1797 US NAVY BOARDING AXE
Frederick Hoffman was a Philadelphia blacksmith in pre- and post-Revolutionary America. Purportedly, he developed this unusual axe, which varied greatly from European naval axes at the time, when the newly-founded US Navy put out a call for a versatile tool that could both cut and drag rope. Only 300 were created in the initial run, 100 each for the Navy's new frigates. Not many of these axes exist to the present day, and only a scant few have Hoffman's name on them. I've attempted to recreate this interesting piece of history, and maybe my reproduction could bash in a few raider heads. You'll find the axe aboard the USS Constitution.
