    Hi Dispensation,

I wanted to thank you so much for this mod guide! I played through Oblivion again in 2023 for the first time since my childhood using it. This guide helped to make it an equally magical experience as my first time playing the game. With the remake out now, I realize that might be my last time playing though of the OG game. So, thank you! Hope to see more of more of your work for the remastered edition if the stars so align. :)

Hi, does anyone know of a guide to install Oblivion with Vortex? That is the mod installation program that I use. Also for mods that have OMOD installers I am using OBMM. The loading order is done with LOOT and to clean mods I use Test4Edit. My computer is old, with a Core 2 Duo 2.4GHZ processor, 8Gb of Ram and my video card is Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS of 512MB, WIN10pro x64

My suggestion: just learn how to use WyreBash or MO2. Vortex is a pain in the backside.

how exactly is vortex a pain for oblivion? i see collections on it already and ive had no issues over the years using vortex for skyrim falloout 4 3 and new vegas so what exactly makes it so bad for oblivion?

@BluePhoenix0120 Many (mainly older) Oblivion mods are packaged in a way that only Wrye Bash or MO2 can handle. Vortex was not built with them in mind.

how old are we talking? like 2014? or older like 2009? because most of the mods i want to use currently are 2014 and newer or have updated recently  im not trying to use a bunch of overhauls yet per say just trying to add some quality of life and better graphics to the game for my first play through based on the little ive already played and would like to change. like adding more alchemy ingridents from daggerfall morrowwind and skyrim  and the unnofical patches

Honestly, Vortex just sucks in general. I use MO2 for newer games, but I might just switch to Wrye Bash for all Bethesda games. The ability to easily manipulate individual files makes Wrye Bash way more convenient. You can actually troubleshoot and make small adjustments that Vortex (and MO2 to an extent) doesn't allow.

It's 2025, I've spent 3 days modding Oblivion, deleting and re downloading Oblivion because of game breaking mods - My suggestions are - Don't download ORC, download Qarls Redimized Textures instead of any other texture packs, no Darnified UI just get Northern UI Vanilla and Don't mess with NPC or Your Looks, the game looks fine just as it is, you get used to it quickly. Any mod can be a game breaking mod in Oblivion and many mods have mods of their own meant to fix them, read descriptions properly and download unnecessary stuff on a modding addiction.

Use ORC 193 with the ROTS preset, Qarl is not a bad texture pack, but using it by itself is pretty suboptimal, DarNified UI is superior over NorthernUIAway unless you use MajorJims Northern UI Edition. OCOv2 is good, lol.

"Intended for the new player modding for the first time and also those seeking mods to use."

While this guide does start out easy to follow for a beginner, it begins to have parts that seem to assume the reader knows where things are. Where I myself eventually got lost was when it says "Go to Tweak Actors..." has stuff that sound like it would be good to do, but don't know what or where Tweak Actors is.

Also, had the problem DreamCorp did. Tried Can12's solution, but there is no Oblivion folder in the indicated directory.

Deleting all files including Oblivion, and reinstalling Oblivion only. Then, maybe i'll try the basics and not all that way extra stuff.

The Oblivion .ini should be located here:
C:\Users\<your username>\Documents\My Games\Oblivion (the .ini should be generated by default when you start the game from the launcher)

While it can seem confusing at times, you should be able to do every part of the guide by following the instructions to the letter. Make sure to use Wrye Bash. It may seem a little intimidating, but it will actually be much less of a headache over time. MO2 and Vortex make troubleshooting and customization far more difficult.

The most important thing is perseverance and patience. It takes time to get used to the process and the software, and once you get the hang of it, it will still take forever. It's not hard; just incredibly tedious.

did the first 3 sections and game just crashes on boot. Black screen for 1 second then nothing. i guess since the guide is outdated it doesn't work anymore to use this and you're kinda SOL i guess for troubleshooting anything. 0/10 guide

Delete your Oblivion.ini file from "Documents\My Games\Oblivion", launch the Oblivion launcher to generate a default Oblivion.ini file, launch the game through obse_loader once, then redo your BethINI settings. You can then continue following the guide from where you left off.

Hey, thanks for the amazing guide! Can I seek some clarity on updating BCF's for files that have been updated but don't have their older version that the BCF compilation was made for. In my case it's OOO Misc Files-46199-1-5-14-1702157063 which in the BCF is for OOO Misc Files-46199-1-5-13, I have tried all the Misc file from the page but none seem compatible with the BCF version. Thanks!

Can anyone explain how to use Wyre Bash BCFs collection properly?

I was somehow able to apply it to MenuQue and AddActorValues, but when I try to use it on SB_WeaponDropFix the 'apply' is greyed out and I can only 'create.'

Edit: lol turns out the mod author updated SB_WeaponDropFix TODAY (23/02/25) so the BCF doesn't work on it anymore. Downloaded previous version and it was fixed!

Could someone help me? I don't like the replacement of leather armor as it is. Is there any way to make leather armor look like the one in Vanilla Gear Redux?

Another question too, do you think Mart's Monster Mod works with this setup?

I think that's from the mod "Oblivion Content Restoration". Not sure why this mod replaced every normal leather armor in the game. In my case, it even replaced the normal thief armor.

There is a patch included in the "Miscellaneous Patch Collection by Dispensation" mod.

It's under "Oblivion Content Restoration Project Patches - DisMiscPatch_OCRP_Original brown leather armor restored".

A few months too late, but maybe that helps :)

Hey, If someone could help me I would appreciate it. I'm experienced a bug where when I try to wait or sleep the time slider is stuck all the way to the right and at 0. I've read that it might have something to do with oblivion reloaded. I've tried changing the whole sleep mode in the ini but that doesn't fix it.

Going into the Link++ menu for ExtendedUI and changing the max wait time fixed it for me, you can set it back to 24 hours if you like, just wiggle the bar around then exit the menu, check to see if it works, then
set it to what you want, then save. Not sure why it needs this though.

I've been playing oblivion since it came out in 2006 and i was 12 years old.  I've modded my game ever since the first tools came
out and kept it up till probably about 2014.  After a decade i've come back to oblivion, having to relearn much of how to mod this game and
about all the developments since then. I tried wabbajack lists, i tried setting up my own.. And had a rough time. Finally i stumbled on this  list.. And wow. I've never had an easier time creating the exact modlist i want.  I know you're no longer maintaining this, but your insights were so valuable and the guide still works like a dream with only minor changes that i had to make due to updated mods or outdated links.  To anyone reading this, this guide is still very much amazing.  I personally used mod organizer 2 instead of wrye, and i regret this decision a little. I did it because i didn't get some things working in wrye right away and so figured it'd be easier to just use mo2.  Having followed your guide i'm absolutely shocked how i'm thinking back now that wrye bash might still be the better mod manager and i wished i'd used it even if just to use your BCF files.  Though considering i got some errors trying to do anything in the installer section of wrye bash i guess at least i saved time just sticking with mo2.  Your guide was also very helpful with additional comments on how to get certain things working in mo2.  I learned so much!  Especially when it comes to some external tools and the LOD section.

So even though you're no longer maintaining this. if you're still reading these comments occasionally, thank you so much! I basically followed the whole list aside from keeping some things out to taste and adding a few additional quest mods i was nostalgic about. And it only took me a bit over 2 days to get everything up and running.  I was planning on 2 weeks! Through knowing myself i'll still add and tweak a bunch until it breaks and then fix it again lmao. I can't help myself. this went too smooth!
