How to install properly FISS for Skyrim 1.5.97 and AE 1.6.640 and 1.6.1130 and Optional Experimental Eslifying:
Important: Is still need it the original FISS mod, since this update only carry the modification to the SKSE plugin, not the script nor the plugin itself.
Vortex Users: I do not use it, so, if for any reason you have problems using FISS, apply this update manually opening the folder where is FISS installed and merge when prompted. MO2 users: Just merge with the original when installing, don't create a new mod below. NMM users: no using it so anyone else should explain how to proceed, but basically you need to do the same as with MO2, do not create a new mod below, merge with the original FISS folder's mod with this update.
OPTIONAL EXPERIMENTAL ESM Eslified: if you are at the limit of LO slots for ESM and ESP (254), and need to spare your precious slots, you can try to Eslify it, as I did, BUT, before you proceed, understand that there is a tool under development in the link below, so is your responsibility to use it properly, I´m using it at Skyrim 1.5.97 version, so AE edition is unknown to me if will work, worst case scenario, if not, you will have to delete the FISS mod and reinstall the original and this update and use as a "pure" ESM. The tool in question is:
Instructions to Eslify FISS.esp: You will need xEdit (aka SSEEdit). I´m using the version 4.0.4, so if you have a newer version, please update us if your attempt was successful or not and I will edit this comment accordingly. Download manually the Main File (ESPFE Follower) from the link above, decompress the file and put it in the SSEEdit folder, overwrite if asked, chances are 99,99% you don´t have it installed, so probably you will not get asked when transferring the Edit Script folder.
Open in MO2 (or Vortex, If is the case) SSEEdit and load only FISS.esp, once the load is finished, right click on FISS.esp and click on "Apply Script...". In the Selection Box Script, chose "__ESPFEFollower" and click OK. The process is fast, so read the message and when it says Done: Applying Script "__ESPFEFollower", proceed to again right click on FISS.esp and now go to the bottom of the options and click OTHER-->Create SEQ File. In the message tab it will tell you that 1 SEQ file was created.
Now close and when asked, save the modifications to FISS.esp. Finally, for those using MO2, you will have a folder in Overwrite (Seq), you need to place it inside the FISS folder in the left windows. For those using Vortex, someone please comment us how to put the Seq folder inside the FISS mod.
Now FISS is not using one of your esp/esm slots.
I tested already a few times, with an FISS.esp already Eslified ESM, and it did saved my setting on more than 30 mods I tried, for testing purposes, no ctds, no strange fonts. All working properly. Be aware that the Settings Loader for the respective mod you are trying to use it has to be compatible with the actual version of the mod itself. There is not guarantee that an older Settings will work on newer mod's versions but you can try anyway.
Remember: doesn't matter if you are using FISS.esp as a ESM or as a ESM Eslified (ESM-ESL): place it always at the top of your LO, otherwise things will not work.
Comeback to give us feedback.
Thanks to LordConti2, TERENCEYAO, epinter and grvulture for create and continue to develop in some cases and provide a centralized link on the other hand to this useful mod.
In game, go into the moreHUD MCM and try to save using FISS. moreHUD > Preset > Save Settings with FISS? > Save User Settings? > Go
-If successful, it lets you do it. If you have MO2, the file gets put in your Overwrite folder. FISS is working! -If unsuccessful, you get message: "FISS not found. Operation aborted!" FISS is not working.
----- Update: 2025/02/02 Even though FISS.esp is flagged as an ESM and is high in the plugin order (low priority, MO2 right side), the FISS mod order has to give it high priority (put it low on the MO2 left side) for it to work.
Also, if you have issues, there are log files you can look at. For me it is in: \Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\SKSE\FISS.log
Please report issues and other game version results.
Hello and thanks for your mini guide. I followed every step but I still get "fiss.dll disabled: incompatible with current version of the game". Then it asks me if I want to start the game anyway, which I did. I've been playing for some hours now and still no crash whatsoever... not sure if the warning message is trolling me or not
Ok, I am not clear which version of FileAccess Interface this is patching:
Is it FileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (Anniversary Edition) BETA v1.4.1 or it is:
FileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (Special Edition) v1.3.7
Sorry but this isn't clear to me. Would appreciate some clarification to this. I've read a number of posts below trying to figure it out, and it's just not clear to me. Thanks.
VORTEX All you need is the .dll and the .ini After installing right click on it in you mod menu and "Manage Conflicts" Use this mod for the .dll and the .ini Use FISSES for the .xml Working good for me. :)
I am putting this in spoilers to avoid taking too much space. See my OTHER post that has just the final mini-tutorial. Only read this "wall of words" thread here for details of various FISS mods and me figuring stuff out. Thanks!
Figuring out 1.6.640 FISS
Spoiler:

