i don't recommend using this unless you know exactly what you're doing or if someone anywhere online has clear instructions on how to install it and get it working. as of right now, no readily searchable instructions exist anywhere online that are clear enough to understand for a layperson like myself. the instructions in the readme and description are extremely unclear.
so yeah! your game will probably run fine without it if you're not using a lot of mods!!! please skip this if you're new to modding :)
if there does happen to be anywhere with CLEAR step-by-step instructions *that are confirmed to work*, i'd be happy to recommend this. but every varied attempt i made, using still-unclear directions provided by other well-meaning people online, on several fresh installs, have caused CTDs on the bethesda logo every time. i welcome any and all flaming telling me how wrong i am because at least maybe then i'll have some instructions i can use, thank you!
Not my intent to flame anyone, but this is objectively terrible advice and that needs to be pointed out by people with knowledge so that new modders do not get misled. I've been modding games since at least 2010, probably before. I started out modding this very game and have also modded lots of other older titles like FO3 and the original Dragon Age. In all of these older games the FIRST thing you should do is update the exe to be large address aware. Why? Firstly, this will make your game FAR more stable period. You are looking here at games which are pressing up against the limits of what their engine is capable. That means even with an unmodded game, patching the exe will result in more stability and fewer crashes. A good example of this is the city of Denerim in Dragon Age which can cause ctds during loading without this fix even when unmodded. Of course when you start adding mods, the fix becomes absolutely essential. It is also not complicated. In every instance, you literally just place it in the main folder and run the exe. This means it is absolutely something that those new to modding can/should do and your telling new modders to skip this on the grounds of complexity is honestly a bit baffling.
tl;dr you absolutely should not skip this mod, even if you are new to modding. it is simple to use and will result in greater stability even in an unmodded set up.
Because instructions tell you should patch all .exe and .dll oblivion files. This is extremely unclear and irresponsible to tell people, most of which are probably beginners.
pacolovacmaddsc17 its not unclear and irresponsible, its literally word for word what you are supposed to do. your looking for more information that doesnt exist, just admit you eat to many rocks to understand dude no need for an entire temper tantrum due to your own lack of understanding, also the patcher itself makes a backup of every file it patches so there's legitimately nothing being lost in anyway shape or form. if it doesn't work you just use the backup files instead and your set
Naruhinexis then what .dll files are named to be patched? Please show me, and everyone else who read the readme word for word.
For 64 bit Windows Operating Systems (e.g. Windows 7 or 8 64 bit) with 4gb+ ram 1st.) Use the 4gb utility downloaded here to apply the LAA patch to all .exe and .dll related to oblivion. You just open the program and select which files to patch. The program makes backups of the original files automatically (with a ".Backup" file type you simply remove to overwrite the patched file if need be). This allows them to use greater than the default theoretically limit of 2gb. 4gb per process patched tops (less in practice). 2nd.) Force Oblivion to make use of this extra ram with additional tweaks. Such as enabling a more efficient heap with OSR, etc... etc... etc... More to come...
Point to where the instructions CLEARLY say which files need to be patched in regards to the .dll's. WHICH ONES. I want NAMES. Not "guess which ones and try it out over and over until it works".
IKR. . like first response is "duh, just ptche the EXE how dumb are you?
meanwhile the instructsion say patch ALL exes AND ALL dlls.
so which is it?
patch 1 file or 10 files? this is not clear instructions AT ALL. and then i pull up a YT vid and the vid just says to patch the 1 file.
so if we only need to patch the one file, why do the instructions say to patch multiple files?
how TF is "to patch the one file, patch the multiple files, by patching 1 file and selecting multiple files but not multiple files just the one file multiple non singular multiple plural single multiple files. got it dummy?" how TF is that clear?
Okay for real now. This patcher has been around the Internet since 2007. It wasn't designed for Oblivion exclusively and all official documentation (if you want to call the 2 paragraph description that) mentions patching 32bit exe files to use more than 2GB of RAM. You double click the patcher, you select the exe of the thing you want to patch. If it's a game we're talking about you patch the exe used to launch the game. It's okay if you don't understand something and need additional information. I, personally, in my very own opinion, think it's not okay to give recommendations based on that lack of understanding. That was what made me comment in that tone at first. I could've worded it better, or even include the usual google if you don't know it. I just wrote a 1 sentence instruction on how to use it and added a rhetorical question because I didn't feel like writing 1k characters comment that day or something.
Please note: There's no need to run this patch on GOG versions of the game, as it comes pre-patched.
For those confused about where to put this, you don't "install" it, at all. (It shouldn't even be available as a "download to mod manager" option.)
1. Download the file manually to wherever you typically download non-Oblivion files. 2. Extract the file wherever you like. I'd just extract it to a folder in the Windows "Downloads" directory, because you'll probably be deleting it, soon. 3. Double-click the 4gb patch.exe file. A User Account Control dialog should pop up, but we meant to launch this, so click OK. 4. It should open to the game location by default (something ending in ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion). You're looking for the root folder, here (the one that has Oblivion.exe in it), NOT the Data subfolder. 5. Select Oblivion.exe and click Open. You should see a dialog saying "Executable successfully patched!" 6. Either close the window or click the Another File button. 7. Launch 4gb patch.exe, again (or click the Another File button in the previous step), and select OblivionLauncher.exe. 8. If you have the Construction Set installed, launch 4gb patch.exe a third time and select TESConstructionSet.exe. 9. You're all done. You can close the 4gb patch and delete the archive you just downloaded. 10. Run the game as normal.
patching the launcher works, trying to patch the oblivion.exe doesn't work - couldn't open executable.
