To celebrate Morrowinds 20th anniversary, I'm happy to share with you all the mods and tools I used in my Let's Play: Modded Morrowind series. To be successful in following this guide you will need at least a basic/moderate understanding of modding.
I will provide some instructions and tutorials to help you along the way but I will not be going in-depth on how to use all the programs or mods listed in this guide. That being said, if you're new to modding or don't have much experience don't worry! I'll try to be as straight forward as I can and will also provide you with as many resources as possible to help you with everything you'll need to know!
If you're new to modding and have no experience what-so-ever then CLICK HERE and watch this video by DarkElfGuy. It will cover the basic understanding of modding Morrowind like file types, modding terms such as "load order" and most of the skills you will need. The video also covers some parts I will also cover here too.
Once you know the basics of modding, the process becomes repeated so if you're new just follow the tutorials provided, take your time and you'll do just fine!
Is this guide "Lore Friendly?"
Yes. As far as I'm concerned it is. None of the mods in this guide stray far from the established lore of the game.
THIS GUIDE IS ONLY FOR THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF
THE ELDER SCROLLS III: MORROWIND - GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION!
STEAM AND RETAIL CD
THIS GUIDE IS NOT FOR OPEN-MW.
THIS GUIDE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH "MORROWIND REBIRTH".
YOU WILL NEED BOTH THE TRIBUNAL & BLOODMOON DLC!
This modlist and guide is also not 100% compatible with OpenMW. This modlist was used on the Steam version of Morrowind. Therefore if you are using OpenMW please remember that not all mods in this modlist will work for you.
(If you're already experienced in modding, you know what to do! Scroll down to the mods, download, install.)
So let's get started!
READ THE MOD DESCRIPTION!
Almost every mod comes with a "read me.txt" file when you download it, make sure you read these too. If I do not tell you how to install something, it is because the mod author will tell you!
I know, it's very tedious... But you've been warned!
Also note, some mods seen in my playthrough I have edited myself in order for them to work along side other mods. I have also compiled files from multiple mods and merged them together to create a custom version. These will both have to be done manually yourself if you want your game to look EXACTLY like mine as I do not have permission from the mod authors to reupload the edited versions I've made for my personal use.
Before we begin I suggest that you create a folder to start storing your mods in once you've downloaded them. I suggest making sub-folders in your mod storage folder to help you categorise them!
Here's an example of how I have mine set up...

