You have to go into the 'advanced' tab first, and check the box next to 'Mod Developer Mode'. Then the Updater tab will be shown. (forgot to add this Info thanks to @mynamehellooooooo for reminding me.)
go to Tools -> Download and Extract the Script Extender ... go to Settings -> Open Preferences -> Updater -> Update Channel: Devel -> Select Version: Latest (or which version you want)
don't forget to save in the top left corner (disk symbol)!
now ScriptExtender should use the latest "Development Version".
Hi! I'm running an older version of the game and am trying to get Script Extender v11 to work with this version. How would I go about installing it? In BG3MM, it registers that I've got SE v11 installed, but when I launch the game from BG3MM, it always tries to update. Once the game is launched, SE doesn't seem to load with it.
Sorry if this isn't explained all that well but feel free to ask questions and any help is much appreciated ^^
Hi, did you try to launch the game without the Mod Manager?
like in, you set everything up with your mods in the Manager, ctrl+e (implements it in the game) and ctrl+s (saves the mod load order), then close the mod manager and start the game over the desktop shortcut for example.
Edit: I'll test your issue when I'm home as soon as I can. Re-read your post and I maybe find the solution for it, sounds familiar someone else had recently.
No I haven't I'll give that a go! Also, I just wanted to say you're amazing for taking the time to archive the past versions and respond to all the posts here ^^
Hi there, well I was able to recreate your problem in a way kinda.
What I did so you can follow me better:
1)
I installed the version you have right now, on my test bench pc, installed around 150 mods over the Mod Manager (although I don't know what you got on your side).
I started with Script Extender V9 to V11, the latest public released versions. By V11 I got the same message as you described.
Went directly up to V17 latest public release, issue was solved.
I used one of my back up folders with older versions of mods for troubleshooting, i'm not allowed to share them as of writing, in case someone is asking.
2)
Almost same approach as in 1) but this time I emptied/deleted the inside of the ScriptExtender Folder under AppData PATH: C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\BG3ScriptExtender
started the game twice, Issue was solved.
3)
The Shotgun Method, which I'm not a fan of mind you!
Back Up your saves, Mod Folder and Profiles from Larian AppData Folder
ctrl+alt+s or under file on the upper left corner, there you see save order as
clean deinstall the game, the Manager and delete Script extender Folder.
reinstall, launch the game once in pure vanilla.
put your backed up folders and files in place.
and it should solve your problem.
4)
What helped me once was (when I was fresh on Patch 4#), deleting the Script extender Folder under AppData and also the DWrite.dll from the Game folder in /bin
went to Steam -> Library -> BG3 -> manage -> properties -> installed files -> verify the integrity of software files.
downloaded manually BG3 Script Extender from Norbytes GitHub and also placed it manually into the bin folder
started the game once, closed it again in the main menu
went to BG3MM updated the script extender to the latest public version, no mods.
booted the game again and it worked just fine.
after that installed the mods as usual and placed my profiles and savegames back where it belong, no issues.
In this short amount of time is what I can tell you for now and I hope it can help you further.
Additionally: you can always switch between Script Extender Versions inside the Mod Manager but try a higher version and see if it solves your problem, if not you can always revert to the one you want.
I fixed this problem by downloading the appdata files and installing them. The crucial extra step is to delete the dwrite.dll file in \bin. Mine worked after that.
Hi, I've tried a couple of your methods (not the one that involved reinstalling the game) and they don't work. I'm able to boot the game without the error with newer versions if I MANUALLY downloaded appdata folders (as in from this page), but when I do this, the script extender isn't actually enabled. When I try to download the latest version the regular way, I get the same error. You mentioned verifying files on Steam; however, if I do this, it will update my game back to the latest version. So I'm a bit stuck here...
Oh sorry for the misunderstanding, thought you got it solved. Yeah I have a test Bench for troubleshooting with a Patch 4# Version of the Game. I'll look into it again today and get back at you with a step by step tutorial, sorry for the inconvenience.
