Dark Souls Remastered replaced the special effects of the original release (PS3, X360 and PC's Prepare to Die Edition). Since PtDE is unavailable to purchase, this mod is the only way to play Dark Souls on PC with the original effects if you don't already own a copy of PtDE.
To install, simply copy and replace the content of the RAR into steamapps\common\DARK SOULS REMASTERED\sfx. (no .exe of any sort) If you're only interested into changing the bonfire SFX, only copy FRPG_SfxBnd_CommonEffects.ffxbnd.dcx. If you want to uninstall, verify integrity of the game files with Steam, make a copy of the original sfx folder or use the DSR sfx file present in the mod's files tab.
Few effects are bugged like the dragon head stone breath which is white or the undead dragon's toxic breath which is invisible. Some effects are too brigh, the arrow texture is missing and there is a "shine" sprite that was not in the original. Does not impact the game in any way besides changing the visual effects.
I did not make this mod all credits to @1dropoff. I upload it here because I feel many people were disappointed with the change of art style of the remaster, yet the mod is hard to find if you don't specifically search for it, plus I wish someone could fix it.
[Feb 2024]: Check Yozu's "Some PtDE Common Effects". It does not feature every PtDE effects at the moments but the ones implemented in his mod are fixed ! o7 Yozu
