FOR THOSE WHO JUST CAN'T RUN THE GAME DUE TO RESHADE REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY DO
HERE'S A POSSIBLE FIX THAT WORKED FOR ME.
1. Install the latest version of Reshade (scroll down to the very bottom of the web page to see the green download button) Link - https://reshade.me/
2. In the Reshade installation pop-up window asking for the game's .exe file, make sure to select the "mafiadefinitiveedition.exe" file and NOT THE "launcher.exe" file.
3. In the Reshade installation pop-up window asking for what rendering API does the game run on, select "Direct3D 10 / 11 / 12". This is because Mafia Definitive Edition runs on the Direct3D 11 rendering API.
4. In the "Select effect packages to install" menu, choose ONLY the ff:
- Standard effects - SweetFX by CeeJay.dk - Color effects by prod80 - qUINT by Marty McFly
^Make sure the checkboxes have a CHECK MARK on them and NOT A SHADED BOX.
DO NOT SELECT "OK" YET!!!
5. The latest version of Reshade (version 4.9.1 as of the time I wrote this comment) didn't include "Pirate shaders by Heathen" in the "Select effect packages to install" menu. We're going to have to add it manually.
- Copy and paste the link of "Pirate shaders by Heathen" (https://github.com/Heathen/Pirate-Shaders/archive/refs/heads/master.zip) inside the textbox that says "Enter ZIP download link to custom repository here".
- Click the "ADD" button beside the the textbox that says "Enter ZIP download link to custom repository here" in order to add it to the "Select effect packages to install" menu list.
6. Click "Ok" to install Reshade with these settings.
7. After the installation is complete, close Reshade.
8. Download the "dxgi.dll" file of the "Mafia III fullscreen fix" (which also works for Mafia Definitive Edition) here - https://github.com/Filoppi/reshade/releases/tag/v4.6.1
9. Place this "dxgi.dll" file to your game directory. Choose and confirm "replace file" option when asked.
10. Rename that same "dxgi.dll" file you just placed to "d3d11.dll".
11. Lastly, download the v1.03 version of the True Vision mod and extract the "DefaultPreset.ini" file. Place this "DefaultPreset.ini" file to your game directory.
12. Run the game as administrator by clicking on the "mafiadefinitiveedition.exe" file either directly, through a shortcut icon, or through your Steam launcher. It doesn't really matter eitherway.
13. While the game is running, press the "Home" button and select "Skip Tutorial" in the pop-up window.
14. Click on the plus sign (+) beside the textbox and it will reveal a "Select Preset" drop-down menu. Select the "DefaultPreset.ini" from the list that pops up.
^The "dxgi.dll" file of the "Mafia III fullscreen fix" is essential to making the game run with Reshade.
After talking with ezmac310, I discovered that what causes ezmac310's game to crash is due to the "MAFIA First Person" mod ( https://www.nexusmods.com/mafiadefinitiveedition/mods/66?tab=posts ) and NOT because of Reshade nor my installation instructions^.
My installation instructions^ should make the game run well with Reshade :)
Thank you, that worked, one problem though, when i'm entering the game, Reshade tells me that "There were some errors compiling the following shaders: Cas.Fx, PD80_01A_RT_Correct_Contrast.fx, PD80_01B_RT_Correct_Color.fx" Saw that PD80 is Prod80_02_Cinetools_LUT in the home tab, If you don't mind helping me out, thanks.
Hi I tried all the steps but still can't get it working. With the reshade applied, the game will crash with 0xc00000142 error and order me to close the game, when I uninstall the reshade sets i can go into the game again. IDK what went wrong
I have an updated (and working) version of this installation guide to make this ReShade mod run well with the game:
Part I - Installing ReShade & True Vision mod
1. Download ReShade 4.6.1 here - https://www.mediafire.com/file/njqdz9m46trm77p/ReShade_Setup_4.6.1.exe/file 2. Create a new folder in your desktop. 3. Copy and paste any .exe file from any PC video game you have (or you can use the mafiadefinitiveedition.exe file) into the newly created folder. 4. Run ReShade 4.6.1 as administrator.
5. In the Reshade installation pop-up window asking for the game's .exe file, select the "[videogame].exe" or "mafiadefinitiveedition.exe" file you placed in the newly created folder in your desktop.
6. In the Reshade installation pop-up window asking for what rendering API does the game run on, select "Direct3D 10 / 11 / 12". 7. In the "Select effect packages to install" menu, choose ONLY the ff:
- Standard effects - SweetFX by CeeJay.dk - Color effects by prod80 - qUINT by Marty McFly - Pirate shaders by Heathen
^Make sure the checkboxes have a CHECK MARK on them and NOT A SHADED BOX.
