About this mod

This mod allows you to modify the speed at which your character levels up. No more being level 20 after increasing couple of your skills to 100.

Note, this mod doesn't modify the speed it takes your skills to increase, but rather the amount of skill increases required to achieve a level up.

Overview
In original Oblivion, you would level up after you increase your 'Major' skills 10 times, in remastered however, the leveling up is based on experience gained. Some quirks of that are:

  • Leveling up from level 1 to level 2 is faster than leveling from level 21 to level 22
  • Increasing a skill from 5 to 6 will contribute a lot less to leveling up than increasing the same skill from level 99 to level 100

I don't think this system is bad per se, however, I think that leveling happens way too fast now. For me it seems like you completely miss the middlegame, as you level up so fast that you end up having the best gear in no time.

Note: this mod doesn't modify the speed it takes your skills to increase, but rather the amount of skill increases required to achieve a level up.

Options
This mod offers a number of configurations which adjust how many skill point increases you need to level up.
Configurations available:
  • 1.0x original -- max level 43
  • 1.5x slower leveling -- max level 38
  • 2.0x slower leveling -- max level 33
  • 2.2x slower  leveling (recommended) -- max level 31
  • 2.5x slower leveling -- max level 29
  • 3.25x slower leveling -- max level 25
  • 4.0x slower leveling (for RPG purists, slow, but definitely playable) -- max level 23
  • 1.2x faster leveling (for the crazy ones who don't think that vanilla leveling is fast enough) -- max level 55

Installation guide
You simply have to place your chosen `.pak` file in the `Paks` directory, which should be found in
*Installation Directory* --> OblivionRemastered --> Content --> Paks

No need to update Plugins.txt or anything like that. Just paste the file in Paks directory and you are done.

More in-depth explanation
The settings which control how fast/slow your character levels up (not the skill increase) are stored in
OblivionRemastered-Windows.pak --> OblivionRemastered --> Config --> DefaultAltar.ini

The default settings are:
SkillLevelUpGrantedXPExponent=1.500000
PlayerLevelUpBaseLevelXP=1940.000000
PlayerLevelUpXPFactor=60.000000

By looking at these values, I'm guessing that formulas for XP are:
XP from increasing skill = (skill_level)^SkillLevelUpGrantedXPExponent

XP required for level N = PlayerLevelUpBaseLevelXP + (PlayerLevelUpXPFactor * f(N-1))

Where f(N-1) is some function (possibly exponential) of the level.

As you can see, Oblivion: Remastered uses non-linear scaling for leveling, and the configurations I made are just my guesstimations on how they compare to the vanilla settings.

Here is some data which showcases the difference between vanilla and my files:

Vanilla:
To reach level 2, you need experience equivalent of increasing a skill from 1 to 29
To reach level 3, you need experience equivalent of increasing a skill from 1 to 41

Making your own variations
If you are interested to make your own versions, this post provides thorough explanation on how you can edit `.pak` files yourself:

Recommendations
This is nothing to do with my mod itself, but rather, general mod recommendations which I think target similar niche as my mod

  • Balanced NPC Level cap --> Enemies no longer 100% scale with the player, so at some point, when you are badass enough, you will start whooping weaker NPC asses, rather than them always keeping up with you no matter what, which is the case in vanilla.

  • Skill Leveling XP Curvature Increased--> Changes how fast/slow your skills increase (not how many skill increases you need to level up, which is what my mod does).
    WARNING, previously suggested mod which was supposed to carry out this task was broken.

  • Ascension Remastered --> Too many changes to list. Essentially makes it so that weaker enemies won't completely disappear from the game once you level up a bunch, hence allowing you to feel the progress of your character getting stronger.

Additionally, I have to note that slower leveling will make game slower, but easier. For example, in vanilla, by the time you achieve level 20 and face level 20 enemies, you will have couple skills at 100 or close to it. However, if you play at 4.0x slower speed, by the time you reach level 20 and face level 20 enemies, almost all your skills will be at 100.

To counteract this, you would need to increase game difficulty, either in game, or with mods. If anyone is interested, here is difficulty setup which I tried to tune to be somewhere between "Adept" and "Expert", while also being more volatile, i.e. you will kill enemies faster, but enemies will kill you faster as well:

  • 2.2x slower leveling option for this mod

  • "Adept" difficulty in game

  • "Enemy_2x_Damage_2.5x_Health.esp" which I added as an optional file for this mod. I made this mod by using More Damage mod and then essentially slapping a fixed version of Difficulty Remastered on top of it. Download Deluxe version if you have Deluxe version of the game, otherwise, download the regular version.
    You are likely to experience crash the first time you load this mod. To fix this, start a new game, and then load your desired save game after that. No idea why this 'fix' works, but it just does!
    This mod will also override other mods which mess with Creature data, so if you are using 3x version of More Damage mode and then place my mod after it, my mod will override it. Likewise, if you would place 3x More Damage mod after my mod, it would override it, and you would lose creature health bonus.
WARNING, previously recommended mod - Difficulty Remastered is broken as of me writing this message. The mod was supposed to increase health of all enemies, however, it only increases health of NPCs, but not creature enemies.

These settings are of course just my preference, and you might want to change them to whatever you prefer.
