About this mod

A modified version of the Better Bonfires mod, reverting some things to be more vanilla-esque such as making you still need the Lordvessel to warp, while keeping QoL features such as being able to warp to ANY bonfire you've lit.

I adore the mod "Better Bonfires" by Dziggy, it's great, and expertly made. Primarily, it adds the ability to warp to any bonfire you've rested at, as well as allowing you to wait to start New Game+ like future games do.

However, Better Bonfires changes things a bit too much for my personal taste. My qualms are as follows:

  • Most notably, Better Bonfires drops the Lordvessel requirement for warping- changing the structure and design of the game. The parts prior to the obtaining of the Lordvessel were designed explicitly with the intention of you walking around them and finding shortcuts, fully appreciating their level design. Being able to warp so early goes against this.
    ‎
  • Better Bonfires also made Firekeepers far more insignificant. With it, you can both reinforce estus flasks at any bonfire, negating the need to talk to a Firekeeper to do so, as well as being able to relight a Firekeeper's bonfire after their death, when you couldn't originally. Both of these serve to lessen the consequences of a player's actions in regards to the Fire Keepers. Along with this, the impact of the Firelink Shrine's Firekeeper in the story is severely lost, given the lack of gameplay change to the player.

The personal issues I have listed above, in combination with the original mod's open permissions, led me to create this mod:

(Slightly) Better Bonfires is a trimmed down version of the Dziggy's original Better Bonfires mod to adhere to my personal tastes in making it lean more into the QoL aspect, rather than the large game changing aspects it originally had. Below, I'll list both the features removed and those kept.

Features cut from the original mod:

  • Warp option being unlocked upon leaving the Asylum. Now once again, the Lordvessel is required to warp.
  • Option to reinforce Estus Flask at bonfire menu. Like in vanilla, you now need to go to a Fire Keeper to reinforce your flask.
  • Re-Lighting the bonfire of a dead Fire Keeper. Once they're gone, their fire is too.

Features retained from the original mod:

  • Ability to warp to any bonfire after you've lit it (and obtained the Lordvessel), rather than just certain bonfires as in vanilla.
  • New Game+ being triggered at a bonfire after beating the final boss.
  • New bonfire after Undead Parish boss area, allowing fast access to Oswald once you can warp. (As well as giving you a rest after a battle well fought.)
  • Bonfires being grouped into location-based categories on the warp menu, as in Dark Souls 3.
  • Certain bonfires you could already warp to being given more descriptive names.
  • No longer needing to rest at a bonfire you've warped to in order to set your respawn point, as that's now done on warp.
  • Decluttered Bonfire Menu (details on that from original page written below)
    Decluttered Bonfire Menu:
      • The option to kindle a bonfire will no longer appear if it is at its max kindle stage.
      • The option to reverse hollowing will no longer appear if the player is already human.
      • The option to reinforce the estus flask will only appear if the player has a fire keeper's soul.
      • Grouped the options to reinforce weapon, reinforce armor, and repair equipment into a sub-menu together.
      • Removed the useless 'Leave' option from the bonfire menu.

Installation:

Extract the contents of the Slightly Better Bonfires folder within the zip to the game's main folder, where the exe is found, and replace the original files when prompted. It is recommended to backup the files that will be overwritten.

Thanks again to Dziggy for making the permissions on Better Bonfires open. If, however, he changes his mind on that, he need only send me a message and I'll take it down.

If there's any bugs, please let me know and I'll see what I can do!
