Hi! I don't know about you, but I find Act 3 pretty overwhelming, and so I'm trying to fix that a bitβ€”starting with this mod!

This reduces the maximum amount of generic crowd characters allowed to spawn in Act 3.

There are so many of them, and they have pretty much infinite draw distance (I am going to see if I can fix that as well), and even if your game can process so many of them at once, it can still make Act 3 pretty overwhelming and difficult to navigate. And the amount of them allowed to spawn is actually kinda massive!!! Unreasonably massive, to be quite honest!!! Several crowd character spawners I saw had 30 crowd characters allowed to spawn from it, and that is just one of genuinely hundreds of other crowd character spawners. (To be fair, most other spawners had significantly less characters allowed to spawn from them, but still. 30 is...already a lot, and then theres so, so so many more spawners in general...Good lird.)

So! This mod aims to fix the just, general sense of overwhelm I and other people I know personally feel in Act 3, by reducing the amount of crowd characters in each area. It affects all areas of Act 3, and not just Baldur's Gate proper, so you should see the changes in Rivington, the Circus of Last Days, Wyrm's Rock Fortress, and so on.

This mod comes in two versions:
  • Less Crowd Characters - Half: reduces the amount of crowd characters to roughly half of the vanilla game.
  • Less Crowd Characters - None: removes all generic crowd characters entirely.

Only install ONE version at a time!

I will say that removing all crowd characters does make some areas of Act 3 feel pretty empty, especially the Circus of Last Days. But in most areas there's still plenty of other characters around! And if you still want Baldur's Gate to feel like a busy, bustling city (and the rest of Act 3 to feel the same), the version of the mod that halves the amount of crowd characters does nicely, but is still less overwhelming than vanilla imo.

The mod also has the added bonus of making videos in Act 3 easier to record, for anyone who'd like to do so πŸ˜… (For this videoο»Ώ in particular, I literally had to put something in the way behind my characters to get the crowd characters to stop walking directly through everyone...Which was especially unfortunate for the shorter characters. They uh...they're at a pretty...um. Not Ideal height. On body type 3. So, uh... That is also partially why I made this mod. Please stop walking straight through my guy's crotch, I beg...)

Things to know:

When first loading the mod, you might still see crowd characters.

This is particularly the case if you installed the mod mid-playthrough, and have already been to different areas in Act 3.

All you need to do to fix this is to go to camp, then leave it again.

You will likely have to do this for all areas of Act 3 you've already visited. This will reset the spawners! Since this mod functions by reducing the maximum amount of characters allowed to spawn, any already existing crowd characters will need to be despawned before you can see the changes. Just going to camp and coming back again will do the trick!

You may also have crowd characters spawning again after certain story moments, like after Gortash's coronation. No clue why this happens, but going to camp and leaving again will fix that in the same manner.

A note: I did test the mod pretty thoroughly in different areas of Act 3, and the mod looked like it was working properly everywhere I checked. But considering there's hundreds of crowd character triggers, there's always the chance I could've missed something. Let me know if you run into any crowd characters where they shouldn't be, or if the mod is affecting other things in Act 3! Only the crowd character spawners/triggers should've been included in the mod, but there's always the chance I missed something.

Another note: if you're hoping the mod improves performance, it still needs more extensive testing to tell if it does! At the moment, I'm not sure if it impacts game performance at all. (Aether also tested an earlier version of the mod for Patch 6, and it didn't seem to improve performance much...) But it does, again, help Act 3 be a bit less overwhelming overall (or, at least it does for me!) and further testing might show improvements. Definitely let me know if it helps the game run better for you!

The mod overrides the Act 3 crowd character spawners/triggers, which can be found in the following files:

//Data/Mods/Gustav/Levels/BGO_Main_A/Triggers/_merged.lsf
//Data/Mods/Gustav/Levels/BGO_WyrmsCrossing_C/Triggers/_merged.lsf
//Data/Mods/GustavDev/Levels/BGO_Main_A/Triggers/_merged.lsf
//Data/Mods/GustavDev/Levels/CTY_Main_A/Triggers/_merged.lsf
//Data/Mods/GustavDev/Levels/END_Main/Triggers/_merged.lsf

It will be incompatible with any mods that also edit the crowd character triggers. I'm not aware of any that do at the moment, but definitely let me know if there are!

Only the triggers for crowd characters were overridden, so the mod should be compatible with mods that edit parts of those same files, as long as the crowd character triggers weren't included.

Install via BG3 mod manager! Uninstall by deleting the mod.

It should be safe to remove mid-playthrough! All changes made by the mod should revert on uninstallation (but you might still have to go to camp and back to refresh the level and get the vanilla crowd character limit back!)

...As always, let me know if you run into any issues, and enjoy! 🌼

Thank you very much to Aimryax and Aether for helping test the mod and giving feedback on it back when I was first working on this for Patch 6 πŸ’—πŸŽΆ!!! Once again, you both are the best 🌟🌷🌈

Also, before you go, please check out these resources I've compiled.

I do link them on pretty much all my mod pages, but considering everything going on in the world, I wanted to highlight them. Please, do what you can to help, and take care of yourselves, ok?
