It doesn't seem to work right. Instead of removing shadows, it just plunges the entire world under one giant shadow. The sky is bright, but the world is dark, as if it were close to sunset. I changed fShadowDistance and fShadowDirDistance from 99999999 to 1, and the giant shadow shrunk to a circular shadow around my character. It looks ugly, but at least the world looks normal now, and the framerate is much better.
I do not know why but this does not work any more. I have been using this mod for ages. After the new fallout update when using these setting I get flickering sunlight in bright sun. For example when exiting Vault 111 at the start of the game and looking at the sun.
Make sure after you change and save the settings you right click on the Fallout4Prefs.ini document file, go to properties, make sure the read only box is checked , if it is not checked the game will revert back to its old settings every time you restart the game.
Well increased fBlendSplitDirShadow to fBlendSplitDirShadow=10000000000.0000 and I do not get the flicker anymore. Though I randomly increased this number.
I have also found if you set ShadowDistance= to 0 and fDirShadowDistance= to 0 you get much better frame rates. I also use EMB to make the game darker to make the game less bright and the saturation higher to remove the bleached out look in bright sunlight.
I have an older mid tier gaming rig and always had issues, not huge problems but noticeable fps drop. I remade my character yesterday, changed mods etc and my fps dropped to 25-35 in South Boston. I tried a smiliar fix but that made it even worse and I've got several ctds. I deleted and replaced the values from your guide and I think the game is at least playable again.
I have a gaming pc with an rtx 3070 and a laptop with a gtx 1080. These garbage shadows don't care what card you have. You're better off using detailed shadows and more ambient occlusion through an enb.
I've had FO4 24/7 nighted out for years just becasue of teh terrible shadows. Now I can play it with some sunlight on all the modding I've done.
Its not tricky, but a little effort to get this all stuck in the INI. I just deleted all the lines that need to be replaced, and then copy pasted this into the top of the "display" section. You have to make it read only or it reverts some stuff and as Timrath says you get flickering lines.
And it DOES make the framerate better. I always remove or reduce shadows on any game that does, just becasue they're always so heavy on the card.
This is a real elixer. I dont know anything about coding but it would be awesome of somebody could just make these settings INJECTABLE. Some kind of F4SE plugin.
But I've tried everything for years, every setting I could try in BethINI, and nothing worked.

Thank You !
I could not solve the flickering I was getting from this, until your post.
Much appreciated !
