To try and stimulate the growth of companion armor mods, and just clear up confusion in general, I have created a detailed, up to date tutorial that explains from start to finish, how I make a boot (from my boots mod). This exact process can be applied to other races as well. Click here for a PDF.
I will make a video eventually, but I'm not sure when that'll be done. I'm not saying this is the best way, the right way, or even the easiest way, but it is a way that works.
Nothing exciting on the updated files, I just updated the sorting tags downloads to only contain the ESP, rather than all of the files.
I also fixed the 'Source' folder being installed in the incorrect place. If you notice you have 'Fallout 4\data\Source\User' it is safe to remove this folder, although leaving it will also not harm your game.
Unfortunately once leveled list injection has occurred, removal would be require game save surgery. I try to avoid them as sometimes they make your save even buggier.
Starting on a new character or a save made before the mod was installed, use FO4edit to remove the leveled item and quest records from the mod's esp BEFORE running the game and saving.
Found this trick by accident. Is this a result of this mod, or part of the vanilla game? So far it's the only bracket-text-to-symbol trick I can find in the game.

Edit: Xbone version available.
