    Update
My previous approach to this mod was flawed, so I’ll be redoing the entire thing when I have time.
In the meantime, I’ve hidden all optional and old files, as they were causing more confusion than they were worth. If you still want them, you can get them on my Discord.
The current main file only includes changes to foliage, which are the most crucial ones in my opinion.

    Installation
There’s been a lot of confusion about how to install this mod, so here’s a step-by-step guide:

    • Download the latest release of Mod Engine 2.
    • Extract it anywhere on your PC.
    • Move the asset, chr, and/or parts folders from my mod into the Mod Engine/mod folder.
    • You’ll know it’s set up correctly when your mod folder looks something like this.
    • Launch the game by running the launchmod_eldenring.bat in your Mod Engine folder.

    Compatibility
This mod is fully compatible with every other mod, as long as you either overwrite my files or load my mod first.

Thank you all for using / endorsing the mod, I really appreciate it.
☕ If you want to buy me some coffee, you can do so here.
💬 If you have any questions or need help, contact me on Discord. I don’t get notifications for posts on the mod page and rarely check it.
    That’s all.

Just wanna say that I play Elden Ring in VR, and use Luke Ross' RealVR mod for Elden Ring.  He's been able to code out the TAA shimmer so that it is very minimal and so playable now.  Of course you need an RTX 4080 or higher, and you need to run it on 3088x3088 in-game resolution or higher.
    >In that default configuration, not changing any textures, using only the game textures provided by default, in scenes with distance, like when you first exit the Hero's Grave into Limgrave, not look so good.
Add in "Texture Improvement" by Bardowastaken, and the scene looks 50% better.  I've read that in 2D flat the difference between stock textures and "Texture Improvement" is imperceptible, but it definitely makes a difference in VR.  Looking forward to what you have in the pipeline Bardo, you godsend you.
Photo links: I use Elden Ring Reforged (ERR) first, because it has a very easy setup for loading other mods, and it works with Luke Ross' RealVR  mod.  Actually, ERR uses Modengine2, it is built in.  But if you don't want to use ERR, just try setting it up anyway and follow the instructions, and it will help you understand how to setup without ERR later.

    With ERR:
Run Elden Ring first without any mods.  Record VRAM usage.

Create a folder such as C:\ERR.  It must be at C: (thus C:\ERR), or, put it on another SSD, if not M.2 drive.  dl ERR, extract.  It contains a subfolder like "ERRv1.3.2A".  1.jpg

    Open it, and Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C.  (= copyAll).  In C:\ERR, Ctrl+V (= paste).  1b.jpb

ERR will load any compatible mod from "addons".  As described in the ERR docs, you need a subfolder in addons for each mod you want to load, and under that goes the compiled code (aka the mod files).  So, for "Texture Improvement" mod, first, you would create a subfolder in "addons", named whatever (without spaces).  For example, I will put Bardo's textures into a "C:\ERR\addons\BardosTextures" folder.  2.jpg

atm, only the "Flora" textures are available for dl (unless you to go the Roundhouse Discord where you can get ALL the textures, which is what I've done which I show later).  dl the "Flora" texture pack.  Extract it.  In there, see "asset".  This is the "mod files" actually used by the game.  Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, then browse to "C:\ERR\addons\BardosTextures", and Ctrl+V, so that your folder now looks like 3.jpg , 3a.jpg , 3b.jpg (which show the subfolder>subfolder>subfolder drill down)  The other texture packs are the same.  The "mod files" start in the ones that look like "asset", "chr", "parts", or "menu".

So now, you could go to the Roundhouse discord, and dl all the texture packs.  Following my instructions, you get 4.jpg  That shows all of the texture packs combined.

Launch Elden Ring using "C:\ERR\!! Launch ELDEN RING Reforged.BAT", if it finds mods in "addons" it runs "Gideon" to does stuff to make textures work in Elden Ring.  The game launches.  After the title screen where it says "Press any key" you will see in the lower right corner, "Elden Ring Reforged ..."

    >>>Now, recheck your VRAM usage.  It should be significantly larger than without the mods.  This is how you know whether or not the textures are being loaded by the mod loader.

