well when dealing with monsters that have a lower Attack value. It's just the first few duels that are like that. Once the AI starts playing with monsters that are a bit stronger it starts being a bit smarter.
Also, the start of the game is very limiting with regards to strategy options the player has, but once you start earning more cards the duels will get more interesting. That being said, the start of the game being more slow is in line with the design intentions of having the game rewarding your time invested progressively.

Guiding Design Principles used in the making of this mod

WARNING this section may contain spoilers! If you enjoy discovering a game's features for yourself, through gameplay, don't read it!

-Above all, game progression in always in first place. Every decision is based, primarily, on a principle of giving the player a meaningful sense of accomplishment through meaningful rewards.
-Grinding is a core feature to this mod. It is a requirement to progress through the campaign. Rewards that take effort to obtain tend to hold more meaning than easy giveaways.
-Allow for game systems, and as many cards as possible, to have their own space to breath; a moment where they can be useful. Not only does this approach enrich the game, by limiting the existence of "trash" and "useless" cards, but it also contributes to a natural game progression.
-For proper progression, some game systems are going to have to be limited to later stages of the campaign. For example, the start of the game will feel somewhat limited in terms of deck building options (limited options for Mill or Burn decks, for example), but these options will gradually start opening up to the player, as they progress further on.
-Avoid having the same monster card appear in more than one AI deck, as much as possible.
-Vary the pool of magic cards and trap cards that appear in the AI decks, as much as possible.
-It's OK for the pool of magic cards and trap cards to remain somewhat similar within the same campaign Act.
-Main focus on deck building. Although there are Story Decks to each duel, they are not the intended way to progress through the campaign and serve only as a side challenge. The player should always duel with their own decks.
-Sometimes in Yu-Gi-Oh!, you find a card that you really like, but you seem to never be able to find a good place or a real opportunity to use it. This mod aims to enable such opportunities for every card that's present in it. Sure, no card can be useful forever, but one of the central goals of this mod is to give as many cards as possible, as much time as possible to shine.
