In case of you get an error with wrong size of dds: Go to paint.net or other texture editor and export it as DXT5 and with mipmaps and it will have the right size
Try first export original helmet texture by "Extract this File" option then replace original texture with my and then try to use "Import This File from DDS".
1.) Make a backup of "sharedassets3.assets", It's in the 'mysummercar_Data' folder. --This is important because if the mod causes an issue later, you can copy and paste this original file back in.
2.) Download UAE here:
Direct Download Link: ?https://archive.org/download/UnityAssetsExplorer/UnityAssetsExplorer.exe -Source: https://archive.org/details/UnityAssetsExplorer
3.) Run UAE.exe
4.) Click "Open Assets file"
5.) Find and Open "sharedassets3.assets"
(Again, ?It's in the 'mysummercar_Data' folder)
6.) Below the list of files click the white box (search box) type "Helmet" -It should highlight the file that we need.
7.) Right click 'sharedassets3/helmet_vision.tex' (in UAE) and select "Extract This File" -Now you have a "sharedassets3" folder in your downloads folder on your computer.
8.) Find the "helmet_vision.tex" from this mod and copy/paste it to the "sharedassets3" folder we created. -If you've done this all correctly it will ask if you want to replace the file, Choose Replace.
9.) Now go back to UAE and again right click 'sharedassets3/helmet_vision.tex' -Select "Import This File From DDS" -It finds the file on it's own, if you followed the steps - it worked.
10.) Now at the top of UAE click "Save as Assets File" -Select "sharedassets3.assets" -Yes, to replace.
That's it! The mod should be working in game now, but keep in mind it won't show on the mod menu.
I got "ERROR! Wrong size dds!" when clicking "Import This File From DDS." I tried it anyways, but it didn't work. Not sure why, though, since I followed your instructions exactly as you wrote them
edit: I'm just now realizing you made those instructions in 2020, maybe it's just outdated lol
It seems you also have to resize it to 1024x1024 for it to work. For anyone who struggled like me on how to export as DXT5 with mip maps: on paint.net just do "save as" then on a menu will popup with options, the top dropdown menu has an option for "BC# (Linear, DXT5)", then lower down there is a checkbox for "Generate Mip Maps". This method, plus Kushmode420's UAE instructions below, worked for me on the date of this comment.
i know im 3 years late but if you are too lazy then install texture pack importer tool put all its files into your my summer car folder go to unity_assets_files, sharedassets3 and then texture then put the file "helmet_vision.tex.dds" to this folder and run the program and your good to go. (atleast for me it worked like this and don't forget to backup your sharedassets3.assets file so your game dosent break)
As of this time, if the file says its too big go to... https://www.aconvert.com/image/dds-to-png/
Follow these instructions:
Click "Choose File" Choose the mod that you want to insert into the game change "Target format" to DDS Leave Image quality as empty Click "Resize image" choose "change width and height input this "1024x1024" Click "Convert" wait and download
if the name is different change it with the original.
After conversion, follow implementation as instructed with UAE
So none of these methods have worked for me. With the Unity Assets Bundle Explorer linked below, if you export the texture then try to import the modified DDS file it says it's the wrong size. I guess it has to be the same size or smaller to work? Though it really should be smaller due to being easier to compress than the original, that is a best guess. Ultimately the best solution is probably a plugin (I don't know anything about how to develop them, but I think a plugin that replaces one texture is supposed to be easy to implement relatively speaking?)
In the meantime here is what I did if anyone else needs to reproduce it: First of all, I used Unity Assets Bundle Extractor instead: https://github.com/DerPopo/UABE/releases It doesn't have a proper import, so I simply couldn't replace the texture with this one. Instead I exported a raw of the "glass" texture (careful not to mix it with the material) and then I found the helmet_vision texture and imported the raw of the glass over it. This gives me a vision of a slightly dirty glass over the whole screen instead of being like the replacement texture here, but overall it works pretty well and still kind of fits the theme of wearing something as opposed to nothing.

Hopefully this helps someone. Have fun!!

For my case I found, I resized the image (on paint.net in my case) by 1024x1024 pixels, activated the mip and in BC3 DXT5.
Good luck everyone.
Follow these instructions:
Click "Choose File"
Choose the mod that you want to insert into the game
change "Target format" to DDS
Leave Image quality as empty
Click "Resize image"
choose "change width and height
input this "1024x1024"
Click "Convert" wait and download
if the name is different change it with the original.
