Seems working OK in AE (1.6.1170.0.8), used it with a vanilla follower in golden hills plantation (Needs to end "A farmer's life for me" for option to appear) and i was able to bring my follower with me again. (Remember to always create a prior Save and backup just in case)
So, I used this on GOG AE 1.6.659, and it's working for now, I can see/use the dismiss dialog along with the services (buy materials/furnishing, etc)...I'll edit the post in case the mod breaks on me later on.
Downloaded and tried both the ESP and the ESL version. Neither one works. Meaning that I am stuck with the housecarls of all 3 Hearthfire houses serving as both Stewards and Housecarls at the same time.
Was wary because of all the negative comments from people on AE, but this mod works great on SE. You can keep firing and rehiring stewards with no issues, and it really feels like a function that should have been and is now a part of the game. Well done!
This mod only has two lines, and the latest version is from 2018. If you don't know, Bethesda released the AE version in 2021 and broke "EVERY" mods. The damage is still not fixed and may never be fixed.

For those with AE having problems with Purple Hills Plantation, you can always just finish the quest and then you can fire your steward. It wasn't completing for me so I just used console.
You can check the stages with getstage ccvsvsse004_restorefarmquest
The stages go up in 10s to 70. Completed is 500. If you have a stage less than seventy, it's best to complete them one-by-one with setstage ccvsvsse004_restorefarmquest #
Replace the hash with the stage you want completed.
Just warily tried this after reading some of the mixed reviews but its working great. Not using AE. I used the esp version and added an esl flag in Vortex. Not sure why anyone would use the esl download version when the esp can be flagged with no issue.
I was able to dismiss a steward, hire them as a follower, add and dismiss a housecarl as a new steward, and then rehire the old steward, all with no issues. Also, there were no xEdit conflicts with my super heavy load order.