I can cut/copy the exe file to another location, then the patching will work. however once I put the patched exe back into the game folder steam won't launch the game anymore, I get errors.
*EDIT* Turns out oblivion.exe was still open in the back ground. Opened task manager and found it there, then End Process Tree. Tried again and it worked thought id edit the post if anyone is experiencing this issue
Thank you very much. This should be pinned or put in the actual description. My game was crashing at launch cuz I just hit "Install with NMM". Slightly misleading, but still a godsend of a mod.
You just need to apply it to Oblivion.exe What you are doing is setting a flag in the main executable to let it take advantage of extra memory space. Otherwise it is by default limited to only the first 2 GB, with the upper 2GB reserved for the system. The DLLs have nothing to say about it. And the launcher won't ever need any extra memory, it is only there to pass control to Oblivion.exe
I did the Oblivion.exe and OblivionLauncher.exe. Someone else says no need to do the OblivionLauncher.exe but does it really matter if we do? Patching the last one didn't override the patch on the Oblivion.exe right?
yo thank you i had read the read me file and found nothing about the Installation steps and got really confused of it. Then i decided after i found nothing on youtube about the installation steps to look in the comments and the finally found your comment. I just wanted to say thank you about the detailed Installation steps now my game runs smoothly thanks.
I'm having issues with oblivion crashing when i go through doors. I researched whats causing the error in event view and it seems to be an accessing memory error. Ive downloaded and applied the patch and the problem persists. Does anyone have any recommendations of what i should do. I just got back into the game and i really want to pick up where I left off.
if you're still having the "coudn't open executable", even after checking if Oblivion.exe was running, it may be that the exe is set to "read only". I disabled read only on Oblivion.exe and I was able to patch it that way.
Would I be able to run this on the executables on my PC install, then copy those over and replace the ones on my Steam Deck install to get it to work there?
I would assume that should work? I might try that myself since the only way I got my mods to work on Steam Deck, except NorthernUI Wheel Hotkeys, was to copy my install files on Windows 10 directly to their equivalent locations on Steam Deck, then follow a few extra steps.
I'm seeing most clarifying posts mention you only need to apply the patcher to Oblivion.exe, so I assume if you have a PC, you can do that, copy that file to a flash drive, and move it into the correct folder on the Steam Deck. Though I have seen a handful of comments here saying to also patch obseloader.exe and OblivionLauncher.exe, so I'm not sure which.
just FYI this also worked to patch Halo Combat Evolved PC and got me around the errors i was getting "map memory buffers require a large address aware patched executable"
Hi! Just like the NVSE 4GB Patch, I was wondering if it were possible to release a version compatible with Linux users? Users of the Steam Deck would benefit greatly.
Totally strange, if you dont know what you are doing, dont install the mod!!! I installed it via vortex. After that my game hat the stutter bug. Pain in the buttt
Hello. i have a simple question, because i think i see something like this about Fallout New Vegas. A mod like this, give a virtual 4 GB Ram, like windows use some giga bytes of the hard disk, for memory if needed ? Did the most of PC and Laptops, today, have, 8 or 16 --or more-- memory ? if a mod said, it need a mod like this, do we put it at the load order of a mod manager, or continue to play the game ? ---And finally, i read somewhere that Oblivion quests don't mark locations to the map, and we need to find where to go. I don't think this is a good think, or help people play this game. That's all. Thanks.
Yes. Sorry. Still don't get it. i am going to play for the first time Oblivion and maybe Fallout New Vegas, so i think this is a old method, helps old PC systems, so i don't need it ? That's all.
No. You absolutely need this patch if you want mods. Otherwise, forget modding. You need these for both New Vegas and Oblivion. These don't run your games at 4GB, they raise the vanilla game's RAM so it can run the mods you add.
Basically, without this patch, Oblivion will crash more often. With the patch, you will be able to play Oblivion longer before it crashes. You can never completely eliminate the crashes in Oblivion. It's something we have to deal with.
So, i play Oblivion for hours, never use that patch, and don't crash not 1 time. Fallout New Vegas also don't need it, even some mods, overhaul the terrain outside the main house and add new buildings, cause problems. Well, we can't have it, all, right ? i ...admire some mod authors, don't care if their mod, cause problems, so i need to add, the first time, to the load order for Fallout New Vegas, 5, check if the game show the menu, to start a new game, load a game and so on, and then, add 5 more new mods. And really, some mods for FNV, yes, don't show that menu or crash the game. That's all.
So we need to run this mod on oblivion.exe and OblivionLauncher.exe. But the mod also states to run it on DLLs. Which DLLs do we need to run the patcher on? Do we also need to run this on obse_loader.exe?

Wow that's really good information. I delivered this information to other user on Nexusmods.com. He was experiencing the same problem for Fallout 3
Yet here, you say only to apply the patch to Oblivion.exe and OblivionLauncher.exe.
Do we apply it to all .exe's and all .dll's found in ../Oblivion? Should we also apply it to the OBSE .dll's and .exe's found in the same folder?
