PSA for all those whose categories list got bugged after updating Mod Organizer 2 Portable Version to the latest version, here is what you need to do to restore it to normal.
Step 01). Delete the categories.dat file in your Portable Mod Organizer 2 folder. Step 02). Open Mod Organizer 2 and then open up the settings menu (The crossed screwdriver and wrench icon), then navigate to the General tab if not already on said tab. Step 03). In the General tab, navigate to the bottom of the General Tab, and then click on Configure Mod Categories, which will open the Categories Menu. Step 04). In the Categories Menu, navigate to the bottom right hand corner of the menu, and click Refresh From Nexus, followed by Import Nexus Cats, which will open the Nexus Category Import Menu. Step 05). In the Nexus Category Import Menu, insure that the Replace check box is checked under Import Strategy, while the Assign Nexus Mappings check box is checked under Options, then click ok till your back in Mod Organizer 2's main menu. Step 06). Close Mod Organizer 2, then go to where you have downloaded Mod Organizer 2.0.7 Categories for Nexus Fallout 4, then extract the categories.dat file. Step 07). Move the categories.dat file to your Portable Mod Organizer 2 Folder and replace the new categories.dat file which was added thanks to Import Nexus Cats.
Should you do all these steps correctly, your categories should be restored to the way they were before you update once you re-open Mod Organizer 2, hope this helps.
It doesnt do the organizing if you have to do all that stuff in the description LOL looks like u have to do the organizing an it just sits there looking pretty LOL now if u made it so i dont have to do anything an it just does everything by itself then it would be the organizer
Perhaps, my PC is crashed, so i didn't have MO and FO4 at the moment to test it out. Just search for file "categories.dat" on your drive and replace it. Make sure to backup the original files first.
I noticed that there is no SAVE file within MO's profile folder. If I try to make another profile, the save's seem mixed up. Is there a way to have each profile with its own saves withing the profile folders? I am not sure how MO is handling saves with Fallout 4.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer. I just want to try out some different mods, without messing up existing saves on different profiles.
DON'T USE THIS FILE if you use MO to manage other games than Fallout 4 (Skyrim for instance)
Seeing as you can't use MO to manage Fallout 4, you must use MO2, this isn't an issue. You can use MO2 to manage Skyrim, but seeing as it has less functionality, some of which isn't coming back like seeing conflicts in archives, why would you want to?
1. Why would you use this Fallout 4 file for another game? 2.Even if you used MO2 to manage Skyrim, it wouldn't make a difference as all your MO installations should be in the game folder. IE E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\ModOrganizer\categories.dat or E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\ModOrganizer\categories.dat ETC...
waduk Thank you very kindly for this updated copy of categories.dat. It saved me hours of work going back & forth to the Nexus to add all the missing categories. All I have to do now is reassign some of the mods to categories they seem more appropriate for...
jonny5tails he's probably using Regular mode, which allows you to manage multiple games with one MO installation, and uses "Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ModOrganizer" to store the configuration files, ModOrganizer.ini, etc. I'm using Portable mode so I'm not sure, but putting categories.dat in "Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ModOrganizer\Fallout 4" might work.

Tried to use NMM, but it made me want to give up modding.
Thankfully MO2 has been working well so far.
