I have this mod installed but keep getting skeleton.nif crashes, i have also run VEFS to generate missing facegen data. Could various texture mods cause problems like this? especially for the face and hair.

Does this include face gen even for generic NPCs? like the triggermen, raiders or even random settlers?

i know, i’m using xcell. the base game and dlc’s have facegen for NPCs already, this mod is redundant

Whatever the case, my game would CTD multiple times.
I though it was issues with the "skeleton.nif".
I tested every skeleton mod as well as ran the game with default skeleton. Results same crash.
So this helped. Redundant or not in my case the problem is solved.

Which version of X-Cell are you using, because my understanding as well is that this isn't required for the base game? 5+GB is a lot to throw at something if you're not sure why it's working.

Latest version and previous of X-Cell.
Uploading lighter version 1K. This one has 2K textures is why its 5GB+.

How odd - in the pinned comment at the top of the X-Cell posts page (emphasis added):

Users mistakenly believed that any pre-generated FaceGen data for their modifications worked. After simple and effective testing by replacing textures in the pre-generated FaceGen data, we found out that any pre-generated FaceGen data is not loaded for any characters that the game reads from non-original Bethesda plugins. Thus, FaceGen data was read only for characters specified in all original game plugins including DLCs and Creation Club.

Your crash has nothing to do with Facegen, but with some kind of load accelerator mod or rusty face fix mod or hi poly face mod.

Leave MA alone, 2K faces without mipmap is GOOD. It is better to return 2K for download without mipmap.

    Hey it’s me again.endorsed!
Is there any side effect if I use this mod alone? Or it needs Xcell to generate the facege otherwise it won’t take any effect?
cause currently I’m using Buffout, and there are several functions in Xcell already carry out by Buffout, so I wonder this.
looking forward to hear back from u

Alone it will only be taking up space since they are already in the base game files.

      Note:
      X-Cell does not generate data.

      As mentioned by @rubenthekid5954
Its to prevent stutters when loading into cells with npc's that don't have generated facegen data or whatever, for stability purposes.

      X-Cell is merely a performance mod :)
In fact merely is an understatement.

thank u for the reply, i am still confusing about all the face gen topics, because i have never ever seen a npc without head, i guess thats because i did not install any npc edit mods. anyways. i will keep this mod in my load order with x-cell, i assume there will be no side effect doing so?

I thought the facegen issues (all of them) were from player added mods, not the official plugins.

      Possibility true,
But no matter what soon as I enabled X-Cell I would get kicked back to desktop with the crash pointing to Fallout4.esm
Only thing I haven't tested was running my mod list with only the required setup files and base game alone to see if i would CTD.

What worked was soon as I added these in and went to the locations that would crash it didn't.

      Indeed its very weird

If x-cell is the only mod you have, I'd be inclined to say it's not configured correctly.  What was telling you the cause of the crash, Buffout4?

I know you need to disable the mem manager in Buffout4 if you also use x-cell, but bo4 has 3 different mem managers, it's unclear if you need to disable all of them or just the general I'm an idiot, X-Cell Description page clearly shows which options need to be disabled.  Pasta Fazool, I am a fool

And yes, testing with ONLY x-cell and the official plugins is like the FIRST thing you should do.  How else are you gonna confirm that's actually the mod causing the problem?  That goes for literally any mod.   It's usually when you have more than one (as is usually the case) that problems arise.

Conflict resolution is a mega-bitch.  Not for nothing, but I've also fixed really weird glitches in weird non-sensical ways.
Like quests not activating by deleting and rebuilding my .ini.  or my personal favorite, my turret combat a.i. was disabled for all turrets, owned and enemy because of a bashed patch containing ONLY leveled lists.

Id consider this mod a "workaround" until you actually shoot the real trouble.  I'm off to find out why my 100% stable LO suddenly ctds after leaving the tutorial house... Probably because I need to change the oil in my car or something..

I 10000000% agree with everything you said.

Lmao @ Probably because I need to change the oil in my car or something..

Currently I'm knee deep in with 1676 active mods running. I dread doing a full dumpster dive at the moment.
Mem management in Buff is setup as requested for X as intended. :) I was sure to read the setup and installation process like a substitute teacher grading his worst kids math test.

Ay, thank you.  That's my first mod :) I remember I was so excited when I made something that worked I almost called out sick the next day to stay up all night and keep working on it.. appreciate the shoutout lol.

As for your mod order, SWEET SEMEN OF BABY JESUS.  At that point.. are you even playing FO4 anymore?  I try to keep my modlist as small and essential as possible. And I float around 480 .

And btw, I managed to fix my constant CTDs with yet another weird thing.  Buffout4 was blaming a different plugin each time I disabled the last plugin loaded on the stack.  Leading me to believe it's not any plugin at all.  I keep 3 copies of FO4 on 3 drives.  100% pristine install, my modded steam install, and a copy of my steam install.  If my mods are fine, I just copy the pristine version and overwrite all the official data in my steam folder.

Game loads perfectly fine, archivelimit unlocked and all.  (I get the infinite load screen glitch without it). Try downloading FO4 again from the steam depots, and overwriting your current one, delete your .inis too.  Sometimes they get corrupted because reasons.

Side note:  How did you manage to genfaces with 4k textures?  The one time I got it to work, selecting 4k textures gave me a 300MB archive.  You do it manually via the CK?

By default, X-Cell has facegen settings set to "true", meaning it's using facegen files. If an NPC doesn't have facegen files, their head disappears. You can disable facegen in X-Cell by switching "facegen=true" to "facegen=false" in X-Cell. With mods like these, that problem shouldn't arise, and FO4 becomes a little more stable.

this is not a problem with x-cell, it’s one of the performance benefits. it prevents the game from dynamically generating facegen if an npc is missing facegen, which is what causes stutter and lag when around large groups of npcs. vanilla and dlc NPCs already have facegen
