To any new people coming here, I suggest checking out the changes made by At Your Own Pace, it allows you to skip werewolf transformation and other improvements, I have been using AYOW for many years, but only did the Companions questline in vanilla 13 years ago (again, because I dont want to be a werewolf), and didnt even realize AYOP fixes this, so that might also be what you are looking for. AYOP is a mandatory mod really.
so, can you actually finish the questline without becoming a werewolf? If not, it's pointless to refuse to become a werewolf. You could just have never entered the cave without even downloading the mod and it would be the same outcome.
Bump. I hate it when descriptions (even the translations) are not clear on this. Like, you made a mod and expect me to download it and waste twenty minutes just to check whether it actually does what I want?
Based on some lower comments this mod seems pretty pointless to me, merely giving you access to Skjor and Aela while still deciding on whether to proceed with the Companion Questline or not. So the questline and ONLY option to become a werewolf still stay the same...
@DiabolicGod Um...you realize mods aren't a service right? They don't make them expecting anything of you, they make them to share. I don't understand why so many gamers think modding is a service when it's just community luxury.
@Nezahueatez DiabolicGod expresses a very understandable frustration with vague descriptions. I too am frustrated by mods with vague descriptions or no images. Neither of us has demanded that such mods be removed, it is a frustration that we are freely allowed to feel. You get no say in this.
Oh, and not once does he indicate mods are a service.
@wjd00 He definitely sounded like a disgruntled customer "and expect me to download it and waste twenty minutes just to check whether it actually does what I want?". I don't think the author cares what he thinks, or you for that matter, nor should he. Either d/l or not, or perhaps ask a question instead of crying.
The most important issues of the companions this mod didn't solve them. - The ridiculous behavior of observers letting themselves get hit by enemies until they figure that an enemy is attacking the player. - Stuck on sneak mode of observers (solved it on my own) - As long as Aela is a werewolf there is no way for me to use her as follower. She refuse to attack animals. (there is no mod that allow her to be cured) - The torch of Aela (a bummer for stealth characters)
Asking the most intelligent question will never allow anyone to be rude and self-entitled. Authors don't owe you sh*t. If you think this is too vague of a description, then don't use it. Or test the mod for yourself and report to the community and be useful.
Good thing I came to the comments, I wanted to do the questline without being a werewolf, this doenst really fix that, doesnt even end the quest line so it doesnt stay stuck in your journal for ever... so not really what I was looking for.
And about the controversy, no, mod authors dont owe anyone anything, but we do this out of passion, and we share for the love of the community, they/we too deserve in dept descriptions to decide if your mod is for them. I say this as a mod author myself, on this and another account I have uploaded mods, and every single one I take my time to be helpful, clear, and answer any questions, otherwise there not even a point to sharing.
If youre on a radiant companions quest like family heirloom does skjor wait for you to complete that first before going back to his new schedule of waiting outside the underforge at night? Because he just stays awake in jorvasskr in the main area when previously he would be waiting outside the underforge at night with this mod, is he waiting for the quest to be turned in before going back to his schedule? Update: Skjor is just waiting for the quest to be turned in then he resumes his schedule.
Tried it, because stuck in questline. Working, can continue. So far so good. But now I got sometimes CTD in or around the building. Finished the mainquest and disabled the mod. No CTD anymore.
any chance for an At Your Own Pace - Companions patch? the only compatibility issue seems to be Aela never being your shield-sibling during Proving Honor.
Same issue here. Even when I have this mod overwriting AYOP, Aela is never selected as my shield-sibling. This means it's probably a script conflict, which makes sense given that AYOP contains many script fragments. I know nothing about scripting, but if anybody else wants to make a patch, that's where I'd recommend starting.
This is yet another abysmal quest by Bethesda. The kind "This is a RPG where every last quest only has ONE freaking option with NO choice or Roleplay option whatsoever". Here, they chose to forcefeed the option to become a werewolf rather than any other option that was clearly laid out but never explored, because they thought it would be the most satisfying option for Kevin, 10 years old. And then, they added a way to cure it because they introduced vampires afterwards, and Kevin 10 years old can't stand frustration and choice.
I am currently in the process of trying to mod as many quests as possible in the 'game' in order to, at least, bring this garbage pile of a RPG to a C- rated kind of RPG. So much work to make it mediocre. That annoys me so, so damn much. You never have a choice anywhere in this. It is always linear, NO actually means YES, in every fake quest of this poor Light Novel, barely-interactive-low-quality-direct-to-video-movie, because it becomes easier for Beth to make the whole thing, costs less money (Molag Bal quest is an atrocity, too)... And even though they do that, it is still buged as f**k. I just spent 1300 hours on Pathfinder Kingmaker and i simply can't take Skyrim level of mediocrity anymore. Makes me so damn angry, anytime i play a quest, to see that i am railroaded on a road i do not want to take, but have to take anyway because Skyrim doesn't give any other choice in any quest... I am spectator of everything, when it is supposed to be a RPG.
