Summary

Guards at the post-game military checkpoints heal after a couple of days when they're hurt, but if they die, they're gone. They're not coming back. Once they all die, you lose the checkpoint and associated 'help defend the checkpoint' random encounters. Arguably that's the price of failure, but in practice it means the reward for completing the main quest – the reward of a more populated, immersive world – is taken away forever, and that seems a bit extreme. This mod gives you the opportunity to replace any fallen soldiers by using a distress beacon to call in reinforcements.

Distress beacons can either be crafted at a chemistry station (under 'utility') or bought from the arms vendor belonging to the faction you completed the main quest with (i.e. Ronnie Shaw, Proctor Teagan, Tinker Tom or the synth requisition officer). To use them, go the checkpoint you want to restore to former glories, find the beacon in the aid section of your inventory, and use it as you would any other aid item. Should the checkpoint require reinforcements, you'll place the beacon on the ground and additional guards will arrive after a few in-game hours. If you're not at a checkpoint, you'll get a notification and the beacon will be returned to your inventory. Likewise if you try to place more than one beacon simultaneously.

Installation

Extract files to your data folder and enable the mod in your mod menu or mod manager. Checkpoint distress beacons will only be available once checkpoints have been enabled.

Compatibility

No base files are edited, so compatibility is as broad as it can be! This mod should even work with mods that add further checkpoints, assuming they've been set up correctly. An optional America Rising 2 patch is available to repopulate checkpoints with Enclave guards.

Anticipated FAQs

Can you flag this as an ESL, please?
The beacon has a custom sound effect, so no. Sorry.

Why do I have to pay for the beacons / use materials to craft them / wait for reinforcements to arrive?
If you fail to defend a checkpoint, there should at least be some repercussions, right?

Why is the game saying there isn't a checkpoint in the area when I'm standing right at one?
A quest alias probably failed to fill properly. Try moving around a bit or leaving the area and returning.

Why can't I place more than one beacon simultaneously?
Technical limitation.

Why can't I call more than four BoS soldiers? And why can't I call reinforcements if there are already more than three at the checkpoint?
In the vanilla game, there are five possible combinations of BoS guards that can spawn at a checkpoint, and each consists of 3-4 soldiers. Other factions always spawn five guards, presumably because they're not as well equipped.
