Set the file to read-onlyafter editing it so that the game will not try to change it - this works for me.
Please also know the following:
I have been playing Mechwarrior 5 exclusively (almost on a daily basis) since September 2023 and have tried optimising the game since then.
After using various sources like reddit, Steam and UE4 forums (a few links below), I ended up with a mess of an engine.ini file.
Seeing this mod for Stalker 2 I thought I would give it a try and it performed a lot better than what I had and better than the base game settings.
Sure, some parameters are for UE5 only, but some work for UE4 too. For me it made the game more stable and run more efficiently, even better than using the Xeno Optimizer series of mods.
Of course, your mileage may vary, but:
--- this is a simple engine.ini edit and it will not conflict with classic .pak mods --- you can revert the changes at any given time --- worst case scenario: you will notice no difference, but the game will be running with increased efficiency (think like 2 GPUs with the same performance, but one has less power consumption)
I tried the Stalker 2 engine.ini for about 1 week and, after a few adjustments, I asked P40L0X to port his engine.ini to Mechwarrior 5 thinking it would help the community. After looking at the Stalker 2 page at the changelogs, file comments and praise it received, I thought that a lot of care went into the creation of the mod, but this is just my opinion.
As mentioned, here are some of the links that I used throughout my 1 year of playing while trying to understand how the settings work. Some are general settings, some are for different UE games (in random order).
Some more additional notes about the Unreal Engine and what P40L0X's engine.ini does:
Unreal Engine, as far as I could understand while researching it, has notoriously bad texture loading and memory allocation which, if left unchecked / not optimised, can often lead to an unstable gaming experience (with textures / objects popping in or poorly loading and so on).
The parameters of the engine.ini help mitigate that which tends to provide a more stable experience.
Stalker 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5 and since the game's release about 2-3 weeks ago, people have complained about poor optimisations. The modders were quick to address this - you can check the amount of optimisation mods on Stalker 2's mod page here on nexus:
Mechwarrior 5 runs on the older Unreal Engine 4 (4.26 if I remember correctly, but I am not 100% sure) and still benefits from most of the parameters of the engine.ini file.
If you are the tinkering type, you can add, remove and edit more parameters yourself. :)
Again, I have been playing Mechwarrior 5 for about 1 year now and have struggled a lot with optimising it. When I downloaded the mod from Stalker 2 and saw that most things work for Mechwarrior 5 I was very happy.
I was even happier when P40L0X shared his mod with the Mechwarrior 5 community.
Thank you for this. Runs much better for me, big improvement. I use it together with xenopax optimizations, and the "MechWarrior 5 - Improved Graphical Settings v2" thread from Reddit. No problems so far.
This helped tremendously with my trash bin pc to run smoother thank you. I literally made it read only and got butter smooth fps now excluding when new units spawn in...but I'm running 60 mods so that's a yaml thing so far.
This may be a problem on my end or your latest version. I played an attack and defend mission and the game stuttered every 4-5 seconds really badly. It was almost unplayable for me. I went back to your previous version and so far so good.

The file path for the engine.ini, at least for me for the Steam version of the game is:
C:\Users\"YourUserName"\AppData\Local\MW5Mercs\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

P.S.:
If you want to disable motion blur in MW5, just add these 2 lines in [SystemSettings] section:
r.DefaultFeature.MotionBlur=0
r.MotionBlurQuality=0
Some additional notes to my already long comment:
--- make sure to read the description
--- make sure to adjust your settings according to P40L0X's comments and your hardware
