As previously stated on the mod page and in the accompanying documentation, A Horse's Life is intended to replace Convenient Horses and Immersive Horses. It is not compatible with either, as all three mods make substantial changes to how horses are managed in Skyrim.
SC Horses

While it would be relatively simple to create a patch for SC Horses, I’m currently hesitant for a couple of reasons:
1. It would significantly limit the number of horse variants available in the game, reducing them from around 14 down to just the standard 5.
2. Following that, players would inevitably request a patch for Equestrian, which is far more complicated and would lead into a minefield of issues I’m not prepared to tackle right now.
Oblivion Horses
Spoiler:

Oblivion Horses is a great option for improving the look and feel of horses — and it brings a nice touch of nostalgia. However, due to the author's asset permissions (restricting them to mods that don't receive donation points), I can't simply include the assets with A Horse's Life. The alternative would be to make Oblivion Horses a hard requirement, but that would make installation more cumbersome than ideal.
Light Horses

This is personally my favorite and a bit of a hidden gem on Nexus. However, the way it combines tails and manes into a single mesh makes patching very difficult. Unless the meshes are separated (which is beyond my skillset) or unless I leverage Immersive Equipment Displays with a detailed installation guide, a patch isn’t realistically possible.
Ideal Solution
The ideal solution would be for someone to create a fresh set of horse textures (and optionally, new models) that complement Skyrim’s original art style — offering new breeds and coats without dragging in endless Witcher-imported saddles and conflicting changes.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time or desire to dive into 3D modeling and texture creation myself, so that's not something you’ll see coming from me.
Conclusion
When I started A Horse’s Life, it was first and foremost to satisfy my own vision of a horse mod — and to challenge myself to accomplish something I’d never done before. I’m incredibly proud of the result. This project has been a long, demanding journey that I’ve worked on in my free time outside of a full-time job. It eventually reached the point where even just loading up the game to test was exhausting. You can probably imagine why I'm not quick to jump into the additional work of patching complex mods right now. A Horse’s Life isn’t a simple system to manage, expand, or patch. For that reason, I’m going to let it sit for a while — much like I did with my follower framework — giving players time to explore it, uncover its secrets, report any lingering issues, and let it breathe. Once I’ve had time to recharge, I’ll revisit it with fresh energy and consider creating patches in the future.
Many Thanks
Many of you have shared your wishes for features like X, Y, and Z. While I’m not planning to expand A Horse’s Life any further in the immediate future, I’m always open to hearing your suggestions and I completely understand why some may prefer to stick with one of the alternative mods out there. I encourage you to give A Horse’s Life a try — and if it’s not quite what you're looking for right now, I sincerely thank you for downloading it. I recommend tracking the mod, as future updates may bring it closer to what you’re hoping for.
It may be a silly question but does the "horse shoes" item have a limited number of uses or something like that? Or do I just buy it once and it allows me to tend to my horse's hooves indefinitely for the rest of the playthrough? This feature got me very excited because I was hoping that it could serve as a cool, immersive money sink, but so far I've been able to tend to my horse's hooves twice using the single "horse shoes" item I bought from the hostler. Maybe I'm just missing something, but if that's not already a feature, would you, perhaps, consider adding this as a feature in a future update? Either making it so the "horse shoes" item somehow degrades and has to be eventually bought again, or that using it requires a resource of some sort? Loving the mod btw.
It should be a one use item. If it's not disappearing from your inventory, it sounds like a bug I need to address. Please add to bug reports and I'll take a look.
It's a much more complicated system. I may need to put together a guide as there's a number of systems that work in tandem that horses must be added to.
This mod is the bee's knees! Absolutely superior to the amazing older mods of it's kind. Everything I wanted in a horse mod and then some! You sir are amazing and thank you for your hard work! I would love if this could work with Steeds of Skyrim! It's my favorite horse retexture, they're just so cute
Working on a patch as we speak! It won't have all features for the time being (Extended module won't be compatible until I figure out adding new horses into the system, and I'm disabling coat selection for similar reasons), but by and large everything in the base mod is working and I just need to make a few new coats to fill out the additional horses.
Amazing mod. Just 2 issues that I didn't have with Convinent Horses and not sure if it is related to your mod.
Getting some texture issues. The underfur textures are all messed up. The eye appears on half of the tail, and the other half of the tail is invisible. Maybe it is related to Fluffworks since it is the only mod that works with textures besides PG patcher.
Also, something is strange with forward motion behavior. Wild horse that I found was perfect, you press forward and it would walk, run, sprint forward, but then I've bought a horse in whiterun stable and this horse was flinging his head left to right when I was walking and runing forward, and it would walk in a slower speed. Only when I sprinted forward sometimes it would go straight. Not sure if a feature.
My horse animations mods: RAO/HAO, Horse Behavior Improvements, Better Horse Dismouting, Horses Simply Turn Better (Will try disabling this one). And skills of the wild.
I use Wild Horses of Oblivion, Unicorn Only version. I'm checking now, but it looks like that has some mild issues. I think I can manage them myself, but thought i should let you know. (The unicorn is invisible). And this looks way more fun than Immersive or Convenient horses. Edit- I can't fix it. I have no idea why the unicorn is invisible. It's really dramatic- I was riding the unicorn when I saved the game. now I'm mounted on a saddle, mid-air.
awesome mod, darkfox. this is a massive step up in functionality from convenient horse and immersive horse ( both of which as till great mods btw) i was wondering about compatibility with sc horses though. i was hoping you could shed some light on that. anyhow, thanks for the mod.
I'm going to take a look at SC Horses and Oblivion Horses for patches. What I really wanted was Light Horses but the tail and mane are attached which causes major issues with Barding.
I will be looking at Wheeler yes. UIExtensions wheel was my first play around with that and hockey functionality but it's now dated and Wheeler does offer some nice extras I want to try out.

Immersive horses had a simple JSON file, but I can't figure out your mod :)

Any ideas?
Horse animation issues will not be related to this mod as I don't change the horse nif nor any animations so check the other mods you listed.

Amazing mod by the way as it adds alot of immersion glad i didnt start my new game yet, will swap it out with immersive horses.
