For those having crashing issues. It's because of AVX2. If your cpu allows any other one go with that one. Delete the AVX2 dll and the pdp file in the NVHR folder inside your mod folder. When you boot the game. It will say something about AVX2 not being found. That's fine. It will choose the next best one.
I can confirm this worked for me. Before I was getting random crashes every 20 minutes. With this recommended tweak, I get no more crashes. Thanks for sharing! now I can use this mod which really speeds up my item menu.
I saw Josh's comment before I tested this, even timing it just to see if I would have similar results, and, lo and behold! exACTLY 20 mins in to the second, my game began to lock up, froze a couple times before a freezecrash.
Tested twice, the second time I traveled through a different side of the map. Same thing.
Someone by the name of Slatko in the comments said that Viva New Vegas has removed this mod and that the latest version of NVSE increases the heapsize to 500 so this mod is now indeed redundant. I also agree with them that this mod doesn't work well with DXVK and I don't believe it ever has. I can't speak for NVR since I don't use it.
This is what chatgbt told me about using this mod can someone tell me if chatgbt is correct? 📦 What is New Vegas Heap Replacer?New Vegas Heap Replacer is a mod that modifies how the game handles memory allocation, specifically the heap, to:
📈 Improve stability
🧠 Prevent crashes due to memory fragmentation
🔄 Replace the default heap algorithm with a custom one for better performance
Back in the day (around 2021–2022), it was a popular workaround to help reduce CTDs (crashes to desktop), especially for large mod setups like Tale of Two Wastelands.🔍 So why is it not recommended anymore? In recent years, modding tools and mods like:
NVTF (New Vegas Tick Fix)
xNVSE, JIP LN, JohnnyGuitar, Stewie Tweaks
Better INI management (like the ones you’re already doing!)
…have made Heap Replacer mostly obsolete. TTW and modern stability mods already solve the problems Heap Replacer was designed to fix — and in a more compatible way.In fact, using Heap Replacer now can:⚠️ Conflict with NVTF ⚠️ Break memory patching already done by updated mod tools ⚠️ Cause more problems than it solves in a 2025 loadout✅ VerdictDon’t install Heap Replacer — it’s outdated and no longer needed in modern TTW builds. The official 2025 TTW guide is correct to leave it out.
This completely breaks my game if I use it with New Vegas Reloaded (despite the latest version claiming they work together). I was getting crashes everytime I exited a building. Now have to choose between the game looking pretty or optimized lol. For now tweaked NVSE ini to have the heapsize to 496.
My personal experience is that NVHR works fine with New Vegas Reloaded.
It has incompatibility with DXVK though, in that you have to choose one or the other. So if you are using NVHR and DXVK, you have to pick one: DXVK or NVHR.
I kept DXVK because I like the performance boost and HDR support. Once I removed NVHR the crashes I was getting every few minutes vanished. I can play for hours now with DXVK + New Vegas Reloaded (Helios preset) without issue.
I have an RX 7600, and I followed the VNV and Wall_SoGB's performance guides. My game has been running perfectly with dxvk since I uninstalled NVHR. When I had NVHR installed, I was getting CTDs every 10 minutes at most. Has this updated version of JIP fixed the issue (is it the version that's on Nexus)? I'd like to try out the "improvements" that NVHR offers.
Thank god you posted this. Tried literally everything imaginable - game would either crash or stutter like crazy. Changed inlinefunction to 0, no more stuttering, and no more crashes.
Completely remove NVHR, then change the NVSE ini to:
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB = 496
This mimics the functionality of this mod without having to deal with 1 million crashes. If someone knows of a better method/plugin, please do let me know.
I want to update everyone that the Viva New Vegas guide has removed this mod, and the latest NVSE already increases the heapsize to 500. So this mod is officially redundant now at best and messy at worst. And in further testing I am 100% sure it does not play nice if you have DVXK and NVR installed. My advice is to skip it, you are already getting its minimal performance gains with the latest NVSE.
For some reason the author did not include the cpu scan in the NVHR folder like in every tutorial I found and because of that I am hardlocked when installing TTW. What gives?
How do I uninstall this mod guys? If I go in and delete the files it adds, it just tells me when I try to launch the game that I'm missing NHR files and adds them back in, even though the mod has no files currently in my root folder. I'm at my wits end, it's like reinstalling itself when I'm purposefully trying to get rid of it so I can use DXVK.
Just putting it out there, this mod has worked perfectly fine for me, i'm using it together with DXVK and iStewie's engine optimisations too, they touch completely different areas of code so idk where people got the idea that they aren't compatible. Made it through a whole playthrough with all DLC's with only a few crashes (usually after long sessions of playing)
For anyone who's had issues, i really recommend giving it another try and thoroughly reading through the installation instructions, making sure your nvse is up to date, that the right settings in NVTF are enabled and that you don't have NVSR installed because this mod is absolutely worth it

Congratulations. No more crashes.

Chaz's fix worked for me too. :)
My ini files ware not included such a key name.
THIS is what fixed it, compatible with all the bells and whistle, truly a 10/10
