For anyone looking for the xLODGen instructions, wastelandsurvivalguide.com seems to be down but I backed it up.
Before getting started, there are a few things you should know. First, generating LOD is not a requirement, but it will add detail in the distance thanks to the mod linked below. It becomes a requirement for proper visuals if you installed texture mods (such as NMCs or Poco Bueno) or are using a mod that requires LOD to be generated (like MoreMojave). Terrain LOD creates a much larger file size (+500mb) and potential performance loss for a very minimal visual improvement. Therefore, this guide will focus only on generating object LOD with xLODGen. If you need to generate xLODGen terrain LOD for whatever reason, the instructions will be the exact same except you will need to enable Terrain LOD option in addition to the Object LOD option.
Installing xLODGen
- Download the latest xLODGen file from here (older backup) or here (updated). - Once the download has finished, extract the contents of the archive to any location of your choice. - In MO2, select the button at the top of MO2 to open the executables menu. - Click the + at the top of the window and the select Add from file... - From the pop-up, navigate to where xLODGen is installed and select xLODGen.exe. - In the Arguments box in the right pane, enter: -FNV -O:"C:\Output\"
Running xLODGen
- Select xLODGen from the executables drop-down in the top right of MO2 and click Run. - Once the program has loaded, right-click in the left pane and click Select All. - In the right pane, check Objects LOD but leave Trees LOD unchecked. (Tree LOD is not functional in New Vegas. LOD for trees is covered in Object LOD.) - Under the Objects LOD section, change the Atlas size option to 8192 x 8192. - Select Generate. - Wait for the message LOD Generator: finished (you can close this application now) to appear (Generation time depends on your CPU performance), then close out of the program. - In MO2, right-click on the Overwrite folder at the bottom of the left pane and select All Mods -> Create empty mod above. - Title the mod FNVLODGen Output. - Navigate to where the LOD files were generated and select both the textures and meshes folders. - Cut them to the FNVLODGen Output mod you just created (right-click on the mod and select Open in Explorer).
Just an FYI, Much Needed LOD is not recommended for TTW. If you do not believe me, here is a quote from Roy Batty in the TTW Discord earlier this month (December 2022): "lod additions and improvements only...much needed LOD is f*#@ing terribad..."
Yes, updaeted the file to remove Much Needed LOD records. Also updated the instructions to reflect the same. You can use the latest file but be sure to regenerate the LOD
What exactly makes it "terribad", did he offer any reasoning. No disrespect to Roy/TTW team, but I have heard of people mention his bias towards certain things within Fallout New Vegas modding that aren't even a problem, so I'm less reluctant to believe what he says with no real reasoning besides it being "terribad".
Perhaps some of the meshes aren't the most optimized? There are meshes for some smaller rocks that are maybe unnecessary and will cause 3 or 4 cells (in vanilla New Vegas) to go above the max vertice count and throw some errors when generated. I've been using Much Needed LOD for a long while without issue and enjoy the extra stuff in the distance. In my own personal experience I haven't noticed any performance hit from LOD. I'm not an expert by any means, but in my opinion/experience it's fine.
Yeah having an explanation of "terribad" isn't helpful at all and comes off as a childish way to dissuade someone. What zedas said makes more sense. However, as he pointed out, he also hasn't had any problems when using Much Need LOD either.
Roybatty may have a surly attitude at times, but there are less than a handful of people in the world who understand FNV's weaknesses and outright problems better than him. Not to mention the additional strains placed on it with TTW! Ignore his advice at your own risk!
Hello Rockslide57, Thank you for your kind words. However, I must remind you that I've simply made a compatibilty plugin. All credits for the actual LOD i.e. meshes & textures goes to tomzik & Tecium. They've done the much harder work
imagine replying like a robot. you're like this: Hello Username123456789, Thank you for kind words. But look at me. I'm ameyngangal An stpid modder who doesn't have a pfp And I reply like a Robot.

Your guide is a f*#@ing headache... Just copy and paste the text from the guides in the order you need them in. None of this other site bullshit that makes the structure so f*#@ing confusing.
the guide is extremely simple actually and the only off site thing he linked was the wasteland survival guide. Modders don't need to baby-explain how to generate lod when that guide is the easiest and most popular explanation. the only thing he said not to follow there was to download the resources because the TTW install already includes them, and it isn't a guide specifically for TTW.
Yeah it's even funnier now cuz the link is now not working idk if xlodgen even loaded his file it's just doing it. As a modder I too say this was a stupid thing to do.
So post LOD generation one of my developers noticed that certain Billboards in addition to other miscellaneous textures were referring to the alternate texture and breaking the mesh (Causing red triangle essentially). Not sure if this has been fixed in the most recent update but thought I would say something, thank you for your continued work.
Edit: Simple issue created by the user enabling it it looks like with the LODs already generated

Updated the plugin to remove all instances of records from "Much Needed LOD".
Also, updated the description to reflect the same.
Please download and use the latest version (1.1) and regenerate the LOD as mentioned in step 4 of the description.