So for example, if I download a mod that adds a new set of armour, I would keep my copy of that mod in the "Armour & Clothing" folder. It's good practise to keep copies of mods you download as mods sometimes get taken down or you might need a fresh install of a mod, so it's a good idea!
First things first, you'll need a few programs & tools to install mods and make sure they're ordered correctly once installed...
All mods come in either a ".RAR" or ".ZIP" format. So you will need WinRar or 7Zip so your computer can access and unpack them.
You can download them for free here:
Download WinRAR
Download 7Zip
Program For Installing Mods: Mod Organizer 2
(Yes it's from the Skyrim SE Nexus, but it works with Morrowind!)
Mod Organizer (MO) is a tool for managing mod collections of arbitrary size. It is specifically designed for people who like to experiment with mods and thus need an easy and reliable way to install and uninstall them.
MO2 will now be the main program you will use to install all of your mods. However, mlox, MGE XE, MWSE and MCP must be installed manually and NOT with MO2. This will be explained below...
The following is very important information about MO2...
Another important feature of MO2 is how you can edit ".ini" files within MO2.
What is a ".ini" file? - It's a text/configuration/settings file that comes with some mods and they are also installed with the base game (They should of been installed in the games directory when you installed Morrowind). The contents of the ".ini" file is a kind of code that controls certain aspects of the game's engine/coding.
Some mods may ask you to edit the "Morrowind.ini" or ".ini" files that come with mods.
When editing the ".ini" files be sure to do it through MO2 by clicking the yellow folder icon with the green arrow above it and clicking "Open INIs Folder" from the drop down menu.
Also, some bigger mods will come with a ".BSA" file. You may have heard them mentioned in the videos I linked above. (If you watched it, which you should of haha.) They basically contain lots of files like textures etc. Once a mod with a .BSA is installed you will need to add the .BSA to the games archive.
What does this mean?
Mods with archives (.BSA files) need to be added into the Morrowind.ini file. However, we have a tool to automate the process that can be found here.
An example for handling it manually, using my_test_mod, which has a file called "neat.BSA:"
[Archives] Archive 0=Tribunal.bsa
Archive 1=Bloodmoon.bsa
Archive 2=neat.bsa
-Excerpt from Morrowind 2020: Thastus Edition
Program To Sort Loadorder: MLOX
Mlox is a tool for analyzing and sorting your plugin load order. Alternativly, you can use LOOT. However, MLOX is more supported for Morrowind. (Please refer to DarkElfGuy's video for help with using & installing mlox)
Now you have the main programs you'll need to install mods & order them. We can move on to...
Download: Morrowind Graphics Extender (MGE XE)
Morrowind Graphics Extender XE; allows Morrowind to render distant views, scenery shadows, high quality shaders and other features.
Morrowind in vanilla has a very short view distance (thats how far you can see infront of you in-game) and puts an ugly "fog" all around the player. This was done for engine/hardware limitations at the time but isn't needed in 2021 and you want your game to look pretty, right? MGE XE will allow you to set draw distances in your game and also render objects from mods to apear in the distance among other features!
(Make sure you add mlox and MGE XE to the MO2 executables drop down menu.)
Automatic Setup of MGE XE is normally the best choice. However, if you have a slow/outdated system then you can play around with disabling settings and lowering settings in "Distant Land" until your game runs better. Don't be afraid to experiment with the settings in MGE XE!
Important Note: After installing any graphical mods, trees, towns and any mods that add objects into the game world. Make sure to run the mod through the "Distant Land" Wizard.
Mods that require this will normally state so in the mod description or "read me".
Download: Morrowind Script Extender (MWSE)
MWSE is a complete rewrite of Morrowind Script Extender, featuring new functionality and increased performance.
MWSE is a framework that many other mods will NEED in order to work.
Installation:
Prior to installing, ensure that you have the Morrowind Graphic Extender XE (MGE-XE) 0.10.0 or greater installed. MWSE v2 requires this to attach to the game. Older versions of the Morrowind Graphic Extender do not work with newer versions of MWSE.
- Download the latest zip file from the download tabs, or GitHub.
- Extract the zip file into your Morrowind installation directory.
Patches bugs in the Morrowind program, which cannot otherwise be fixed by editing scripts or data files. Cures many crash and save corruption problems.
You will want to tick every option in MCP except for:
- Racial Variation in speed fix
- Improved Animation Support
- GetSpellEffect tweak
- Spell select by name
- See all standard potion effects
- Main menu wider textures
For installation and use refer to helswake's guide for installing and setting up MCP.
The following sections below will be in order of what category of mods should be installed first. I will also do my best to list them in the order they should be installed. Make sure you've completed the above sections of this guide and made sure your Morrowind is set up correctly to begin installing mods.
You should run your game at least once and start a New Game before you continue with this guide. Should you run into any issues, remember what I said! Read the mod descriptions and the "read me" files that come with the mods. They will help ensure you install them correctly.
It's good practise to run Morrowind and start a New Game after every other Mod install. That way you will know if the Mod was installed correctly and if your game crashes after installing a new Mod, you will know it was the last Mod you installed that is most likely causing the crash.

The plugins add new armor sets for male and female NPCs, quests & more.

Texture Fix - Bloodmoon v1.1
The 'Texture Fix - Bloodmoon' mod repairs the landscape on the island of Solstheim only and requires that you have the 'Bloodmoon' expansion installed and activated on your PC.

