In the player.log, I see the irritatingly obtuse error:

[Error] [Background Question And History Fixes 1.7] <b>Compilation Error </b>: Index was outside the bounds of the array.
        at line#0 column#0

I wish the log gave me more information that I could then give you. From what I've seen, that implies the mod isn't going to work as the script wasn't compiled. I'm running the latest stable DFU, if that helps at all. Happy to help with debugging attempts.

Am I correct in thinking that by the latest stable version of DFU, you mean v1.1.1? Also, have you tried creating a new character, and if so, were you able to and did the mod work correctly? These types of errors are relatively common and don't always mean something isn't working, but obviously I'd like to check if that is so.

Move the mod down in your load order. It might take a few tries but it fixes it for me, not this mod mind you, this issue can happen to any mod, in heavily modded setup.

ModManager - started loading mod: UBLaMF - Map Blocks addon
ModManager - started loading mod: Archaeologists
[Error] [Archaeologists 2.6.1] <b>Compilation Error </b>: Index was outside the bounds of the array.
          at line#0 column#0

ModManager - started loading mod: No Guild Loot Piles
ModManager - started loading mod: RMB Resource Pack
ModManager - started loading mod: daggerfall expanded textures
ModManager - started loading mod: Transparent Windows

When I create wood elf, get thru picking my skills.
    Primary: Archery, animal taming, medical.
Secondary: Long blade, stealth, sylvan tongue.
Minor: climbing, dodging, running, jumping, mercantile and lockpicking
When I click to answer the background questions it takes me back to the race selection map and rinse repeat.
I have the biogs for language skills overhaul and I have the dfmod installed on the latest version of DFU.

Just tested the same build and it all went fine for me... so not sure what's going on there. It may be a load order issue. Do you have Language Skills Overhaul loading after (i.e. is below) Background Question And History Fixes?

If yes, are you using any of my other class mods? If yes, the load order should be as follows:

      Background Question And History Fixes
      Classes Redone
      Classes Expanded
      Language Skills Overhaul

If you already have them like this, or if you change it and it still doesn't work, let me know and I'll see what else I can figure out.

I fixed it. I misunderstood the install instructions and thought the main biog folder you were talking about was arena2.
So I pasted the language overhaul files into there.
Once I undid that and pasted the language overhaul files into your main biog changes, all is well.
      Thanks mate.

also added some soft integration for Macadaynu's Language Skills Overhaul - 1) unfortunately it looks very bad with Classic font (text is very long and goes out of slots), 2) is it possible to toggle on/off this integration only in case if you chose the option to modify language skills? 3) Could you please make two versions of this mod: the first one which works like a fix for those questions that that had no effect before, and another which also adds brand new answers/decisions?

I'll be willing to do two versions where one is for use with the Language Skills Overhaul mod and the other isn't. That will solve the classic font text going out of bounds (and will just look better with whatever font). I'm not going to do further versions on top of them though, one with just fixes and the other with fixes and changes. The changes really only ended up being pretty minor ones for balance, and I'm not keen on doing two alternate versions for those with the Language Skills Overhaul mod and two versions for those without.

In the new version (1.8), I've removed the references to the Language Skills Overhaul mod from the standard BIOGs and instead provided an alternate set of BIOGs for use with that mod that changes the text in the relevant answers to match the new skills. DFmod is the same as v1.7.

Hey, I just tested the 1.4 version and it doesn't work for me. When I choose to Auto generate answers to questions, nothing happens and asks me to select a race again. If I choose to answer the questions, it gives me an eternal black screen. I tested with an Dark Elf Sorcerer. Restoring the 1.3 txt files made it work again.

Also on the 1.3 version there was a typo in the sorcerer(maybe mages too?) where if I selected knowledge on reason to adventure resulted in 2 dots at the end of the sentence: "You marvelled at the knowledge Tharn must have accrued.."

Another thing. Unless your dmod file changes somehing in the code I'm not aware, isn't it a bad idea to remove options that the base class can't use since the custom classes also get these same questions and may not have the same restrictions? Example: I like to play a custom sorcerer that can use plate armor, so I don't put the restriction on my character.

Yes, there seems to be something wrong with the BIOG files ... not sure what. They're just text files and at a quick glance look like they should be okay. I'll try and figure it out and replace them asap. I'll correct the double full-stop as well. Stay tuned ... and stick with v1.3 for now.

Okay ... I've fixed the BIOG files (I'd deleted empty lines from the end of each text file, but apparently they are needed for them to work). Use v1.5, this also should correct the double full-stop from appearing.

I had kept the armor components in the sorcerer's questions and answers already. I had given the sorcerer plate armor in my Classes Redone mod, and this mod is very much meant as a companion piece to that one.

RE any problems arising from Custom Classes not getting access to stuff they are not forbidden from using... well, it should only be a relatively minor inconvenience - they'll be getting all the kit they need within a short time of playing the game anyway and the answers have plenty of options to pick and choose from.

If you really don't like these latest changes you can use the BIOGs from v1.3 (no messing with forbidden items) and the dfmod from v1.5 (which corrects the various text errors).

It worked. I especially like the Elven Flail for Mages. It was an edit I made myself before, since you can't get the Sorcerer bio for custom classes.

      Keep up the good work.

I think I worked out why you keep getting the mage background instead of the sorcerer one. The two default classes have the same primary and major skills and when the custom class looks for a similar default class it always comes to the mage first and picks it.

