If you get an error in the terminal / console window saying codec can't decode byte, there are two things you can try:
1.) Keep the EXE in a folder with a short and simple path name. For example: "C:\Crash Logs" (If that doesn't work, try 2.) 2.) Open the original crash log (NOT the Autoscan Report) with Notepad, select File > Save As... and make sure that Encoding is set to UTF-8, then press Save and overwrite the original crash log file. After that, run the CLASSIC.exe again.
If you get any other error, make sure you have the latest version of CLASSIC and run it in admin mode or through MO2.

I couldn't find anything in the comments about my issue, except something related to an older anti-virus software that I don't use.
Anyway, I downloaded the file, and once I unzipped it Windows Defender quarantined it saying it detected Wacatac.B!ml trojan.
I decided to have Defender remove it until I could get some confirmation. Is it a false flag? Have others had this issue? I'm trying to avoid joining a discord server and bother someone about my crashing issues, but I have no idea how to even begin understanding how to read the crash log and what its telling me is the issue. Hence why I came here.
I've had issues in the past with Defender flagging Cheat Engine (I play modded Dark Souls, comes in handy) but I'm just trying to be as cautious as possible.
Yes, it's a false positive, but it's weird that Windows Defender is doing it since I literally have it running all the time and get 0 warnings. You can always check the zip yourself withVirusTotal, Nexus even does this automatically, you can see the report by clicking on the green checkmark next to the file download in the Files Tab. Any exe file can end up as a false positive on any system and with any antivirus.
I'm almost positive it has nothing to do with it, more than likely Windows is just being touchy because of the nature of the program. I mean, it did flag Cheat Engine, and others have said the reason it does that is just because it edits files directly. I'm familiar with this kind of thing. I had to whitelist MO2 in my firewall so as not to trigger it.
I did use Virus Total, it told me all clear, except for Gridinsoft, and Zillya. The first flagged it as "Ransom.Win64.Wacatac.oa!s1" and "Trojan.Generic.hrfzm". The second claimed it was "Dropper.Agent.Script.405" but otherwise undetected as to what it was. Otherwise everything else is green, with some security vendors being grayed out for time out, or just an inability to process the file.
Here's a link to the screenshot I took, if necessary.
I'm having an issue related to antivirus. I also got flagged by BitDefender, which auto quarantined the program. However, now when I'm trying to delete the CLASSIC exe to do a fresh reinstall, it's telling me only the administrator can delete the file. I... I am the system administrator? I can't remove it via Vortex either. What do I do about this?
Having the same problem. BitDefender flagged it as a malicious application. And now i can not delete it. It also says that i need administrator privilages to delete it.
EDIT: I have deleted it in safe mode. But now i am not sure any more if i should try to install this again. Is it really malicious software or was it just a false positive?
Bit Defender did the same thing to me. It opened , I ran it, it ran about a minute building a list and it crashed. Tried to rerun it again and bit defender popped up telling me it has some crazy virus. Allowed it. Ran it again and windows popped up saying I don't have admin rights that it came from another computer. What? Tried setting it as admin and windows denied it. What? Tried reinstalling it from zip file. Windows wouldn't even let me overwrite the .exe to reinstall it again. What? Wouldn't even let me delete it. What? There is something in it things out there does not like. Especially windows. I'm gonna have to run in safe mod to delete it. Sure would like to try it. Just got FO4 rolled back and working again. I activated a couple mods and now it crashes. Couldn't remember which ones, got distracted, they didn't show up in the mod list. (Yes, I disabled them 5 at a time and that didn't work). Have over 350 mods, hoped this would save me some time. If anybody knows a workaround sure would like to hear it. If I find a way I will let you know. FIXED IT. Rebooted. Made a new folder, extracted it and it ran. What? Bit defender may have spooked windows. BTW: What does this mean? TypeError: expected str, bytes or os.PathLike object, not NoneType. (Was at end of list). Turned out it was my NVIDIA driver not a mod per crash log. that saved me a lot of work. Great Tool, thanx. Endorsed for sure.
Hello there , im having a bit of trouble after installing a mod called fallout emotions 2 that changes the expressions of dead people. ive been having crashes since using this mod and even after removing it apparently is still causing them. Dont know if there is something left behind even though i can t find it.
I'm encountering several issues when trying to use Classic. The first happens when I try to run the "Scan Crash Logs" button. It spams a ton of windows saying "an error occurred while updating the output text box: list index out of range" I've tried reinstalling the mod several times and also triple checking the file paths to each location ( crash logs, mods folder and .ini folder). The second issue I have is that the scanner doesn't seem to ever finish its scan of any folder. When I don't get that error, I'll press the scan button and it will say that it's scanning for literal hours with no updates. Is there anything I missed when installing or is it something else? Thanks for everything!
