This mod primarily serves to do three things:
- An Upgradable version of the original Stealth Armor through a craftable recipe.
- Stealth Field functionality.
- Night Vision functionality. (Optional)
It gives players an attainable lategame Stealth Suit that truly deserves the title of one, it has the functionality of a permanent Stealth Boy, but isn't too overpowered as to be broken due to conditions that can affect its uses.
Now what do I mean by that?
This is to simulate the fact that in low alertness situation, nobody is going to be actively looking for an invisible person, making it way easier for you to sneak past unsuspecting guards. But when the gig is up, and they know you're here, you'll find your stealth field isn't as effective when the person is looking for any sign of you, noise, touch, and distorted light in the shape of a silhouette included. (This manifests in the form of +5 Stealth Field instead of +75)
But if you really want the full effects of the Stealth Boy(Sneaking +100 included), not to worry.
Should you have the Silent Running perk, you will truly become "Invisible". Before hand, you still have the potential to be discovered despite your invisibility, you still make noises when you move, maybe accidentally kicked a loose gravel here, or step on a creaky floorboard there... point is they'll hear you.
But with Silent Running, they dont just cant see you, but cant hear you either. You're so skilled in the art of stealth that you're above such petty mistakes, and move completely without noise. When paired with the Hei Gui Stealth Armor, this perk truly shines, rightfully giving you the +100 Sneaking you so desired.
The visor of the CSA always intrigued me, so I figured that if it offered no special optics it'd be a crime!
I've also finally decided that it may not be too crazy to give it +1 PER, after all it does have a pretty advanced visor, but it's nowhere as advanced as the ones used by Riot Gear.
As for the crafting side...
Yes, you are in possession of really important information on the Chinese' greatest asset throughout the Sino-American War. Would it have made sense that a dying Hei Gui commando would write down such important info on how his suit worked? Probably not, but I justify it given the circumstances he found himself in.
The US Government never bothered to clear sub-level S1C due to the number of BOWs that escaped and roamed the facility. If any Hei Gui commando ended up surviving for a long period of time, they might decide to find a way to properly escape the facility unnoticed. And if their suit was damaged, they might decide to perform maintenance and repairs on it using the materials available throughout the facility.
Regardless of how believable it is, said repair log can be found in a container in the same room as the original Stealth Suits.
This is the Workbench recipe (requires 90 Science) :
[Proto-Hei Gui Design]
- 1x Chinese Stealth Armor
- 1x Recon Helmet
- 1x Recon Armor
- 1x Fission Battery
- 1x Microfusion Cell
- 1x Wonderglue
- 5x Stealth Boys
- 5x Scrap Electronics
An overview of the Hei Gui Stealth Armor's effects:
[Hei Gui Stealth Suit]
- Toggleable Nightvision mode using the Pipboy Light key.
- [PER +1, AGL +1, Sneak +15, Rad Resist +20%]
- [+75 Stealth Field] when sneaking.
- Now includes the StealthBoy activation sound to notify the user if the Stealth Field is working.
Dynamic Effects:
*The core interactions revolves around keeping your Suit's condition above 25, failing to do so will result in most of the suit's functions failing.
*I've touched upon some of these interactions above like being detected or having the Silent Running Perk.
*I justify Light Touch giving you +1 bonus AGL due to its unique nature as a Repair Perk for Light Armor, the idea is that you'd further improve the suit's design by adding modifications only a specialist like yourself would make.
*Silent Running is self explanatory but in addition to +100 Sneak, it'll also be responsible for making you sneak faster.
*I always felt like Lily's left out despite being the companion thematically best suited to this, so I added in the perfect interaction for her.
*Lily will now improve the effectiveness of your Stealth Field so that even when you're in combat or detected, it'll still remain as effective as a normal stealthboy, staying at +75 Stealth Field.
*I went with this since Lily's perk mainly improves the duration of your Stealth Boy.
[Caution]/[Danger]:
- [+5 Stealth Field] instead of +75.
- Nightvision and Stealth Field fails functionality
- Suit no longer gives +1 PER bonus.
- You gain an additional bonus +1 AGL while above 25 Clothing Condition.
- [Sneak +100] instead of +15 when Stealth Field is active, and your movement speed is faster while sneaking.
- [+75 Stealth Field] even during [Caution]/[Danger].
Installation
You can use a mod manager or just install it into your game's root directory.
There is now an optional version of the file where there's no Nightvision, use that if the NV annoys you or you have your own way of implementing Nightvision.
I've also made artwork based on MuteSignal's model that replaces the suit's pipboy icon, I only really bothered to make one for female couriers so it'll only show for female couriers. I think? I dont know didn't bothered to check.
Anyway, you can find those in the Optional Files section, enjoy!
Do not install both the main file and optional files together!
If you want to modify the Hei Gui Stealth Suit:
While they may share the same paths for texture and model, if you wish to differentiate the two as I personally had, you can simply use FNVEdit or GECK to change the model and texture paths in the mod to the one replacing it.
Don't worry, I've even included a separate BIPL(Biped Model List) so you can change both the gloves and headgear individually.
You can find the relevant files under '- Armor Addon' and '- FormID List'.
I personally use MuteSignal's Improved T6M Stealth Armor Resource to differentiate this and the original CSA for female models.
Usually Mute's helmet.dds textures wont apply on the model unless you have the T6M Equipment Replacer NV.esm active in your load order, but through manipulating the texture paths in the Armor Addon section for the Helmet, and applying it to the custom Biped Model List, the textures worked perfectly.
Author's Note:
While looking through mods that could restore stealth field functionality to the CSA, I found quite a surprising number of which, but only two of them drew my attention.
In one, it restores everything you'd expect. It gives the NV CSA +15 Stealth again, and a functional +5 Stealth Field when sneaking.
This was DorostheConqueror's Chinese Stealth Armor - Stealth Field Fix mod.
On top of that, it also gives you the option to install a custom lore friendly and immersive recipe located near the original Stealth Suits.
So if you thought the CSA were too easy of a win, especially given the state you found them in, you could just repair them back up.
BUT
No matter how I looked at it, I could never feel like the requirement and effort needed to fix the CSA was justified given the lackluster
stats of the finished product.
And in part motivated by my desire to have a CSA that have Nightvision functionality, I was driven to find others.
Eventually, I came across another, it had amazing features like toggleable NV, or a stealth field that ceases to be powered
should your armor Condition fall past a certain threshold.
This one was known as Advanced Fix Chinese Stealth Armor by artguk, and it was advanced alright.
All in all it sounded pretty good... Except for the fact that everything about it was incredibly overpowered.
100 Sneaking and 100 Stealth Field right off the bat, + 75% Disguise(whatever that means).
Modding New Vegas has led me to learn FNVEdit and some basic understanding of how New Vegas' files work.
So I got to thinking, why dont I just make my own version?
This was largely possible thanks to the modding efforts of Doros and artguk whom I took heavy inspiration(and copied modding methods) from.
- Without Doros there wouldn't be a functional Recipe system to get and learn from.
- Without artguk, I wouldn't know how to make functional Nightvision.
I just combined the two, and added my own flair and preferences into it.
