About this mod

NOT UPDATED
COMPATIBLE WITH v1.01 ONLY

Alucard becomes playable in Portrait of Ruin alongside Charlotte! He can use a lot of his Symphony of the Night arsenal (Crissaegrim, Mourneblade, Zweihander, Moon Rod etc.) and even has most of his spells recreated in the game (Dark Metamorphosis, Hellfire, Summon Spirit and Soul Steal).

Installation instructions at the end, but be sure to read the known issues section before reporting a bug!! (there shouldn't be anything major, as I've done a full playthrough myself and didn't find anything)

The design explanation section explains a lot of my reasons for doing things the way I did them.

DESIGN EXPLANATION:
-I ported over pretty much everything I could from SOTN (though, technically, I got most stuff from Harmony of Despair) and I only changed what felt necessary or what I couldn't properly reproduce. So the answer to the question "why did you change X?" will always be "because I had to".
-To avoid messing with balancing too much, I kept the SOTN stats on 99% of the weapons, even though Jonathan has weapons with a lot more ATK in PoR, so that might make Alucard seem underpowered at the start (especially in City of Haze), but I promise that's not the case. He's meant to be a more technical character and something between a mage (Charlotte) and a warrior (Jonathan).
-Many weapons have something unique to them (even a few that don't have it in SOTN, though the changes are subtle): all Maces can double-hit when you're very close to the enemy (so STR boosts can make them a lot more powerful, cause you double-dip), Greatswords have a lot of range and can easily hit behind/above them, Katanas have ATK power values that rival Jonathan's weapons but they incur a defense penalty, regular swords have a lot of special things like elemental damage or Mourneblade's Soul Steal on-hit effect or Gurthang's Dark Metamorphosis bonus, Punches and Knives attack insanely fast, the Combat Knife can easily double-hit, the Tonfa also easily double-hits but it's slower and has more range, the Crissaegrim is the Crissaegrim (lol) etc..
-Very basic swords (think the Falchion from SOTN, for example) are just as bad as they seem, because they're meant to bridge the gap for people who haven't found/dropped the actual good stuff. So if you're finding special weapons (eg Holy Rod), you're not expected to use them, just like you almost don't use them in SOTN either.
-Hellfire is an early-ish enemy drop, while the other Alucard spells are found as pickups. Soul Steal is a mid-late game pickup.
-Due to how the STR+ATK formula works in PoR, even though some weapons have different attack values, you might not see any change due to the way the rounding works (eg the Alucart Sword you start with has 1 ATK and the Short Sword has 2 ATK, but you're not gonna see any difference at level 1).
-There's a lot less variance in ATK power between the weapons, so even weapons that you find early on might prove very good under the right circumstances. For example, you can find the Holy Rod pretty early and it doesn't have much ATK, but if you use Charlotte's STR boost and STR boosting gear, it can be better than weapons that you find later against holy-weak enemies, cause you can double-hit with it up-close. So a lot of weapons stay relevant for a long time.
-Weapons and skills are more or less in the same place weapons and skills were in the vanilla game. So if an enemy normally drops a weapon, it probably drops a weapon with the mod installed as well.
-Alucard cannot slide, because he can't in SOTN and I don't like the solution they used in Harmony of Despair... And I want to create a proper wolf form in the future.
-Instead of a Long Sword for the poison sword quest, you now require a Were Bane, which is a common drop from a relatively common enemy

KNOWN ISSUES:
-Other modes (Richter, Sisters, Axe Armor) have all sorts of issues cause I'm using stuff from them, so if you want to play those modes, switch back to the original dra02.dll and alldata.bin files (keep backups).
-Some weapons are missing all special stuff that they're meant to have:
  • Sword of Dawn's summons (might do it in the future)
  • Katanas with swirly attacks (might do it in the future)
  • Muramasa scaling (might do it in the future)
  • Holbein Dagger's "minor crissaegrim" (it's just a Knife now, cause I won't bother with it)
  • Shotel's throw attack (missing until I can figure out how to replace projectiles in special attacks)
  • Jewel Sword money drop (I made it grant LCK instead, cause, even though it's possible to implement, I'm not gonna bother)
  • Heaven+Rune Sword special attacks (can't recreate their special attacks, way too complex)
  • Thunderbrand's special attack (won't do it, but I changed it so it uses the Stellar Sword special now, cause "moving at lightning speed" fits)
  • Alucard Spear was removed until I can find a spritesheet for the Saturn SOTN version of it
  • Moon Rod's Crescent Moon special (won't do it, too complex, but I changed it to the ice projectile special)
  • Shield Rod+Mablung Sword (no interaction with shields right now, cause I haven't thought of a good way to add a shield), so they're just bad
  • Blue Knuckles' blue light attack (won't do it, not worth it, it's just a basic punching weapon now)
  • Fist of Tulkas' special attack (it uses the ice projectile until I can figure out how to replace projectiles in special attacks)
-Bat Vial still has the Summon Crow attack sound (couldn't find the damn thing in the code)
-Visuals for stuff that have an equivalent in PoR aren't changed (I'll do it in the future): the bible subweapon still looks like Jonathan's bible, for example.
-Info screen portrait is still Jonathan (this is shockingly hard to change)
-No weapon/skill descriptions/icons were altered, cause that's too much work and that time is better spent making actual gameplay stuff
-CPU Alucard thinks he has more range than he actually does with regular swords (cause he thinks he's using a whip)
-Due to how the ATK+STR formula works, at low STR levels some weapons will produce the same ATK value despite actually having different ATK bonuses (eg Alucard Sword is set to have 1 ATK and Short Sword 2, but both give you no ATK at LV1)
-No dialogue was changed
-Hell Fire has the same bug that the Crossbow skill has in the base game: if you use it facing left, the projectile goes faster

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (short):
-Apply the XDelta patches provided to dra02.dll (in the main game folder) and alldata.bin (in the windata folder). Use a patcher that allows you to ignore checksum validation (eg DeltaPatcher, that you can download from romhacking.net or github), if you've already modified these files with other mods (though using other mods with this one is NOT recommended).
-KEEP A BACKUP of those two files, if you want to play the other modes (Sisters, Richter, Axe Armor), cause the mod messes with them.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (detailed):
-CREATE A BACKUP of dra02.dll and alldata.bin if you want to play the other modes (Sisters, Richter, Axe Armor), cause the mod messes with them.
-Get an XDelta patcher. I suggest DeltaPatcher (which you can get from romhacking.net or github), since it has an option to ignore checksum (so you can apply this mod on top of other mods that affect the same files, though using other mods with this one is NOT recommended).
-Unzip the .rar file to whatever folder you want.
-Use your XDelta patcher to apply the .xdelta patches provided to dra02.dll (in the main game folder) and alldata.bin (in the windata folder). If they've been modified by other mods already (again, NOT recommended, cause this mod messes with a lot), then make sure to deselect the "checksum validation" option in your patcher program.

Finally, this mod took MONTHS of work to create, so, if you want to show your appreciation for that and you have the means, you can send me something on paypal at [email protected] .

If you do, I very much appreciate it! If you don't, enjoy the mod anyway!