Here is a final screenshot of my folder layout 5.jpg .  Its a little different, bc I chose NOT TO USE ONE FOLDER, AND INSTEAD I dl'd all of the Texture packs, extracted them one at a time, renamed the folders to remove the dashes and numbers, added a number in the front to set load order.  "Minimal Hud" loads last, and overwrites any other mod before it.  You can see I didn't use all of Bardo's textures, just the ones I wanted to.

Final note about using modengine2 instead of ERR:  it's the same, except that in modengine2, the "mod" folder = our "BardosTextures".  The "asset", "chr", "parts" would go into the "\mod" folder.  In modengine2 you use the .toml file to specify mod folders to load.  The ERR devs have simply written their code to load anything that is in a subfolder in the addons folder, so you don't have to meddle with .toml files.

After that I add RealVR, which doesn't touch the ERR folder.  I still launch using "C:\ERR\!! Launch ELDEN RING Reforged.BAT", it automatically loads RealVR.

Works with convergence, reforged, reborn etc.
Installed the Flora package and gpu VRAM increased by ~1 GB.

Because there hardly is any/only little difference/improvement, even at 4K-UHD and max. graphic settings.
      Recommendation:
      1) Just install Reshade and use bundled AMD's FX.CAS (Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS)). Somewhat close in result, with the benefit saving gpu VRAM and file download/space.
      2) Even better and only costs 5 bucks: Martysmods's iMMERSE Pro: Clarity + iMMERSE: Sharpen. Looks overall better than what bardowastaken provides here.
Additionally iMMERSE: MXAO + iMMERSE: SMAA.
      https://guides.martysmods.com/docs/shader-repositories/immerse-pro/immerse-pro-clarity/

See my post below about " three types of texture improvements with varying effects & costs: 1) Simply upscaled 2) Machine learning based 3) Hand-made/created".
Very likely it's type 1) (or type 1 in outcome).
So imo not worth it that way, just bloats gpu VRAM usage, as mentioned. "No downplaying the effort, it's simply a (harsh) fact. Hardly possible for 1 person to achieve type 2) &/ 3)"
Always check example image comparisons first to decide if it's worth or texture bloat.
      :)

I'm not gonna lie, I can barely see any differences. Some textures are less blurry, but I have to zoom in to notice (for example Silver Mirrorshield). I downloaded texture packs for other games and the difference was day and night, but this one doesn't seem to do as much as I expected.
Not to blame the creator or anything, I bet he put a lot of work into this project, but at least for me it doesn't seem to be worth it, the default textures are already high quality. The recommended Eden VOLITION reshade that was used for the screenshoots seem to do the hard lifting and I think that's enough for most users if you don't want to bother downloading 100GB for the 4K version.

I honestly don't even think this mod works as intended anymore. When I used it before the DLC, the difference was night and day. It took the game to whole different level on a 4K Oled. Now I don't get that same feeling, so I just uninstalled it and have been waiting for an update. Still no update so I guess I'm SOL.

There are basically three types of texture improvements with varying effects & costs:

      1) Simple upscaled versions of the textures. Example waifu2x, some stable diffusion, GAN etc. pp.
These upscaled textures look the worst, in other words, have the least amount of impact and improvement (barely noticeable). Even worse, they usually also come at a higher increase in gpu VRAM. Plus: take the least amount of time to accomplish.
If I had to guess, bardowastaken's texture modification here is that kind of texture improvement, that's why there is hardly any visually noticeable improvement even at 4K-UHD (maximum texture graphic setting), despite the huge 100 GB file size; I tried the 100 GB 4K version before myself.
I assume he realized that himself and thus took them down. Then he realized that even doing type 2) modification requires x-times more effort (time, processing ressources etc.) and type 3) a gargantum amount more. Overhauling the whole game with type 2) & 3)? Understandable if he quits it :)
Not trying to downplay the effort, it's simply a (harsh) fact. Hardly possible for 1 person.
Imo, these types are usually not worth for modern > 2020 games which aim at 4K-UHD resolution natively and come with native 4K textures.