I've differentiated the two classes in my Classes Redone mod, if you use that and make your custom class using the same primary and major classes, or close to them, you may now get the sorcerer BIOG and History. It might be worth a try at least.

      Interesting, I'll check it out.

Mages and Sorcerers also have the same minor skills. Their differences being the Advantages/Disadvantages and Attributes point allocation.

The Sorcerer bio states that they differ from regular mages because they can't regenerate mana by themselves and must rely on absorbing others spells. That's why I believe that, even on vanilla, you should be able to get the sorcerer bio as long as your mage class has Spell Absorption and Inability to Regen Spell Points as advantage/disadvantage. Probably an oversight.

On another note, I noticed you removed the Warrior, Assassin and Knight as options for mages on the question: "You are intimate friends with a very generous ___." From a role-playing point of view, I see no reason as to why a mage couldn't be friends with someone that fits those classes.

Maybe on a future update, you could change the reward for those answers to something usable by the class instead of just removing it?

I removed them for the forbidden items given, rather than that they wouldn't be friends... but I take your point. Maybe I will add alternative "gifts" that aren't forbidden for some of them if/when I do another update or have time to look into it.
  5. Wonder if I can get a little help here?
Just installed 'Background question and history fixes' mod in Daggerfalls Unity (GOG).  I have the latest GOG version 13.5., of Daggerfalls.  But when I look at this mod in the mod list, it shows that I need Daggerfalls 14.5?

What am I doing wrong here?  It said in bright red letters..."DFUnity Version: 0.14.5", instead of the Daggerfalls 13.5 version that I have, when I select this mod.

    Thanks.

This mod was built for the latest version of DaggerfallUnity. Either upgrade to version 0.14.5, available HERE ... or just use it without the dfmod enabled. The changes/fixes to the background questions made in the BIOGs files will still show and be usable in game, you just won't get the corrections and fixes in the History texts that the dfmod makes.
    2. Just wanted to say thanks!  I just assumed that the 'latest' one I found on/from GOG was the most up to date.  I have downloaded it, and I am setting up the 'newest' one from your link.  So far everything is good...

      Again, thanks!

Okay ... I think I've found the problem here. Answering "sanctimonious priests" in the "of all disagreeable types" question decreases your rep with generic temple NPCs due to a new consequence I added. Unlike with the rest of the answers, this one was not used in any other question/answer combo that the BIOGs had. It seems you can only change the rep for Commoner, Noble, Scholar, Merchant and Underworld NPCs ... they, and only they, appear in the little rep change chart at the end of the Background Questions during Character Creation. I will have to remove that answer and consequence (unless I can think of another consequence that doesn't involve rep) from the "disagreeable types" Question. This will be in the next update, 1.3, coming soon.

Hey, great mod, thank for your work. It's very useful to be able to start with an Elven Staff as a mage.

But I've been having a slight problem with this mod. While the questions themselves work, the corrections you made of the typos don't, such as the sorcerer one: #4119, typo corrected in Sorcerer History ("complimented" changed to "complemented").

These typos still appear on my character backstory when I check it. I've already overwritten the BIOGs files and the TEXT.RSC file in the arena2 folder. Do I need to do anything else? I'm playing on version 14.5.

Did you put the TEXT.RSC file in the original vanilla Daggerfall/arena2 folder? I know there's an arena2 folder in DaggerfallUnity too - it won't do anything in there.

My original arena2, which I downloaded separately from the DFU, is placed inside the StreamingAssets/GameFiles. I replaced the TEXT.RSC file from there. I didn't even know there was another arena2 folder.

That's weird. In that instance it should work.
In my setup I have the original game in an entirely separate folder (Bathesda Softworks/Daggerfall/arena2), but if you have it installed in the StreamingAssets/GameFiles folder, then that should work too.
Did the new TEXT.RSC file that came with this mod definitely over-write the original?
I'm a bit stumped as to why it doesn't work . This is with a new game? Not a saved one?

Yes, I even double checked and overwritten the file TEXT.RSC again. I created a new game and made a Dark Elf sorcerer. When I start the game and check my bio, it still says 'complimented' instead of complemented. It's really weird that the new questions and rewards work, but the fixed typos don't.

The fact that the Questions and Answers side work, mean that the new BIOGs files are working fine. It's just the TEXT.RSC file that isn't for some reason. Let me go check some things and see if I can replicate the problem.

Okay ... the TEXT.RSC edits aren't working ... they are showing in the editor, but not in the game, which is annoying. They seemed to work when I did a quick test of the initial release, but now even that version's TEXT.RSC isn't working. Not sure what's going on, but I'll try and sort it and do an update soon.

Thanks for the quick replies, waiting for the update.

By the way, since you are messing with the files of the game, do you know if it's possible to get the Sorcerer backstory for a custom class? Even if I recreate the class perfectly on custom, it always gives you the mage background.

It's supposed to select the closest default class, in terms of skills, to your custom class. Don't really know what can be done to change it's selection though. Sorry.

No problem, it was probably not programed properly since mage and sorcerer classes are similar, and will require a mod or DFU update to fix. For now at least, I can just create an sorcerer, copy the bio.txt from the save folder and paste on my custom class as a workaround.

That was quick. The new version works, thank a lot.

By the way, I noticed that in the sorcerer Bio, right after your fix of the word complimented, it refers to your parents as 'sorcerors' instead of 'sorcerers'.

"Your parents complemented one another, both as sorcerors as well as educators."

I don't know if that's the correct plural of sorcerer, but if it isn't you might want to add that to typos to fix in future updates.