"Hi, even after manually adding the folder, I still get this error. I've tried everything, from completely reinstalling the game to manually installing the script, and in the mod manager logs it says "Extender Local AppData folder not found at '%LOCALAPPDATA%\BG3ScriptExtender'. Skipping.". Do you have any advice? this is the error https://imgur.com/a/ZRQysuc
I found your Reddit post and will look into it and exclude the solutions others suggested already.
before I do, a few questions.
1) which system are you on? (Win 10, Win 11, Linux etc.) 2) You only want the 5e Spells Mod? (even then you need at least BG3 Mod fixer with it, for now) 3) also over which client you got your game from? (GOG, Steam) if you have a pirated Version (no judgement), the task to find a solution could be more difficult in certain cases.
I'm on win11, and i started low with the mods to test so for now only 3 mods need the script extender (5e spells, Cmap events and teleport to you) i already installed the mod fixer and improved ui and i'm on steam. btw ty for the ultra fast response
Just spent the last 2hrs trying to get this script extender to work with the BG3MM, all files are latest files, downloaded within the last 6hrs.
However, regardless of what I've attempted to do I am unable to find a fix or explanation for why it is not working (Past the script extender files being out of date with the bg3 patch). I am on windows, and using Steam.
Having downloaded, replaced, and redownloaded the DWrite.dll file, alongside the *.json files and norbyte bg3se folder from github, i have continuously received an error when attempting to save the load order informing me that I have mods requiring a script extender, and to use the 'Tool' menu to install it. This gives me a pop-up window of how to install the Script Editor, exactly the same way i have been for some time now. Clicking the 'Yes' prompt causes a short loading sequences before informing that it (DWrite.dll) has been successfully installed in the respective folder, however this results in no change from the previous state. Additionally, hovering over the error icon states that i am in fact missing the script extender (which has moments ago been extracted and supposedly installed successfully) and that there is "No installed extender version found". Note that this is all occurring post applying dev mode/channel permissions for the script extender.
If this is an issue which can be ignored (i.e. the mods will still be loaded, and it is just an internal error), that would be great, but others may experience this and require this information. However, if this in fact an issue which requires fixing (as it appears to be) assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Oh Wow thanks for your Info, haven't heard or read this kinda problem before. I will look into it.
Question from my side (maybe unrelated), are you on Win 11? A few of us dealt with a problem where Windows Defender just blocked or deleted .dll files from other sources and for most of 'em putting an exception in Win Defender for the whole BG3 Game folder worked.
I'm curious about what you posted and in my opinion is a serious frustrating Issue, please keep me updated.
Additional Question, maybe come off as stupid to ask you this but have you Refreshed BG3 ModManager after all Installation processes? Like in, you installed everything and BG3 MM was running and you didn't close it.
I am on windows 11, and following have selected the folder to be an exclusion. Additionally, I have refreshed bg3mm, and repeated all previous steps following excluding the folder. The result being unchanged from issue.
IMPORTANT: I had not at this point restarted the game since downloading any: mods, loaders, extenders, etc.; and decided to see whether this was an internal error due to the script extender not being integrated with my own game files somehow. After running the game through Steam the bg3se debug console was loaded alongside, and many mods which had an error seemed to be loaded correctly. Exiting the game and refreshing the bg3mm following this resulted in the errors being fixed and the bg3se file having been recognised and i believe to be the current version (v13).
I am unsure whether the issue was entirely due to having not run the game, or some combination of the above fixes. Regardless, it now appears to be working. Thank you for your assistance and recommendations for potential fixes. I hope this may provide assistance in future if others experience similar issues.
I'm glad everything works for you, no thanks needed, I don't feel like done much to help you. You managed on your own so hopefully it stays like that for you.
Your Post can still relate to someone out there who has similar Issues, so I'm also thanking you for sharing.
