Regarding the Brown-Face Bug, please note the following:
The HD DLC is NOT 2K faces. The vanilla game is 500 x 500, and the HD DLC only increases face resolutions to 1K (1024 x 1024). (I might've given incorrect information about this before, and if so, I apologize.)
2K Hancock only works if you have downloaded one of the other 2K face textures here on Nexus, such as Real HD Face Textures 2K. Those mods contain all the facial assets such as eyebrows, scars, moles, etc., at 2K resolution that this mod also uses. They all have to be the same resolution for it to work.
Other resolutions (i.e., 4K, 8K) are not currently available. Will this be an option? Yes! But I have to learn out how to upscale them (preferably through ESRGAN rather than Photoshop's upscaling, which can have mixed results) before I post anything. Right now I don't have a way to test that in-game, but as time goes on and GPUs get better and more available, I will do so to keep up with the demand for higher resolutions. I'm just beginning the process, so I don't know if it'll be a week or a month, but I hope soon. Stay tuned for that.
If you are getting the Brown-face Bug, you have two choices:
Download a 2K face pack such as Real HD Face Textures, or
Downgrade back to 1K of this mod.
If you have done the above two things and are STILL getting the Brown-face Bug:
Go back through your mod list and uncheck any mods that might affect skin textures for both ghouls and humans, including 4K skin textures or ghoul mods.
Check mod pages that change ghouls for patches that don't make changes to Hancock's character. I know there are a couple, but I don't recall which ones at the moment. You have to do a little digging on your own.
X-cell.ini edit method: compatibility with X-Cell for Fallout 4 for New OR Old Gen 9 (this is easiest and probably best):
[/b]X-cell does give us a way to exclude specific characters, and this works very well, at least until I can rebuild this mod, so long as you don't have a long shopping list of NPC exclusions. You have been warned.
Go into X-cell Fallout 4 - F4SE > Plugins.
Edit x-cell.ini in Notepad or Notepad++.
At the very bottom type hancock=00022613, like so:
; Optionally exclude some NPCs. Specify the parent FormID. ; The larger this list, the worse the optimization. ; Example <UniqueName>=<FormID>. [facegen_exception] ; piper=0x2f1e hancock=00022613
Save, close Notepad, run the game.
Bake cake.
Eat it.
------- FO4Edit method: Compatibility with X-Cell for Fallout 4 on FO Old-Gen:
If you're having issues with X-Cell for Fallout 4 making Hancock's face look funky or giving you the brown face bug, you may want to go in and check this in FO4Edit to fix it.
Load up SexyHancock4.0.esp in FO4Edit.
Expand the Non-Player Character (Actor) sub-menu and click on Hancock to highlight the line.
One the right hand side of the screen, scroll down a bit to ACBS Configuration > Flags and double-click the entry on the right to bring up the pop-up menu that's showing on the left.
Check "Is CharGen Face Preset" and click OK.
CTRL + S to save, and exit.
I thought I'd tried all that, and I couldn't remember what I'd actually uploaded, so it may not even be an issue for anyone, but apparently I had not! Thanks to johnny3tearsuxa for the tip! ---------------------------------------- Incompatible Mod Warning:
X-Cell for Fallout 4 by Perchik71 is an excellent performance-enhancing mod that fixes some bugs with both Pre-gen and NextGen versions of the game. However, due to the way it generates facegen data dynamically via script, it completely negates this mod. It reverts Hancock back to his vanilla face, even though the body texture stays the same. You can disable the Facegen option in X-Cell, but of course that effects the rest of the game.
I might experiment with facegen data for Hancock, but even if that works, it will make changing any of his facial features in LooksMenu totally pointless since X-Cell basically flattens the layers of tints and features for faces (i.e., eyebrows, scars, makeup, etc.) and makes one texture. I can see how this would definitely be more efficient for gameplay especially applied across the whole game, but might screw up any mod that uses loose textures for faces.