TL;DR I found a way to get 1.6.640 and FISS working and ESLed. Plus a simple way to test if your FISS works. Hoping for comments and someone to test v1.6.1170. I also got FISS both ESLed AND working in 1.6.1170! See my "reply" post. Please test and report back.
--- OK, I think I found a way to test if FISS (and thus ESLing FISS) is working. (I posted earlier on this page)
In game, go into the moreHUD MCM and try to save using FISS. moreHUD > Preset > Save Settings with FISS?
-If successful, it lets you do it. If you have MO2, the file gets put in your Overwrite folder. -If unsuccessful, you get message: FISS not found. Operation aborted!
So I tested ESLing FISS. I used the well known ESPFE Follower ESL script (that TakodaWahya mentions).
Note that I am still on 1.6.640! I will upgrade to latest game version soon. (Update: I have since updated to 1.6.1170, see below)
Combo 1: OriginalFileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (TERENCEYAO FISS) fisses-ng v.1.4.3 (which should be the same as 1.4.2 from this mod page, but it is one version newer, right?) Ran the ESL script, tested in game - FISS IS ESLed, game runs fine, but FISS does not work in moreHUD.
For now I will stick with combo 3. Am I missing something? Could someone please try to get 1.6.1170/latest version ESLed and working and post their findings here?
The TERENCEYAO FISS, (what I inaccurately referred to as Original FISS) has a GetFormFromFile reference in a script that makes it NOT ESLable by itself.
Yeah, I put the three together and I get FISS both ESLed AND working in 1.6.1170!
Tested with my Is FISS Working - moreHUD Test posted above. Please report back your results!
Thanks to grvulture for this page and keeping this going! If possible, it may be good to update to the latest GitHub version of this mod. I posted a simplified mini-tutorial to make things easier for users.
MFs (me) will trust a three month old comment their entire modlist instead of doing the propper research. I will be back with the news when i get here again to endorse.
Followed your instructions. Could not get it to work with the Github version but does seem to work with this page's version. Thanks for taking the time to post a solution. Much appreciated!

1) For v.1.6.1170, in this order:
FileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (TERENCEYAO FISS) v.1.4.1-beta
FISSES ESLified Patch (jyurii) v.1.3.6
Either the file from grvulture's FILES page here OR fisses-ng (epinter) v.1.4.3 (the Github version of this page)
2) For v.1.6.640, in this order:
FileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (TERENCEYAO FISS) v.1.4.1-beta
FISSES ESLified Patch (jyurii) v.1.3.6
3) Optional: Is FISS Working? - moreHUD Test: Test in game if FISS is really working.
Make sure both moreHUD (by ahzaab) AND moreHUD SE - Legacy Settings Loader (by MaskedRPGFan) (it needs FISS) are installed (other FISS dependent mods should work, also).

Thank you this worked wonders for me and is now working as should. You are awesome!
Thanks.
It will not patch the AE Beta version.
All you need is the .dll and the .ini
After installing right click on it in you mod menu and "Manage Conflicts"
Use this mod for the .dll and the .ini
Use FISSES for the .xml
Working good for me. :)
THANK YOU FOR THE MOD .. YOU ROCK!!!
Nevermind, WallRockTree's additional context helped.
Figuring out 1.6.640 FISS
I found a way to get 1.6.640 and FISS working and ESLed. Plus a simple way to test if your FISS works.
Hoping for comments and someone to test v1.6.1170.
I also got FISS both ESLed AND working in 1.6.1170! See my "reply" post. Please test and report back.---
OK, I think I found a way to test if FISS (and thus ESLing FISS) is working. (I posted earlier on this page)
Is FISS Working - moreHUD Test:
Make sure both moreHUD AND moreHUD SE - Legacy Settings Loader (it needs FISS) are installed.
Combo 1:
OriginalFileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (TERENCEYAO FISS)fisses-ng v.1.4.3 (which should be the same as 1.4.2 from this mod page, but it is one version newer, right?)
Ran the ESL script, tested in game - FISS IS ESLed, game runs fine, but FISS does not work in moreHUD.
Combo 2:
OriginalFileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (TERENCEYAO FISS) by itselfno compacting/ESLing
FISS DOES work in moreHUD, but is NOT ESLed
Combo 3: (This is the 1.6.640 way)
OriginalFileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (TERENCEYAO FISS)FISSES ESLified Patch
FISS DOES work in moreHUD and is ESLed!
But this 1.6.1170 combo seemed to work:
FileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES (TERENCEYAO FISS) v.1.4.1-beta
FISSES ESLified Patch (jyurii) v.1.3.6
fisses-ng (epinter) v.1.4.3 (the Github version of this page. The file from this page (epinter/grvulture)
shouldapparently works, also)Yeah, I put the three together and I get FISS both ESLed AND working in 1.6.1170!
Tested with my Is FISS Working - moreHUD Test posted above. Please report back your results!
Thanks to grvulture for this page and keeping this going! If possible, it may be good to update to the latest GitHub version of this mod. I posted a simplified mini-tutorial to make things easier for users.