I've had a similar issue to this before, unfortunately it didn't fix itself like yours did. The ONLY solution was that one person, in an obscure random github issue, had uploaded the actual script extender files that the mod manager is supposed to download and install.
This entire problem could be mooted if Norbyte would just provide manually downloadable copies of whatever it is mod manager should be downloading but doesn't.
You wouldn't happen to have those files would you? I'm having the same issue and it baffles me as to why these file are gate kept lol seems like such a poor way of doing it but who am I to say.
go to Tools -> Download and Extract the Script Extender ... go to Settings -> Open Preferences -> Updater -> Update Channel: Devel -> Select Version: Latest (or which version you want)
Hi there,
Apologies for being really dumb (as is likely to be the case!), but when I open my (newly downloaded and installed) version of BG3 ModManager, when I click "Open Preferences" from the Settings menu after successfully choosing "Tools -> Download and Extract the Script Extender", I cannot see the "Updater" option anywhere. All I see is the "Enable Automatic Updates" check box in the "General" tab.
Hi, just to let you know, the 'updater' tab is not shown by default. You have to go into the 'advanced' tab first, and check the box next to 'Mod Developer Mode'. Then the Updater tab will be shown.
Thanks btw, your upload has removed my bg3mm error so it looks like it might work now.
I’m wondering how this is going to help. Literally the entire installation process is “put a DLL into the game folder”, and that then does the rest. If you don’t have the DLL in your game folder, having SE files in your AppData won’t do anything for you.
True but my Issue was that I did in fact downloaded the everything but somehow the AppData Folder stood empty, this fixed it for me.
Longer Explanation:
Had a fresh install without Mods, downloaded from here everything I wanted, got the Script Extender from Github and also the Mod Manager. Mod Manager said ScriptEx was V2 altough at that point it was V7.
deleted it from the bin Folder, downloaded it over MM said this time it's V1.
Found a post on reddit leading me to Norbytes Github Issues Tab, downlaoded the manuall install of DWrite.dll. Didn't work out either.
and after countless different approaches getting everything to work, this was the only thing missing, so I made fresh install no mods just the MM and downloaded the ScriptEx over the Manager booted the Game up and there was finally the Data in the AppData Folder.
But to be honest, I did the Shotgun Method out of frustration, I think it could work even when Mods are installed already.
For Vortex Users idk, for BG3 Mod Manager Users there where/is a couple of Issues regarding to that. Because ModManager checks the Version installed, and the Folder I uploaded has the Manifest Data and Version check in it.
The whole point is that process doesn't consistently work for a ton of people, myself included. I had to find a zip of all the files the SE downloads/installs and do it manually because for whatever reason it just never worked.
Where did you find that list? :) Despite this zip file here, my SE struggles with the "no version found for xyz" error and does not start. So I'd like to try a manual installation...
short reply from my side, I will be fully back on this after 3rd Jan.
To your Question, what List do you mean? Besides that, have you tried following the steps posted on the Sticky in this Thread?
If not, can you tell me if you using Vortex or BG3 Mod Manager, because there are different approaches to your problem. I'll try to help you as good as I can, after my Vacation.

Could I get some pointers please?
When you are in BG3 ModManager
1. On top, go to SETTINGS click on PREFERENCES or use CTRL+P (a Window should open)
2. You should see the UPDATER Tab there
3. check the UPDATE CHANNEL drop down Menu (it's the first one) and change into DEVEL
4. Select the Version you want and don't forget to SAVE in the upper LEFT Corner the blue Disk Symbol
Addition:
In the Preferences Window should also be the Script Extender Tab
2nd Box - ENABLE DEVELOPER MODE check that, it could be possible that's why you don't see the option.
Try that or get the Folder from the Downloads.
If nothing works come back here we figure it out somehow, hope this brings you forward.
Thanks btw, your upload has removed my bg3mm error so it looks like it might work now.
Thank you too, for the additional Info btw.
