Wouldn't HEVC or even AV1 be better? Half or less the size at the same image-quality? Works on anime, for example. 600MB AV1 has better quality than 1.5GB x264.
Won't know for sure unless you (or somebody else) tests it. However, being 4 years apart, it makes sense to assume that more recent upscaling (i.e. this mod) is a higher quality (as long as the settings and tuning was done correctly)
Before I try this new mod, could you answer or test if in your mod the subtitles are played? The other ones did not so I reverted back to original video files, kind regards.
I've been playing the game and I've seen subtitles on all the videos, and I've been bouncing back and forth between the 1440p and 2160p videos (for testing purposes) by having two installs of the game. Just as a sanity check I played the intro and yes subtitles are showing during movies (https://i.imgur.com/7TK6m1m.png). I wonder what would cause them to not play on other releases as I didn't do anything special.
What's the difference between turning on LodMod on NAMH and installing it directly on https://www.nexusmods.com/nierautomata/mods/165 ? Can I use both of them together?
I never used NAMH but I assume that if it installs LodMod then you don't need to download it manually. As long as it's present should be all that matters.
I think the only other mod with H.264 videos is this one and only in 2160p. I was having some issues with them, when previewing in Sofdec2Viewer they play twice as fast as they should (18 second video is over in 9 seconds). I can't remember if this was the case when they played in-game, but I do remember having some pretty bad audio desync issues so that could be why. One of the videos ended before the conversation was finished. These issues, along with no available 1080p/1440p videos in H.264 is what inspired me to try and figure out how to create new movies in the proper format. As stated in the description, these may also suffer some slight desync issues but nothing too bad. I only seen it once so far in one of the movies but I was also encoding at the same time so my system resources were maxed out. After some more testing and seeing how they play out if it turns out there's anything severe I'll try to reencode with different settings.
