Note about the "Next Gen" Update
FROST only works properly with the downgraded version of Fallout 4, for the following reasons:
Many mod authors who made F4SE mods decided to only provide support for the downgraded versions
The Next Gen version of Fallout 4 has severe bugs, including FPS issues if mods are used that edit many NPCs.
The downgraded version has the best compatibility with many essential mods
Many mod authors cannot upgrade their F4SE mods properly due to engine-level changes
You can buy F4 on Steam and GOG, this way you can have it installed two times.
You can also use the profile or instance feature of your mod manager to set up two independent mod setups, one for FROST and one for another Fallout 4 setup. Requirement for that is that both setups need to work with downgraded versions of F4.
Ah, I only have the gog version, can't really afford to buy 2 different versions, but I thought that gog F4 doesn't need downgrading. Thanks for the quick reply btw :)
A bit late to the party, but you could probably use GOG's offline installers to install a second copy in another location. Or if you're willing to rebuilt part of your mod list, you could use Root Builder to keep the original installation almost completely clean.
This may seem like a counteractive suggestion to the Frost mod, but could it be possible to make an addition to Frost where you side with the US Army Remnants or even have an option to start as a US Army Remnant soldier and have radiant quests where you try help the people of the commonwealth such as delivering food and supplies to certain survivor compounds which would in turn ally with you and not shoot you on site? Just to give the faction more life as more than just an enemy. Or even start off as a Metro Alliance soldier who is helping in the fight against the Metro Federation. I would love there to be actual quest lines for these factions. I would love to see more interaction in terms of voice dialogue of these other factions. Maybe some romance with secret npcs in there. Frost is a cold world but we need some warmth to make it through those insufferable days. Someone made a Frost mod which you can side with different factions which is why I made this suggestion. Of course there is no dialogue with the other factions but It did pique my interest. Maybe this is not what you intended for the mod. Most likely you wanted it to be a hostile environment. Well it's just something to have in the back of your mind. Thank you for taking the time to read this long post.
Yes, but we won't do that. Feel free to make such a mod yourself though if you want!
The focus of FROST was always to be a freeform survival mod, with additional storytelling and worldbuilding through notes/journals and visual elements that you have to piece together. The focus was never on voice-acted NPCs, quests, etc.
FROST Plus adds a few quests and voiced NPCs, but doing stuff like that is very time consuming, and we stopped working on adding new features to FROST (we only do bugfixes now).
Appreciate the reply and endorsement to make such a mod. Unfortunately I'm only starting to become more invested in making mods so that would be something I would make on a whim once I understand modding a bit more. Maybe I'll play around with f04 edit and drag certain voice lines over to Frost for those characters.
Due to lore, technical, immersion and balancing reasons, adding the companions of those mods will cause issues. FROST is set 200 years before the vanilla game, and Wastelander Barb and Heather have both been designed with the vanilla time setting in mind.
Additionally, both have scripts and quests that require vanilla content to be present that has been deactivated or removed in FROST.
So no, you can't add them without encountering issues.
I wish there was a fix to the despawning enemies and mines after the Player died because its so annoying to constantly restart the game everytime I die :/
This is an engine bug which is most likely caused by a memory management issue of the engine. This bug is more common if you use certain mods, like FROST.
We can't do anything about it, because fixing engine level bugs is outside the scope of FROST, and outside of my skillset. Apparently some Russian programmers looked into this years ago, but you barely find any information about this issue anywhere, and not solutions for this problem exists.
There are two things that you can do:
Make a save file after entering a location/cell (especially interior locations)
Restart your game, this clears the active memory of the game
We call this bug "deathloop protection", because we originally thought that this was an intentional feature of the engine to avoid the player making a save file right before dying, and then not being able to use the save file anymore because they would die right away when loading it.
Q: Will there be a non-DLC version of FROST? A: No, there will not be such a version. All mayor DLCs except Creation Club content and the High-Res DLC are required.
That is from the FAQ section, please read it if you have further questions :D
F4 GOTY costs 10 dollars/euros on Steam every few months (when its on sale). Usually every 6-8 weeks. It doesn't get cheaper than that.
Okay, one thing to note, don't take too long making a character lmao, I spent too long to the point I heard a warning in a radio, something blew up and my character just disappeared, thankfully I can still proceed no problem, though my bathroom was filled with water I think I had to swim out of there, was pretty funny.
As mentioned in the Below Zero guide's section about Starting a New Game, you can and should edit your character later on in the room with the starting locations.
Would there be a way to make a version that only has the world edits, and maybe the quests? This seems really cool but all my mods are for next-gen and I know this can't be ported. :(
Yes, but it doesn't make sense to make such a version, from a technical and a design perspective. It would be way to much work for us to offer butchered versions of FROST for a small target player base. FROST also doesn't get most of its charm just from the worldspace changes and the quests, it gets it from all of its parts.
F4 is on GOG on sale sometimes, and you might be able to grab the F4 GOTY on it for 10 bucks. That way you can install F4 two time, one downgraded and one next-gen version.