-Graphical Mods-
Now it's time for the 'creme de la creme' of this guide! Morrowind is a beautiful game, so we're going to enhance that beauty! The following mods will overhaul almost every aspect of the graphic filidity of Morrowind!
No texture left untouched, no mesh left low poly! God rays that would make even Todd Howard cry. You get the picture!
Due to Morrowind's engine limitations the game is not very well optimized to handle a lot of Graphical Mods without taking a huge performance hit in certain areas of the game. Your computers specifications will also play a part in this.
Another thing to bare in mind is that Morrowind's engine can only utilize one core of your CPU. It is my understanding that in theory if your CPU has 8 Cores and each core runs at 4.0Ghz, then Morrowind will utilize 1 Core at a speed of 4.0Ghz. So depending on your system specifications will depend on if your setup can handle all/some of these mods and it will also dictate how much lag you will experience.
I have a decent rig that can quite happily play a very heavily modded Skyrim or Fallout 4 with 2K retextures and an ENB while still getting around 40-60 FPS. Now with the same rig and playing heavily modded Morrowind, I experience drops as low as 20 FPS in some areas of the game.
Unfortunately this cannot be avoided and is a large part of the appeal for Open-MW I imagine. So with that being said, I will provide all the mods I use in my setup but you can feel free to for-go some of them if it's causing you too much of a performance hit.
Before we begin installing the graphical mods we'll be installing a very big texture overhaul mod. The reason we're starting here is so you have a good foundation to build off. The "Morrowind Enhanced Textures" overhaul will cover pretty much every single texture in the base game and most of the DLC's (including terrain).
Upscaling them to 2-4K resolution.
If your computer hardware cannot handle the 2-4K textures, there is a 1K version avalible to download too.
With this installed first you can ensure every base texture in the game has been improved. Once this mod is installed we will be overwriting most of the textures from it with additional mods.
Morrowind Enhanced Textures (MET 4.1)
Upscales every in-game texture with the help of machine learning. 100% vanilla-friendly.

These mods replace meshes (objects & models) in Morrowind.
Install in order listed for correct overwrites.
Project Atlas
The goal of Project Atlas is to identify the most performance heavy areas of vanilla Morrowind and some popular mods and target high usage/strain meshes in those areas for atlasing. This effort involves reworking the UVs for those meshes and creating texture atlases to cover various sets.
IMPORTANT: Project Atlas is an amazing mod that merges meshes into single pieces and fixes UV errors, this greatly helps performance. However, this means that not all retexture mods will be compatible with the new Atlas meshes.
If you use a retexture mod that isn't compatible with Project Atlas you will get bugs in game where some parts of buildings like forts will have half Atlas/Vanilla textures and half retextures from the mod you installed.
Because of this you have a couple of choices...
- Decide against using Project Atlas so you can use any retexture mods you want.
- Use Project Atlas, but remember to ALWAYS check for any Atlas compatible versions of retexture mods.
I chose a third option that does require a little more experience in modding and tools such as Photoshop. What I decided to do was create conversions of any texture replaces I wanted to use that didn't support Project Atlas's new meshes. Unfortunately, I cannot provide you with downloads to these conversions I have made as I did not receive permission from the mod authors to redistribute them.
When downloading retexture mods, ALWAYS CHECK FOR PROJECT ATLAS VERSIONS!
If you decided to use Project Atlas then make sure to download the compatible textures for MET 4.1.

Download 1K or 2K depending on your needs.
Be sure to also download the "Bloodmoon Landscape Retexture" under optional files too.
Graphic Herbalism - MWSE Edition
Graphic Herbalism is an amazing mod that dynamically changes how you loot all plant life in Morrowind! In vanilla Morrowind when you try to harvest an ingredient from a plant, the game opens an inventory window. Which isn't very immersive. Plants do not have pockets. GH fixes this by making parts of the plant (buds, flower tops etc) disappear once you click on them to harvest. Making it look like you actually picked something off the plant.
Installing GH isn't as straight forward as other mods so READ THE MOD DESCRIPTION & READ ME for instructions on how to install GH correctly.
Important: Because of the way GH changes plants some mods require a patch for GH in order for them to work together. So make sure to always look for GH compatability patches when downloading any mods for that are simlar to GH or the functions/assests it changes.
I use most of Vurt's tree replacer mods, for a few reasons. I like how they look as they're lore friendly-ish and all mesh together very well. Traveling between "biomes" in Morrowind is a pretty seamless and beautiful experience when using all of Vurt's landscape mods together.
How to Install Vurt's Landscape Mods:
READ THE DECRIPTION! - I mentioned earlier how some mods need to be ran through MGE XE's Distant Land Wizard. This is one of them. Vurt explains how to do this in the mod descriptions.

