Just played that part too. That is not a pre-rendered cutscene, as it doesn't appear in the 15 I found in the game files, therefore it is not modded. As someone else stated it's supposed to be 4:3!
The nightmare which was mistakenly bundled in the wrong format was the one where Maelle screams with the 33 in the background!
4:3 is intentional artistic choice paired with black and white in that particular scene as it suppose to have a feeling of old vintage movie... and there is a metaphor in that if you know the story. not everything is a technical mistake that needs to be fixed :)
The quality is still much better than the original on 4k. I have reports that say it doesn't work on the game pass version, but also reports that it does work. I'd say try out for yourself and check the very first cutscene by making a new save, if you want you can also report back :)
thank you this is exactly what I was looking for for NG+ I don't know why their pre-rendered cutscenes are such bad quality, sometimes it's hard to see details in them. it's one thing that should be easy to put out in best quality possible since it's just a video. hopefully they tweak it one day in some update but for now your mod helps :)
I cant endorse since I download on mirror links not nexus (it would take forever) but consider this comment by kudos :)
Are all the pre-rendered cutscenes 1920×1088, even when you're playing in 4K? I'm playing at 4K too, but the cutscenes looked kinda... you know. So, what I’m trying to ask is: is this mod intended for all players?
I still have the 4K files on my pc, I'm actively trying to make the 4k version available, however this happens: When the 4k video is loaded, it's just zoomed in in the center, essentially showing 1920x1088 at the center of it.
So to prevent that, and still have something to play with, I made this downsampled version with higher bitrate overall, since it's still better than the standard one. I decided to publish it, mostly because while playing in 1440p, I found this version to be more clear than the standard, even tho it's not at the level I'd want it to be
I understand that it might not be for ALL players, however even in 4k it still offers somewhat crisper details, surely less banding and artifacts, and with the 60fps version, enhanced smoothness. Rest assured that, when I found the way to edit the scaling mode of the video player, or a workaround, I will provide a 4K version, which surely will result in a much greater experience for players who are playing in 4K, like you.
I really appreciate your thoughtful and detailed response. It means a lot!
I get that the current mod might not be exactly what you want, but it still gives a better experience than the base game, right? (English noob, sorry...)
It does! In the description you can find some links to imgsli albums which compare different frames of the initial cutscenes, to have an early look. I suggest The Departure and The End of Expedition 33, with this one specifically being extremely low quality because of the dark.
Yes, specifically it's how they decided to handle video files, and this is my first time doing something like this.
As of now, I actually managed to make a 4k video show up correctly, however I suspect that what I did is just downsample it at runtime, instead of retaining its detail on resolutions that would benefit from it (So essentially 15gb of 4k video that appear the same as the 6gb 1080p version I already published)
I'm not actively trying to work this out because of university, so I can't guarantee it'll be ready for your NG+ run. Comically, I still need to finish the game! :')
I haven't done testing on this regard, but I don't see how they'd leave the video hanging in the VRAM after playing it. I haven't seen performance dips after making the mod, and there are no reports for crashing, so it should be safe!

Edit: Or even just providing files for the upscaled 4k version without downscaling back. Would love to see these cinematics as good as possible.
Still got a 4:3 nightmare cutscene (the 3rd one? It has masked lady talking)

Hope this clears some doubts :)

Just wanna confirm if it is something that can't be fixed in the foreseeable future before starting NG+

I would upload to another provider, but it really takes too much time with my wifi