Yes, there is a way, but like I said it does not make sense to do that because it would require a giant amount of work. Additionally, you would have to edit multiple esp files that depend on each other, and things could easily break left and right. It is not worth the effort.
Keep in mind that if you are not allowed to publish and upload any modified versions of FROST. So even if you decide to put in all the insane amount of work, you would be the only person to be able to play this modified version of FROST.
I won't answer further questions about this topic, because it is simple not a feasible thing to do.
You should just downgrade your game after your current playthrough.
I may just be lazy but wth bro there's so much stuff i got to do/download for this to work lowkey it does not seem worth all that trouble for the average modder there's got to be a better more efficient way like any other normal mod that's a 1 download thing
here's so much stuff i got to do/download for this to work
If you are referring to the requirements and the stuff in the Below Zero guide: That stuff has nothing to do with FROST. 90% of the guide is basically only about how to set up a modern base setup for Fallout 4 and how to sort your load order correctly. If you are not using stuff like Buffout 4, not sorting your load order correctly, and are overwhelmed by having to manually extract two files, you are not doing (manual) modding right.
I got tired of people reporting "bugs" over at the bug section here that were not caused by FROST, but by people messing up their setups, using incompatible mods, reporting vanilla bugs or bugs from other mods, etc.
Since the creation of the Below Zero guide, those bug reports went down massively while download numbers stayed stable.
The only more "efficient way" would be to make a Nexus Collection or Wabbajack. Those have existed in the past for FROST, but people usually didn't maintain them or they were broken (because people ignored the BZ guide and basic F4 modding practices). Be the change you want to see in the world, sureshot5864.
The Below Zero guide is based on the most popular manual modding guide for Fallout 4 (The Midnight Ride).
Hello :D first things first, kudos for this great mod, I played FROST years ago, after so many hours on DUST, and loved it from the beginning. Now i got back to FO4 and was thinking about playing FROST again sometimes. Then I discovered I should downgrade... im not that big expert modder, and every change that i do to my game honestly makes me s#*! my pants cuz I´m always scared to f*#@ everything up and have to start again. My question is: is there a chance that FROST will get conversion for the Next-Gen version of FO4 (the last one, dont remember the numbers xD) so that i can avoid downgrading? Or are there any chances that it will work on a non downgraded version of the game? Anyways, thx again, this is one of the best mod I ever tried for FO4 :)
edit.: im stupid and as always i ddnt read the top messages xD just saw the part about the Next-Gen... still I have a tini tiny question: will FROST completely not work on a Next-Gen version? What kind of bugs would one expect in case of installation?
The Next Gen version of Fallout 4 has severe bugs, including FPS issues if mods are used that edit many NPCs. FROST edits many NPCs.
The general consensus among the modding community is that the downgraded version has the best compatibility with many essential mods
You will experience severe FPS issues and probably some broken locations. Additionally none of the FROST mods have been properly updated and patched, it is very likely that you game won't start or CTD randomly. Additionally you would need to use the CC content that comes with the NG update, which is neither patched or balanced for FROST
Before you ask: No, there are no plans to update FROST for the NG version, and no, there is no simple way to do that yourself. Do not use the NG version of F4 if you want to play FROST.
Well... that´s disappointing but I understand. Still, thx for taking the time to answer and thx again for such an amazing mod... maybe I´ll find a way to install 2 different FO4 versions in two different paths >.> one to hold on to my next-gen heavy modded saves, and the other to downgrade to play FROST and just f*#@ around with mod experiments :D Wish me luck xDDD
Keep in mind that Bethesda is to blame. Their Next-Gen update for Fallout 4 basically was a mixture of "we make a few CC mods free and force install them" and to butcher parts of the code in the engine via inline code (main reason why F4SE mods need to be completely remade for NG in a lot of cases) while also introducing bugs.
If you want to have two instances of Fallout 4: You can buy the game two times: one time for GOG and one time on Steam. This allows you to have two instances of the game. The GOG version doesn't need to be downgraded.
Keep in mind though that the simplest solution is just to use the downgraded steam version. Downgrading is explained in the Below Zero guide, and it is very simple: Extract a zip file, click on an .exe, and you are done. You don't need to be an expert modder.
The downgraded version is also compatible with almost all mods, and for the few F4SE-based mods with .dll files there are often two versions (one for NG, one for pre-NG) or often only for pre-NG. Downgrading is really really simple, don't let it scare you in any way. You will sometimes have more trouble using the NG version if you want to have a stable modded setup.
Is not that I wouldnt want to downgrade, cuz I also noticed that many mods dont work properly in this NewGen thing... but I noticed that too late and now I have my saves made with the NewGen that i dont want to lose... If it was only for the progress I wouldnt care... but all the Settlements with tons of handplaced clutter and so were a huge time investment. And the NewGen bugs... well, I honestly didnt encounter anything so far, even with 161 active plugins... so I guess I´m lucky xD In any case, I found a way to manage two instances of the game thx to the MO2 discord (they are such nice people) by having one NewGen and one OldGen bootable at the same time :D and it works, so now I´m gonna set up a modlist for FROST