Example: Nearly all XilaMonstrr's texture modification are that type. They fill more than > 24 GB gpu VRAM easily, but hardly any improvement unless zoomed in 300 %.
      https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/14999
      https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/10331

      2) Machine learning (media bullshiet buzzword "AI") based texture reconstruction/upscalers. Require noticeable more effort, time, knowledge and ressource (processing, time) to accomplish. If done right, these new textures will already look really good. GPU vram increase is even bigger, but absolutely worth the tradeoff this time.

      3) Hand-made/created new textures/assets. Logically, the best overall regarding impact, improvement, quality etc. but also take the most amount of effort, time, ressources.
HalkHogan's "HD Reworked Project" for Skyrim, The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 are normally always type 3).
HalkHogan maybe got a team of modders helping out, and gets paid a lot (got payed by CD Projekt to be implemented in The Witcher 3 next gen), thus working 24/7.

So logically, if one had to chose, always chose type 3), the best, and let type 3) overwrite ther others.
      3) overwrites > 2) overwrites > 1)

Is nobody else getting stutters during gameplay after installing this mod? Got a fairly beefy setup with a 4090 so VRAM shouldn't be an issue. Uninstalling mod and stutters are gone.

EDIT: Installing the main file is practically stutter free. Optional files, Flora in particular and stutters occur, assuming when textures load. Running game at 4K res.

No stutter with main+flora with SpecialK and fps unlocked (SpecialK frame limiter set a bit below my max fps, so it is stable, iirc 90)

Though I use dlss mod (perf) with DSR 4x (to do 1080p->4K->1080p)

got this issue after formatting and new bios.

Re-enabled above 4g decoding and it went away, if you have rebar turn it on set custom size and/or disable it. HAGS may also play a part.

using intel x99 if your on AMD probably to slow latency wise to load the textures.

you also dont even need modengine. you could just unpack the game and replace the original game files with the upscaled files by dragging and dropping them. then just boot up the game like normal and it will work because you just replaced all the original files..

are you using cracked version ? its complicated to get Modengine2 to work. I had to copy convergence launcher into (launchmod_eldenring.bat) and modify some lines. Main problem is it cant find path to game folder.

False.  For said version, everything needs to go into the SteamApps/Common directly to make mods work.

For example, my main directly for my version is:

      C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ELDEN RING\Game

All mods need to go in:

      C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ELDEN RING\Game\ModEngine-2.1.0.0-win64

To get the game path, just install Convergence and use the usual launchmod_eldenring.bat from your desktop shortcut that should look like this:

      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ELDEN RING\Game\ModEngine-2.1.0.0-win64\launchmod_eldenring.bat"

Once Convergence is installed, you only need to play the game through said "bat" file.

Simple question, which may have been answered already.  Is this mod compatible with Convergence?  As in, is that mod better in quality than this mod, or can I use this mod to improve the Convergence graphics, all in all?  Was this mod merged with Convergence, or can I simply use this mod to make Convergence better looking?

Compatible with Convergence, Reforged, Reborn etc. Some modders also provide Convergence/ERR/Reborn compatible modifications.
For example, see installation instructions (readme) for Reforged, were normal addon modifications have to be placed in an "addons" folder and reforged will load them automatically.

For Example No Compass modification "<...>\addons\No Compass - ERR\menu\01_000_fe.gfx
For every new modification, create a new folder; for this Texture Improvement modification it looks like this (example):
"<...>\addons\Texture Improvement Environment Flora\asset\aet\..." The various folders "aet-xxx" will be inside the "aet" folder.

Injection aka .dll modifications are placed in another "dll\active" folder along with their respective ini/settings files. Example:
      "<...>\dll\active\UnlockTheFps.dll"
      "<...>\dll\active\UnlockTheFps.ini"

TechieW's Elden Mod Loader isn't even needed installed manually; TechieW's .ddl modifications just run fine by placing them inside the "dll\active" folder. Reforged will load them automatically since it comes with it's own bundled ModEngine2.

Yeah, and to clarify, there's the sticked post by the modder bardowastaken. Life can be a b&@*$ and we have to be patient.
