In case anyone was wondering (but even if they weren't), this exists too and works better: just be sure to only activate the .esp after exiting the tutorial sewers (and maybe deactivate it once you are done)
For those who are here looking for a way to alter their appearance without resetting their stats, it's possible without the use of mods. Simply follow these instructions:
1. Save your game (because this is a Bethesda game, so always save before doing anything!) 2. Open the race menu using console command 'openracemenu' 3. Make any changes but DO NOT close the race menu. I repeat, DO NOT CLOSE THE RACE MENU. 4. Press escape and save your game and then quit WITHOUT CLOSING THE RACE MENU. 5. Restart the game and load the save you just created. 6. Enjoy your game with your desired changes, wondering why Bethesda didn't by default even allow you to change your hairstyle without screwing your character progression.
I can't claim credit for figuring this out, I just found it on a forum.
Thank you so much for this! I always dreading finding a great race mod because it meant I had to start over to use them. This method is great, but for the record you don't have to exit the game after saving. You can just load the save you created immediately while the pause menu is still up after saving. Works great, as I have used this method mid-playthrough on my own character.
What a shame, there is no "openracemenu" and even if you tried to do that with "showracemenu"; the Save option in the menu is greyed out. Its not like when doing this with "showclassmenu" which actually gives the option to save without exiting the menu. I love the modding community here, but I actually despise mod clutter. I'm a minimalist. This mod is better off being deleted than just allowed to take up a slot in the loader. The Base ID for the is ##000ED4, in case anyone was wondering. Having to fetch it is pretty rude. Not sure why so many mods come without courtesy Read Me.txt with instructions and references.
By the way, this mod actually wipes your level progress. It does prevent the attribute/skill reversal from "showracemenu", which saves anyone the time of reversing it.
I seem to have the odd glitch where, when I use the amulet, it sets my carry capacity to 0, leaving me over encumbered permanently. Unsure why, but I have yet to find a fix.
3 years later. Answer in 2015. LOGIC. But the difference between this mod and showracemenu is that showracemenu resets the skills, but this mod doesn't.
The year is 2023. Managed to make a cute looking argonian but there is some minor changes I want to make. Opening showracemenu is sketchy and hoping this mod will do the trick
I don't know if it's this mod or this mod with one of the many others I have installed, but every time i use the amulet to change race (and I'm just changing my character's face/hair not actually changing his race) I end up with the birth sign (Thief) added again. After several face/hair tweaks my character now has 90 Luck, and should only have 60. I equipped the amulet, chose change race, made no changes but clicked Done, and poof! had 100 luck, 90 agility, and 95 speed.

To anyone still experiencing this problem, this mod seems to add the birth sign stat bonuses (willpower, agility, speed etc.) to your character every time you use the amulet to change your race. It will remove a stat bonus you gained if you change your birth sign however. e.g the mage birth sign adds 10 willpower and 30 Magicka to your character. Changing to the Ritual birth sign will remove the bonus 10 willpower points and the 30 Magicka from your character.
If you wish to edit your characters race or face/hair, but don't want to inflate your stats by having the birth sign stat bonus add to your character every time you edit, simply change your birth sign to one that does not have any stat bonuses (i.e the Lord, the Ritual etc.) first. Then make your character changes, then change your birth sign back to whatever it was you used initially. This will result in no net change to your stats.
Thank you for an awesome mod! It helps me a lot! Endorsed Yes, this mod drops main skills progression, but it is better than showracemenu which drops all main skills stats to defaults...
The mod worked in that I was able to find the amulet and put it on, but when I select change race it crashes to desktop.Any idea what could be causing this?
I had the same problem and I moved the Character Change Amulet esp to second from last in my load order and it is now working fine, so I am guessing that there is likely a another mod that you have loaded that the Character Change Amulet esp needs to be loaded after. Also I used Boss and Loot and neither solved the issue for me.

But anybody can use "~ showracemenu" for the very same purpose...

And yea, very useful mod, especially for changing classes mid-game. Changing back the skills manually was so annoying.