Now this mod has not been packaged correctly so you need to rearrange some files once you have downloaded it so we can get the right result. I'll explain how, now, brown guar.
- Download the mod.
- Extracted it on your desktop.
- Now also extract "Alternate Skies-42629-v1.7z" to your desktop.
- Open the "New Starfields-43246-1-1" folder you just extracted to your desktop.
- Right click "tx_stars_04.dds" and rename it to "tx_stars.dds".
- Right click on "tx_stars.dds" and click Copy.
- Open the "Alternate Skies-42629-v1.7z" folder you just extracted to your desktop.
- Open the "Texture's" folder.
- Paste "tx_stars.dds" and click "Yes" to overwrite the existing file.
- Now right click the "Alternate Skies-42629-v1.7z" folder on your desktop and click "Add to archive" and click "Ok".
Now this newly created .rar archive you just created is the one you will install with MO2!
All that just for some pretty stars.

If your system can handle it. Go for it!

"..the sun's golden honey gilds the land."
Some of these mods are technical to install and set up so be sure to follow all instructions on the mod pages!
True Lights and Darkness - Necro Edit
Darkens all interior cells and increases radius of all light sources. Light and shadows become more dynamic, locations that had very little light are a lot darker now, and places where there are no light sources at all are now truly dark!
Once you have installed "TLAD Necro Edit" make sure to grab the tweak below!
Let There Be Darkness - Lua Lighting Overhaul
Configurable mod for MWSE with automatical adjustment of lighting, including override values, cell whitelist, and light object editing.
Glow in the Dahrk
This is a modern, pluginless replacement of the old Windows Glow mods with many more features besides! Windows Glow suffered from every mod needing a patch to work with it. Glow in the Dahrk handles this automatically through the meshes themselves with a powerful code by NullCascade which can switch the visible portion of meshes on the fly.
(Again, make sure to look for compatibility patches when downloading any mods related to light sources or windows.)
True Skyrimized Torches
Carryable light sources are tweaked to be equivalent to the True Torches mod for Skyrim.
The Midnight Oil - Lighting Overhaul
Toggle lights on and off. Town lights turn off during the day. Lights no longer destroyed underwater. Lanterns aren't destroyed when they run out of fuel. Refill lanterns with candles and lamps with oil.
Subtle Sunglare for Morrowind
This is a port of my Oblivion/Fallout 3 sunglare mod, made suitable for use in Morrowind! It\'s aim is to provide a realistic (and subtle) sunglare texture for the sun, and also tweak the sun\'s outline for a more natural shape.
Improved Water Shader for MGE 3_8
Improves MGE 3.8 water shader to be more realistic.
Get "ImprovedWaterShader v06b"
For installation instructions, please refer to the readme.txt file included in every zip file.

A series of mods to overhaul major cities!
There is a lot of town overhaul mods out there but I personally like the "Epic Series" by mikeandike. These mods expand the cities in question to make them visually interesting and enjoyable to explore.
(I ended up removing Epic Balmora as it adds many houses/buildings with fake doors meaning you cannot go inside them. The extra buildings just caused drops in my FPS and I couldn't justify using it when it is a bit immersion disturbing and gave me low FPS in Balmora. Try it yourself and decide. Because of this I use Kilcunda's Balmora.)

Julan Ashlander Companion
This is a companion/quest mod. It started because the Morrowind Main Quest can be a lonely business. I wanted to create a companion who actually "knew" what was going on, had their own opinions and agenda concerning it, and would be interesting company on the journey. I also wanted to give a new perspective and approach to the Main Quest for those veteran players like myself who know it backwards, but still enjoy playing Morrowind.
Julan Kaushibael is a young Ashlander man you rescue from getting pasted by Daedra outside Ghostgate. He wants you to take him on as a companion in order to train him into becoming a better warrior, but it quickly becomes clear that there is something going on that he isn't telling you. As you progress through the Morrowind main quest with Julan, he gets dragged into your mission, and you get dragged into his - a tangle of secrets, lies, love, loss and betrayal.