Basically, it comes down to a choice: do you want a game that's built for aesthetics, or do you want a game that's optimized for performance, because apparently it's impossible to have both. 🫤
EDIT 6/15/2024: So NOW I think we have the Depravity patches sorted. You have to download the patch by the eye color you chose when you installed the main mod. It's kind of clunky, but if it works, it works.
Thank you so much to TheShadyBunny for making these patches. I just was not getting it and they jumped in and saved my skin. They deserve all the credit for this. ❤ -------- Depravity - A Harmless Bit of Fun patch has been added. Before you mess up your game, read the following:
I have not thoroughly tested this patch myself. I don't use Depravity, but it should work. My guess is if it doesn't, you'll know when you get to a certain point. (Trying to remain spoiler-free, here.)
This patch is for Hancock's default look in the images on the main mod page--that is, beardless with long hair. I haven't done any other choices yet because I'll have to change the whole mod if I do, but I am considering at least a few options.
If you change any of Hancock's looks in LooksMenu within the game (i.e., hair, skin tone, eye color, beard style, etc.) it will break the immersion for Depravity. Again, my guess is when you get to a certain part, you'll know right away whether something is screwed up. You can either re-run the FOMOD installer for Sexy Hancock 4.0, or live with it. It shouldn't mess up the story, though, since it's purely a visual change.
Load order matters! Read the description on the optional files when you download for an example order. It's safe to say you should probably put this mod and the patch below the Depravity file.
I am not endorsing Depravity, nor am I offering support for it. I honestly don't know anything about it or the author who made it. I just dug through the files to find out what the conflict or difference was since some users were asking for it. If something about Hancock appears amiss and you have checked load order and other factors, let me know and I'll take another look.
might seem like a silly question, but i don't like messing around with any customization menus for non-sole survivor (I'll end up playing a fashion game before i even get to diamond city.) If i just download the 1k pack and not mess with it at all; will Hancock have the blacked out eyes? or will he have the blue ones in all the screenshots?
edit: got my answer, forgot that vortex lets you pick when you download the mod.
I'm not real familiar with Vortex, but if you're a savvy enough modder, you can pretty much pick out anything you want and remove anything else. At its basic level, it's just some textures and a plugin that makes it possible to apply those textures to him. You could either go into FO4 edit and remove all the eye textures under HeadParts, or rename the texture you want and put it in the mod's folder. I hope one of those solutions--or something I'm not even thinking about right now--worked for you.
I dunno. The description on Better Companions claims it is compatible as long as companion stats aren't changed. The newest version of this mod removed any edits I make to base game stats for Hancock. The changes weren't real significant anyway, but this mod only changes his appearance. He's even still a ghoul (other mods change him to human).
My guess is Better Companions is script-based, so maybe it will work. Download it and give it a shot.
Oh, my goodness! Thank you so much for the comment! Yeah, the Burnside look never did it for me, either. I would imagine trying to groom any facial hair over radiation burns would be not worth the trouble--you'd either grow it all out or just not be able to. Either version makes about as much sense as Fallout radiation "science," anyway, but the hopeless fangirl in me supersedes lore. LOL
It does look good, but looks too much like a ghoulfied super model for my taste. After being linked to the conept art, I hope one day we get a mod that resemble that a bit more.
Honestly the best and my favorite mod for Hancock. So glad you didn’t let the idea die out, You really did the mod and the King of the Zombies justice, the commitment for mod with all the updates/patches is awesome. Incredible job thanks!!
(was hoping you can show some love for our prototype friendly neighborhood detective Nick Valentine and revive another idea like the Nick Valentine Android Face Texture by Fuse00)
Aw, thanks! I'm really glad you like it. As for Fuse00's Valentine texture, yikes! I dunno...that is some Uncanny Valley nightmare fuel, there. I always liked Nick looking old and busted. It fit his cranky personality. LOL I'll consider it, though, once I can sit at my computer again for longer periods without my back bothering me (speaking of cranky).