I'll probably make a seperate post about this once I learn more and/or contact the mod author but the Python based code that this app runs off of is apparently incompatible with later versions (specifically 24H2 and later) of Windows 11. I'm not a big coder myself, as I only have a little amateur experience with some languages, but I also received the same error and though it looks similar to Python errors I received in class and lo and behold, yeah it's pretty much a Python based thing. Even the very good Collective Modding Toolkit utility points out that this tool, as well as the (in)famous Wyre Bash, both have pretty much the same problem on newer Windows 11 OSes. In other words, look out for modding tools that use Python if you have an up-to-date Windows machine. I'll look into this more but that's why I'd imagine a good bit of CLASSIC users are having issues running the thing right now.
Turns out im just retarded i installed it in a folder that i didnt have permission to somehow so it didnt start
this s#*! damn saved me hours and hours of crash finding wow im not gonna lie i want to kiss the creator on the lips rn works perfectly helped me fix my stuff just gotta raed the documentation
Welp, far as I can tell this app doesn't do much. I am using Buffout4 with PDB support, it is creating crash logs with the correct naming and .log file. I tried putting them right in C:\, turned off FCX Mode as someone else suggested below (tried with this checked also), and the files are UTF-8, but nothing happens when I run this. All it does is tell me to wait, but after 30 minutes (multiple attempts) nothing ever happens. ❓ PLEASE WAIT WHILE CLASSIC CHECKS YOUR SETTINGS AND GAME SETUP... ✔️ ALL CLASSIC AND GAME SETTINGS CHECKS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED! This is when attempting to scan crash logs and I have not tried scanning the mods folder. I was going to but given the above behavior and then when clicking on the "Browse Folder" button for the "STAGING MODS FOLDER" path after setting the CUSTOM SCAN FOLDER path it popped up the directory to the crash logs and not the mods folder. The whole thing makes me a little skeptical. Why are they both pointing to the same path when they are not the same?
I found out that it is creating new crash log files at C:\Modding\FO4 Crash Log Auto Scanner\Crash Logs
It created 9 of these and I had just 1 sitting in the path I pointed the CUSTOM SCAN FOLDER to which was created by Buffout. I'm not real sure what I'm supposed to do with these new files, send them to the Discord? The whole reason I wanted to try this out was to hopefully avoid doing that as I don't use Discord for anything currently.
This mod caused my game to completely stop working with a fatal crash after I removed looksmenu because it was causing a crash, apparently it changed some sort of F4EE setting for 1.16.20 in Buffout 4 but I have 1.16.18 so it wasnt gonna work.
Currently running CLASSIC v7.31.0 Staging Mods Folder and Custom Scan Folder are set correctly. No errors on startup. Currently running through Vortex dashboard.
When I click on the "Scan Crash Logs" button, I receive this error message six times in a row, one on top of the other, in less than a second:
An error occurred while updating the output text box: list index out of range [OK]
This is what shows on the CLASSIC output text box at the bottom of the application:
REFORMATTING CRASH LOGS, PLEASE WAIT... SCANNING CRASH LOGS, PLEASE WAIT... Traceback (most recent call last): File "CLASSIC_Interface.py", line 633, in run File "CLASSIC_ScanLogs.py", line 1088, in crashlogs_scan File "CLASSIC_ScanLogs.py", line 503, in __init__ File "CLASSIC_ScanLogs.py", line 380, in __init__ sqlite3.IntegrityError: UNIQUE constraint failed: crashlogs.logname
This same error occurs with or without "FCX Mode" selected and with or without the folder mods filled or blank.
I FIXED IT: I had updated the newest version over the old version, which was not working for me. This must have also caused issues with the new version. I deleted everything from my CLASSIC folder and installed the new version in a clean directory. Now it works. Hope this helps others. Now to figure out why I'm crashing.
Hello, I recently moved my entire Steam folder out of the x86, and since then when I try to scan crash logs I just get a buzzer sound 3 times. The F4SE folder didn't change places so I really don't know what to think...

I'm not touching this mod anymore - not even with a 10 foot pole!
Even if its a false alarm. Why even chrome flags it as dangerous?
New update is Bearfoos.A!ml as WinDef says.
ive been having crashes since using this mod and even after removing it apparently is still causing them. Dont know if there is something left behind even though i can t find it.
I use vortex, buffout and crash auto scan.
would appreciate any input on this issue. Thanks

[WinError 32] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process
How to solve this? Also there's a button Copy to clipboard and it doesn't work.
Does anyone have a fix?
I cannot seem to get it to work.
I get the following error message: "An error occurred while updating the output box: list index out of range".
Anyone got this message and got it to work?
I have Fallout pre-Next Gen. I have tried enabling and disabling FCX mode, but it does not solve the issue.
