Yeah, BethINI (and other tools of that sort) or even manual Notepad edits are preferable to replacing an entire file with another one and overriding the user's custom settings in the process.
I've specifically put the lines you need to configure so everyone can do it themselves without there actually being a need to download my files, for anyone that's worried about my custom settings. Again, not everyone uses BethINI, I for one never have and don't plan to. For anyone wondering what settings I have, I have my game set up on High, you can always lower them even if you download my files.
Any further BethINI related comments will be deleted as I see absolutely no reason to them being here. If you wanna use BethINI that's just fine, but don't spam the page with these.
this took me a bit to manually figure out. This still works though, and if you have problems like I did navigating it, heres a fix.
INSTALLATION: - drop this .ini into your MO2/Vortex or any other mod organizer software's folder
so this was the issue, its "C:\......\Local\ModOrganizer\Fallout 4\profiles\{profile name}"for me.
Other wise there is a picture next to the "profile name" that looks like a "folder", if you select it, click "Open .INI files" then you'll be presented where MO2 saves its own version of `fallout4prefs.ini` that this mod is going to replace.
- if you're not using any mod organizers then the default locations should be Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Fallout4 - replace the .ini in Documents\My Games\Fallout4 for extra safety The downloads only help me earn points on Nexus, they are not mandatory, you can do it yourself in your own files. Configuring lines in the .ini files
//this is comment, dont include this in the .ini file
bTopMostWindow=0 //force the game over other programs?
bBorderless=0 //Borderless or bordered?
bFull Screen=1 //fullscreen or not fullscreened?
iSize H=1080 //screen height
iSize W=1920 //screen width
if the info is backwards, its bc I can't tell the difference. So switch the two settings to what you have.
also note: if it crashes your game, then you messed something up along the way, nothing related to your other mods.
I can't believe it was that easy. I had an inkling MO was behind some of the fuckery after changing things manually didn't do anything, but I didn't expect it to be so quick to solve once you know where to actually go Thanks for the info
Hello. I might be late here but here's my 2024's 2 cents about this:
- I played Fallout 4 on Vortex for the last year or so. Been away on work 2 weeks, came back and now the game starts in small window (starts normally on steam or desktop launcher) 1. Great thing u have done to "fix" this issue 2. for ppl with low or no moding skills you are talking a different language. For example what is "MO2" ? Where exactly am I suppose to copy these files? ( pls assume that if i knew these things i would have edited my own .ini files like i've been doing for countless other games, but i don't know)
So if You still wanna help and you are still around, pls help the helpless (probably just me). Tell me EXACTLY where to do and what to do.
Right, right, I forgot people don't read... Here's MY 2024's couple of cents on your comment though: 1. If you took like 2 seconds to read the sticky posts you would've had your answers 2. If you searched "mo2" on Google, you would've had the first result show up as Mod Organizer 2 3. You can't expect every mod author to do the research in your place, especially when you already have all the information available right here. 4. Please, for the love of God, just read the instructions that are in the description, as well as in the sticky posts... Now... considering you're asking me after 2 years and I haven't even played FO4 in about the same time, I'd really advise you actually read instructions before you say you don't know anything...
This ini edit unfortunately crashed my game as it was causing a divide by zero error. It may need to be updated for the new fallout 4 version. I poorly made the noob mistake of overriding instead of saving the old files and now I can't get it to work correctly. It's telling me my fse4 is out of date when it was working before I downloaded this. Just catastrophic failure lol. I'm not mad at you I'm mad at bethesda that this is even a thing that I have to bullshit my way through JUST to run in windowed borderless.

I'd look into restoring your older files/verifying steam files after deleting the ones you pasted in? and then manually editing/BethINI instead. The files were made before Bethesda decided to update the game again after god knows how long... shoulda done the manual editing or BethINI instead, knowing the game was updated since tbh. Note that my files are from 11th July 2022 and I haven't played the game since the new updates, don't really plan on playing soon either honestly. I left this up so people would have the files for the older version and a guide, note how the files aren't a mandatory download since you can do the edit manually as mentioned on the main page's instructions. If you're looking to downgrade your game however, I think F4SE build: 0.6.23 is the one you're looking for, but I could be wrong. I just did a little bit of research and I think the game version before the Next Gen update was 1.10.163, but again, I could be wrong considering it's been 2 years and I didn't think they'd update Fallout 4... HOWEVER if you're already on that game version and on that specific F4SE build then I think you fucked up somewhere, cause you're not supposed to crash.
