Guys don't expect most modders to update to AE GOG. Most of the modders making mods have stuck with SE because we simply lose too many mods that will never be updated for AE+. The reason for this is that most modders can't be bothered to rewrite their code for AE when A) most of the community hasn't switched to AE and B) there isn't good enough reason to Switch to AE. With LE to SE there was a huge performance gain with the new 64 bit engine and it created a much more stable modding environment with greater capacity for mods and more complex modding builds. It was a godsend once fully adopted. AE on the other hand is just a bag full of problems with mediocre content that's mostly already been done (often better) by existing mods.
So most of us just either prevented our game from updating at all or did the unofficial downgrade patcher: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/57618
Using the "best of both worlds" option you can literally have all the AE content without the AE codebase issues.
Also you can prevent your game from ever updating by following this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/b158op/keep_skyrim_se_from_updating_safely_and/
The best thing GOG can do is to make the old game version 1.5.97 available as one of the install options. Then we'd see more of a mass migration to GOG. Because right now there isn't really very much reason to upgrade to AE+ or GOG if you know what you're doing.
Thanks for the link for making the manifest file read-only. I'd done everything else but also added that step to be sure. I like your assessment of LE to SE vs. SE to AE. Kudos.
It is GOG's own fault for modifying the game so that it point to different folder compared to the Steam version, causing compatibility issues, while all previous Bethesda games in GOG (heck i personally thank GOG for finally freeing Fallout 3 from GFWL) point to the same folder.
For Skyrim to be put on Steam store. (Update Version 1.6. PC (Steam): 5.3GB) The game engine itself had to be updated to the required .Net framework. This is why Mods were broken, and SKSE had to rewriten. GOG 1.6.659 was another aspect of having to be updated for SKSE. Why there's two versions 1.6.640, and 1.6.659 that are main games for different distributors. 1.6.640 is more stable, and more modded for. Wasn't just GOG at fault. 1.6.629 was a stopping point for some modders that lost interest in updating their mods that didn't supply source files for ready.
Case in point: This mod. Only works for 1.6.629 not 1.6+
AWESOME!!! It's not that no one cares, it's that I for one didn't see that or know about it lol. When I'm going through a mod list I search the search bar or sometimes google for the DLLs that SKSE says aren't updated....so I never found that lol.
Yeah, I had no idea it existed. I may have even seen it at some point, but passed over it because I didn't realize it was a replacement for No Crime Teleport RE or had anything to do with it.
At least once it is done for the GOG version there are no forced updates anymore. But Sadly ATM there is no downgrade possible because this version is the first on GOG.

Except there's a still a decent handful of excellent SKSE mods that wont work on 1.6, and some that never will.