8. Click "Ok" to install Reshade with these settings. 9. After the installation is complete, close Reshade. 10. Delete the "[videogame].exe" or "mafiadefinitiveedition.exe" file you placed in the newly created folder in your desktop. 11. Copy & paste ALL files INSIDE the newly created folder in your desktop where you installed ReShade 4.6.1 into your Mafia Definitive Edition game folder. 12. Open "ReShade.ini" and change both the "EffectSearchPaths" & "TextureSearchPaths" to the directory location of your ReShade files. Be careful in changing the "EffectSearchPaths" part by NOT DELETING THE "\reshade-shaders\Shaders or \reshade-shaders\Shaders\qUINT" parts at the end. 13. Save your changes. 14. Download the True Vision mod and place the "DefaultPreset.ini" file in your Mafia Definitive Edition game folder. 15. Done. The True Vision mod should work as intended. IGNORE the shaders / textures compiling error stuff that pops up because you will see in-game that it works perfectly.
Part II - Fixing the lag & FPS drop due to using ReShade
The only way to fix this is to make the game run in Borderless Windowed Mode. This also fixes the game window not being in the center of the screen whenever you're in Borderless Windowed Mode.
1. Go to your Steam Library and right-click on Mafia DE and select "Properties" and choose "Create desktop shortcut". You can also go directly to your Mafia DE game folder and find the "mafiadefinitiveedition.exe" file and right-click on it and select "Create shortcut". 2. Right-click the shortcut you just made and select "Properties". 3. Under the "Shortcut" Tab, find the "Run" option and set it to "Maximized". 4. While still in mafiadefinitiveedition.exe Properties, go to "Compatibility" Tab and select "Change high DPI settings". 5. Find "High DPI scaling override" and tick the checkbox on it and select "Application" on the dropdown menu. 6. Click "Ok" then click "Apply" then click "Ok" again. 7. Run the game and while the game is running, right-click on your desktop taskbar and select "Taskbar settings". You may have to Alt-Tab the game to do this. 8. Turn ON / OFF and then turn OFF / ON the "Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode". This will make the game window run in fullscreen despite it being in Borderless Windowed Mode without the desktop taskbar appearing and without any vacant spaces on your screen where you can still see a bit of your desktop background on one side of your screen. You need to do this step every time you run the game unfortunately since this is the only way you can run the game without any vacant spaces in any one side of your screen. 9. Go back to Mafia DE and go to Options > Display and set both Fullscreen & Window Borders to OFF. 10. Done!

I'm sorry but I dont understand that part (English is not my main language), can you give me example of it? Thanks before
@DiteMoron - Well I mean, that's the simplest explanation I can give. Read and understand it carefully and you'll eventually know what to do. You'll figure it out eventually :)
I follow all steps from pinned post. But the recent version of reshade that i installed is: 5.9.2
I can start and play the game with no problem. After i start the game i see the reshade gui. If i press Home the Reshade GUI opens.
But it doen't apply the reshade on the game (the grapichs do not change). I remaped the key to Toggle Reshade On/Off. I pressed the key and nothing happens... I still remaped the key to reload reshade, so i toggle the rehsade on/off nothing happened, after i use the key to reload reshade, still nothing happens.
- I cheked all options posted on the pinned post (chechecked with a v inside the checkbox) - I got the github for the preset that reshade dont have and installed it. The name it showed up was master - I placed DefaultPreset.ini at the root folder of the game - In game i press home but if i click at the + symbol, it opens a search bar. So i just clicked on the combo and selected DefaultPreset.ini from the list. - I Downloaded the "dxgi.dll" file of the "Mafia III fullscreen fix", replace at game's root folder and renamed to d3d11.dll - I tried without rename the dll too.
You need to specifically use ReShade version 4.6.1 to make the True Vision preset work as intended. It won't work properly if you use all of the newer versions of ReShade.
Hi. I tried manual download several times but the file hosted in nexusmods seems to be corrupted or invalid format (winRar error). Do you have it uploaded anywhere else so we can try alternative download? Many thanks!
This question is probably very dumb, but. When i luanch the game its says ''Reshade is now installed succesfully! press 'home' to start the tutorial. WHAT HOME BUTTON? I pressed every button but nothing happened. Its always on my screen. Is there a fix this?
this looks good but the game didnt need restoration as u put it lol. im joking but seriously idk i think reshade makes pixelated images and that one detail gets me distracted from the rest of the great graphics
Эти решейды такие не постоянные с этими частыми обновлениями. Вечно всё ломают. И нельзя сделать так, как было у тебя раньше на старой версии. Дебилы, блять.
