I don't have a Steam Deck, so I can't say for sure, but have you completely disabled native controller support on Steam? If that doesn't work, you can try using NorthernUI Hotkeys (OBSE).
Okay I have done some testing, seems like the mod does not like steam input at all. You cant use this on the steamdeck (forced to use Steam Input) with the decks onboard controller. If you use an Xbox controller then you should be able to disable the steaminput within the settings for the game and it will work just fine with an original xbone controller.
Figured it out, gotta disable joystick within the oblivion ini and have the most update xobse, great mod.
And this gets it working with the built-in Steam Deck controller? I tried this (in Oblivion_default.ini) and it made no difference. When I hold down Y, nothing happens at all.
this worked for me, sorry for necro, but i spent 2 hours trying to add hotkey support to northerui today and i want people to futher know that this is the way
So I installed all the pre requisite programs, but when in game, in the inventory screen, and I try to assign an inventory item to the hotkeys (by pressing Y), the hotkey menu appears and I can select the D pad direction to assign the inventory item to. At that time, the item appears where I want it on the hotkey menu. Seems ok.
But when I exit the hotkey menu and reenter it (either by assigning another item to the hokey menu, or exiting the inventory menu), the item I previously assigned just disappears from the hot key menu. No matter what I try, nothing saves to the hotkey menu after assigning it.
This is happening on my ROG Ally and PC (both running Windows 11).
Is it possible to add additional hotkeys outside of the D-PAD? NorthernUI Wheel Hotkeys is working great on my SteamDeck, but I'd love to add hotkeys for the back buttons too. So far my best solution has been to bind the back buttons as D-PAD directions, but I'd like to have additional hotkeys instead of just duplicating. I see that buttons 10 and 11 are unused by default for this mod. I could bind my back buttons to those keys, but not sure how to then utilize them. Is there a way to achieve this? Thanks!
I installed this mod on PC, (Windows 10) and it worked flawlessly there, and have only ever been able to get mods working on Steam Deck by copying and transferring my Steam folder for the game, and the Oblivion folder inside AppData/Local and My Documents/My Games/Oblivion, but when I run it on Steam deck, it gives me the messages that "This save relies on content that is no longer present" and the hotkey wheel doesn't work at all, despite the fact that I can see the mod files in the game folder on my Steam Deck in desktop mode.
I have no idea why it can't see it. Everything else works, and the only real annoyance would be if I have to switch between Steam Deck and PC via cloud saves, since I would lose the hoykey wheel mappings when switching, and have to set them up all over again.
I tried both with and without Link and MenuQue, and it seems that having them installed crashes the game to desktop for me on both Windows 10 and Steam Deck, and they were listed as optional so I'm fine with the vanilla wheel experience.
I've already tried disabling the joystick in the INI file in the My Documents folder, but no one seemed to spell out how to do that, so I presume it was changing the value "bUse Joystick=0" like that.
I also confirmed that the controller settings D-Pad are mapped to the D-pad buttons, and even tried some other recommended control schemes, but I think my issues is that the game isn't recognizing a file needed for the mod to work, hence the "Relies on content that is no longer available" message.
I just wish Vortex could end up working on Steam Deck the same as it works on PC. But yeah, any help would be appreciated.
Thank you. Apparently the issue was the joystick was enabled in Oblivion.INI. Disabling it in there seems to have fixed the problem. Now the game works flawlessly on the controller!
Friends! Please help, I have followed all of these instructions meticulously, I cannot get the hotkeys to work.
If I enable controller in steam settings, any touch of the D-pad brings up the hotkey menu (great!) until I cannot navigate the map. If I disable the controller in steam settings, D-pad just works as the joysticks do with no ability to place hotkeys (y button does nothing).
If I make bUse Joystick=0 or =1 nothing happens :(
I really want to play the game like I did when I was a kid, any help would be extremely appreciated!
For anyone else still having an issue, it's likely due to steam defaulting to a community controller layout (mine was set to airloafs) - which would map the steamdeck buttons to keyboard keys (thus not allowing NorthernUI to detect them). You can fix it by opening the controller layout for the game, and choosing either the "Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad" from Templates, or search for "airloaf NorthernUI" to get a layout with quicksave support.

Check out the post above about the Steam Deck. If that doesn’t work, disable controller support for Oblivion from the Steam client. If that still doesn’t work, update xOBSE. If that still doesn’t work, try using NorthernUI Hotkeys (OBSE). If that still doesn’t work, try using NorthernUI Hotkeys. If that still doesn’t work, give up.
I’m not playing Oblivion anymore, so I won’t bother fixing anything unless it’s a clear, identifiable issue.
It works for you? So it saves whatever you hotkey? Mine won't save what I hotkey (even though it shows I hotkey an item to the selected slot. Then bringing up the hotkey menu it just disappears like nothing was ever hotkeyed)
Drag and drop in your games data folder, then enable the esp in your mod manager or launch the OblivionLauncher.exe and enable the esp in the data files tab.
I know this will probably never happen, but I would love a Fallout 4-style of D-PAD hotkeys, where for each press of a single D-PAD button it cycles through sequentially-assigned hotkey slots.
I've written a mod that does this for New Vegas, but I don't how feasible this is for Oblivion.
Just because I find using the corner D-PAD hotkey slots to be very unwieldy/awkward.
I think you could achieve this by effectively using MenuQue. Mods created by DavaScript might serve as a good reference for your implementation. While you will need to get familiar with XML formatting, I think your skills could enable you to create a comparable mod for Oblivion, just as you did for New Vegas. As mentioned in the permissions section, feel free to reuse any part of my mod's code that you find helpful.
Alternatively, if you want to continue using my mod, it would be a good idea to set up the Diagonal Selection button. I’ve mapped it to the left trigger, and once you get used to it, I think it will be quite comfortable to use.

The few mods that exist seem to be either incompatible with NorthernUI, or have been made exclusively for controllers (not keyboards)...
Thanks for helping!

Here's the mod list I installed to make this work. Am I missing something?