If you still have issues, I'd say look to get F4SE 0.6.23 if you downloaded another version, since you're already on: Fallout 4 v1.10.163
I went ahead and left a disclaimer telling people to be more careful, also renamed the "fix" to (outdated) so everyone is more aware of the situation.
NOTE: I will not help anyone with fixing their game from this point going forward, unless I start playing again and encounter these issues myself. You have all the information I can provide at this time. I don't know if I'll start playing FO4 anytime soon since I'm busy with making this Baldur's Gate 3 mod collection -> Tales of The Forgotten and with writing my story, which can be found on Thunder Lord's Legacy on Royal Road and Thunder Lord's Legacy on Wattpad
the issue is the game wouldn't launch on fullscreen I tried to put your game file manually and nothing happened after that tried Vortex and MO2 and I got the same result
Thanks bud this helped fix my tiny fallout window. I already tried some messing with the inis but I was missing stuff so I just downloaded your files and replaced them and now I got 2k screen!!
Hello and thank you for your efforts. The windowed mod is not a solution for all graphics cards. The Nvidia not too weak for example, manage the full screen better than the windowed mod. The windowed mod is an extra calculation for the graphics card. Also consider your texture resolutions in the options. Don't ask too much, because it's the game itself that has problems with too high a resolution like 4k.
This is a google translation of your comment. I don't know how accurate it is, but I wanted to say, that I have no idea what you're trying to say here. English is my secondary language and I very much have trouble understanding French. I'm using a Dual RTX 3060 12GB GPU, which is obviously an Nvidia graphics card. My screen is of 2K resolution, Ultra Wide, and the game is perfectly capable of handling native monitor resolutions. These tweaks will help in most cases. If you have issues, then it's most likely due to something else.
Are you sure you followed instructions properly? If it's caused by F4SE this will fix it. By the way, have you tried to actually put your game in full screen in-game?
I am having problems playing this game with full screen mode. It automatically crashes after a short period of time, but it is running fine with windowed mode. That's the problem. Using a 3070ti with 12700k and still having 40-50 fps is not acceptable for me. Been searching for solution since last month. Will this work?
I'm unsure what could cause your issue, I'm gonna be honest. That said, you can try and let me know if it fixes anything. I have a Dual-RTX 3060 12GB GPU with a 4.2Ghz i7 and 32GB RAM and a 144Hz 2K monitor and I'm running well over 70fps pretty much all the time, heavily modded, enb and reshade included. If this doesn't fix your issue I guess you could try reinstalling gpu drivers maybe? But I'm really not sure what exactly is the issue with your game. If the game is crashing your PC entirely as in it's forcing it to go into sleep mode or to shut down then you're overheating your PSU or GPU, I've had this before. If it's the PSU, you might wanna get that changed, if it's the GPU then I'm not sure, get some fans or something, check for ventilation issues like dust too. You can run GPU Tweak or MSI Afterburner to check your temperature while playing, ideally you'd wanna have a secondary monitor but if you don't have a dual setup, I think there's Riva Tuner that enables an in-game overlay to check stuff? Get some benchmarking software for RAMs and GPU like FurMark or 3DMark or something, I recommend free software as they're usually enough, but get something that's properly taxing your system. See if that's crashing your PC, if it is then it's definitely hardware related.
If it's the game just force closing, crash to desktop also known as a CTD then you can try a couple things: 1. check mod list, if you have a lot of mods they could be incompatible, deactivate all mods and activate them back one by one or in groups of 5 and check your game every time, also check your plugin load order 2. see if your game runs properly without any mods, if you're running a clean install then I'm really not sure. 3. verify files if you're running on Steam, if it's a cracked game then I've no idea what to tell you other than get a better packed one I guess? 4. try compatibility modes and running as administrator Also if you're running mods make sure they're for the correct version of F4SE that you're running.
Lemme know if anything works, not sure what else to tell you at the moment.
Nice to see this issue+fix documented! I've ran into this issue a few months ago and did the same to fix it, however I've noticed that even with the fix applied, if you ALT+TAB anywhere between launching the game and getting to the menu screen, the issue will still occur. This is probably due to me using NVidia's image scaling feature (to help my poor 1050ti push 30+ fps).
Doesn't happen to me and I'm using a dual screen set up so I don't know what to say. The game would probably still go to full screen if you click on the game window after alt+tabing out no ?