Quite frankly, the obvious secondary route for this questline would be to follow Kodlak and look for a remedy to the curse, not for yourself, but for the circle. Meaning, refusing Skjor and Aela, report to Kodlak about what they do, confront the two (kill them if they refuse the cure), and finally purify the companions from the werewolves curse. This would be a logical option. But now... Beth wanted Kevin, 10 years old, to feel great, so they killed Kodlak instead, so that you could become the leader of the Companions, no matter if you came last. It is the same with the College, where you can become archmage out of nowhere, even if you hardly even know how to cast a light spell. It is laughably bad. Another option would be to side with the Silver Hand and crush the companions altogether. But Bethesda made them a decerebrate group of idiots meant for meat chopping, because it would have been too much work to make a proper faction out of them... OMG, this drives me crazy. Even C-rate RPGs made with no budget, on Kickstater or whatnot, actually can handle this bare minimum consistently... But not Skyrim. 'It just works' hu? Todd ! Revolting.
Salvaging garbage really takes a lot of modding talent and patience, and i thank you and all other moders for this. That is still nowhere where this quest line should have been, but this is still much better than vanilla. So, thanks !
A truer comment has rarely been said! well spoken! Bethesda sees that the fans will fix the game for them so they do the bare minimum of the work the worst thing is most people focus on THE f*#@ing GRAPHICS when they download mods, not the quests or gameplay! (not all clearly) making bricks nicer in a game from 2011 Bethesda "editions" are proof of that, nothing being reworked in them,no cut ideas that didnt have time to be made...finally created!...no additions than the CC bullshit...Nothing! not even good bug fixes! they are the luckiest company in the world...where the buyers are dumb enough to fix their game for them instead of them demanding that the standards be raised instead of..."simplified" to death, and bethesda sees that and continue to reduce effort..."why add interesting new or old systems back (daggerfall and morrowind good GOD) when a mod can do that for us?" but then again...poor small studio bethesda...new in the industry and just dont have time for their most succecssful game...but do have the time to get another "version" that STILL ADDS NOTHING NEW and people buy it!
Very true, if only they hired proper writers and focused on that more... Just look at what Obsidian did with Fallout NV in 18months in terms of quests, roleplay etc. (even though I really enjoyed the atmosphere and gameplay of Fallout 3)
Pathfinder Kingmaker was cool but had A LOT of problems as well.
I know people love new vegas, but this is also how I feel about so many new vegas quests that force you into a false choice between two and only two bad options, where the option to be a hero in that game is denied. But at least it had two bad options instead of only one :-)
Allow me to chime in and say that I completely agree, with all the graphic and gameplay mods installed. There is one crucial aspect that need to be overhauled the most is the f*#@ing atrocity call quest. I mean, bro I cleared the college quest without using a single spell and I'm still an archmage???
Bethesda have no idea how to make a Fighter's Guild quesline interesting, so they decided that you should turn into werewolf instead, because werewolves are SO COOL.
It's almost like games aren't made with the same vision and that developers are artists. The truth is most gamers don't see games as art. Not every game is an RPG in the sense that it makes you arbitrary feel like you have a "choice" in every story beat.
Honestly, is this suppose to be a sane and enlightened critique? It's pure polemic and makes you seem crazy for playing a game you don't like.
On the Lilybonymace's Patches page that Viekang linked to, I see only one item about "At Your Own Pace" and it's not about "Improved Companions."
The Companions portion of At Your Own Pace does a lot, as listed here: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/52704 I don't understand enough about how mods work to know whether the these two mods can play nice together. It'd be cool to get all the benefits of both mods.
However, if we don't hear from somebody knowledgeable about reassurance or a patch, I think I should pick one of them, probably At Your Own Pace....
I've looked it over in xEdit. There is no script conflicts, but there is one minor conflict in the esp. Should be easy to patch, but honestly it shouldn't need one if you just load this mod before AYOP.
Some of the feature of this mod, such as the giant attack, are still useful even if you don't want to be a werewolf.
Like others, I thought this mode include an option to skip becoming a werewolf but continue the companion quest line. I think it would help if the mod description was made clearer.

and xEdit reported no conflicts so all good for now,
will test it ingame also to make sure when im done modding (if ever lol)
Thank you, gl hf