I was struggling to get this to work. I found the instructions and versions confusing. I was getting a smooth Hancock or a brown Hancock or most of the time both. Here's what I figured out. I'm not an expert. I have next gen update.
I didn't want to install the Real HD texture mod because I didn't like the way it looked. The way the instructions here were worded, I thought I could use the 1k version without it. That didn't work. The 1k version didn't work for me with it either.
Ultimately, I realized the Real HD texture mod is modular so you can install the Main Files portion and not the airbrushed looking skin textures. That coupled with the 2k version of this mod worked for me. I would prefer to have only cosmetic changes and not a character overhaul, but oh well.
I wasn't sure how it would work on Next Gen with the new texture archives. I'm still on Old Gen so I can't test it.The Real 2K HD Faces is simply because all the assets and character features are sized to 2K with that mod, since Hancock is kind of a hybrid ghoul/human here and uses those assets. Honestly, you'd probably be fine with 1K without much notice. But whatever face texture pixel dimension you go with for humans has to match which ever one you download here. There aren't a ton of choices for that if you must have 2K, unless you want to resize everything yourself. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
So just to recap:
1k Human :: 1k Hancock, - OR - 2K Human :: 2K Hancock Pick a size and don't mix.
As for the stat adjustments, that something I regret--it's easy enough to remove in FO4Edit, but any future versions won't do that.
I've been working and testing a Facegen version that shouldn't require any plugin, and I finally got one to work. It doesn't look as good, IMO, and I'm still learning how to tweak things for the Creation Kit face generator so he doesn't look like a slab of uncooked bacon, but at least I'm not getting huge black holes in his face anymore. Facegen is the new 2024 hotness, so I'll try to release a version soon. Things changed a lot from when I first released this to now, including me and my knowledge and skill level. I'm doing my best.
If you enable the "is char gen face present" flag for Hancock in Xedit then X-Cell won't revert the changes to his face. That way you can keep X-Cell's working facegen for everything else. Seemed to work okay on my end, but with admittedly limited testing.
Wow! Thank you so much! I tried it on a new un-modded game, except for X-Cell, UFO4P, F4SE, and this mod and it worked! I could have sworn I tried that, but obviously not, and I couldn't remember what I'd actually uploaded. So this may be a non-issue at all for everyone, but if it is, give the fix above this a shot. And a big kudos to you for the tip. :)
For the record, I did try the FaceGen thing by dropping the texture in the FaceCustomization folder. It worked but the results were...unfortunate. Nightmare fuel, to be precise. It's because I switched him back to being a ghoul for the newest version, but he's really more human here (as least as far as facial morphs go), so texture wasn't enough. I think my next version will have to be re-built all over again, this time making him his own race instead of making changes to the base GhoulRace instead. I know better now. Then I can do more stuff with that, including making a player character plug-in, even going as far as including the AI generated voice lines from player > Hancock's voice using FallTalk. I admit to feeling a little morally gray doing it, and I'm still ironing out some weird phrases (i.e., "Goooood dog" came out as "Go oh oh oh dog"), but I'm shocked how well it actually works and sounds like him.
Yes, the CharGen flag will make NPC_ faces show for X-Cell users who do not have FaceGen files for those NPC. Setting the flag forces a face to be dynamically generated by the game engine every time the character is within a certain range though. CharGen works fine on old gen but should be sparingly used on FONG. X-Cell does great memory management and fixes FO4 to finally use FaceGen after all these years. So X-Cell + FaceGen effectively fixes the game-breaking stutters of FONG.
There is a surprisingly noticeable difference when I had it on vs. when I had it off. I'm still on FOOG, mostly because I'm still waiting for one of the screenshot mods to update (I really just like making dorky FO comics. These mods were just a byproduct of that silly little hobby!).
