When crafting ammo, I often found that sources of Lead were scarce. Automatic weapons and ammo-hog heavy weapons are fun but deplete stocks too rapidly, and replenishing ammo was expensive. I couldn't find any mods that really clicked as a good solution - until I played Fallout 76, where Lead-based paint was introduced as a source of lead for ammo. I liked the system so well, that I ported it over to Fallout 4.
Now all paint cans in the game and painted childrens toys (Toy Cars, Toy Trucks, Baby Rattles, Toy Aliens, Toy Rocketships, and Wooden Blocks) provide lead. In addition, all cans, both Tin and Aluminum, now provide a unit of lead in addition to their other ingredients. And lastly, Combination Wrenches now provide a unit of Lead in addition to their Steel. Can Chimes, once a mere nuisance, are now a valuable source of ammo components.
If you use AWKCR an optional patch has been provided that adds Lead to the paint cans used for the new colors.
If you need some Fertilizer to go with your Lead for ammo crafting, I recommend checking out the 'Auto-Butcher from Manufacturing Extended' and using it alongside the 'Composter Contraption'. This is a great way to add more fertilizer in a way that doesn't break immersion or feel out of place.