But "facegen" is the new "previs/precombine" war cry/trigger phrase, so I think I'm gonna have to play with a new version a little more to see if I can get it to play nice. So far, no dice. I think I make too many changes to the GhoulRace in this version. My experiments so far are either making him a heavily cosmetically modified Ghoul or a heavily stat-modified Human, which worked as long as facegen was broken. So I think I'm gonna have to rebuild Hancock his own thing. (I feel Iike he'd dig that.) Meanwhile, at least X-cell gives us an option to opt out specific NPCs.
Wonderful! I'm glad you like it! And since you mentioned it, Tumbajumba is working on the outfit The Ghoul wore in the show and I'm just itching to stuff Hancock in it. 😮
Hey, I adore this mod. John has never looked cooler! However, I am getting the BFB and can't for the life of me figure out why. I don't have any 2k mods, have the appropriate version of this mod, and have no mods that alter the texture of ghouls or regular humans. Help? T uT ty
Edit: I somehow fixed the bfb but now the eyes I selected aren't showing, just the default jaundiced ones T uT any idea what could be causing this? thanks
I just posted a note to this right above with a mod warning the same day you posted this, so not sure if you saw it. Do you have X-cell for Fallout 4 by chance? I just installed it not fully understanding what it did to Facegen textures, and it reverted him back to his default look no matter what I did. I tried using the Faceripper preset, Looks Menu changes, even checking my own textures several times. Then I remembered I installed X-cell and Once I uninstalled it, it worked again. For some reason his eyebrows are messed up now, so I just redid my own texture and added those on. I can't tell if it's because I screwed up something with the Ghoul race and how it uses head parts, or if I was just testing it on a save that is just really old and super buggy.
In short, I have no idea. Do you have any mods that change facegen textures or add new faces to the game? I wonder if those might cause a conflict. You could go into the mod folder and just rename the eye texture you want with the name of the default one. You could also try completely removing the mod and reinstalling it again, just don't open the game in between, or John won't be anything but a nightmarish set of eyeballs and teeth floating in the air.
I'm thinking of rebuilding this mod from the ground up again, scaling back some of the in-game Looks Menu customizations and just making some presets you choose through a FOMOD. There's too many variables to juggle now between pre- and post-NextGen F4SE weirdness.
Does this version of Sexy Hancock need a patch for Depravity like the original mod did? I opened up xEdit and it said their was no conflicts but but I am a complete xEdit novice.
Sorry for the late reply! Life has been full of challenges lately. As for Depravity...I have no idea. Neither Depravity or the Patch say what exactly changes about Hancock, and I'm strictly stuck on an iPad right now for a while while my house is being gutted. I doubt their patch would work for this mod, though. I'd say make a test save and try it? Just load this below Depravity and see what happens. Abort if it doesn't work. I won't be able to make a patch for a while though, but I'd still like to know what you found out!
I would absolutely love that patch if you wouldn't mind sharing! I made it to "that one part" in Depravity, and I was getting a CTD every time I tried to enter the State House, so I downgraded to the original SH with the old patch, but now I'm dealing with a brown face issue because I have 2k face textures. I think I might just have to give up Depravity, but that's so sad because it adds so much great content for those of us on our 1094279th playthrough.
So yeah, I'd be forever grateful if you messaged the link to me directly, please!
P.S. Would it be a problem if you just posted the patch on your own? Being respectful of creators and making sure not to steal content is crucial, yes, but I was under the impression that patches are fair game since they just help two mods work better together... I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong though.
I'm looking at the files now and man the Depravity mod has LAYERS. I keep finding other things I need to download and install. Now that I see what's happening (I'm trying to remain spoiler free), I can do it, but it's gonna take me a day or so to get it working. Hang in there with me!
Ahhh! Thank you so much for the patch~ It's not working for me but I will figure it out. It keeps telling me the SEXYHANCOCK4.0.ESP is missing but it's not, and it's enabled and I have it in the correct order :/ Depravity -> Sexy 4.0 > Sexy Patch.
Oh, dang. I'll have to look at it again. I admit, I'm out of my element here since I don't know the Depravity mod, but even on a new game with no there mods, I should be able to use console commands to figure it out. Bear with me!
