I do wish there was a way to be able to borrow Meeko back occasionally. I also wish there was a way to give Lod and other NPCs other dogs, but from what has been said here, that sounds difficult.

Edit: I just confirmed that the nice mod Improved Meeko SE keeps Meeko "essential" (even the PC can't kill him), even after you give Meeko to Lod. Cool!
Edit 2: It turns out that when I went to give Meeko to Lod, NFF released the follower in the number 1 slot instead of Meeko. I suggest making a save right before you do the hand off. Before the beginning the dialogue, I ended up going into NFF's MCM > Slots and History > Sorting: and I put Meeko in the "Game Slot". Then do the dialogue. That made it work. That and the console: set PlayerKnowsLodWantsADog to 1
Is it possible to make a second version that works for Stray Dogs? I love Meeko and want my kids to take him in, so I'd rather not. But the Stray Dogs you can get to follow you would make a great buddy for Lod. Maybe also let him name the stray dog?
The Stray Dogs are part of a random encounter and spawned through a quest alias. As such, they don't have a static RefID, which makes it difficult to implement them.
Works as intended. Even with AFT after I've dismissed Meeko she went straight to Lod's side. (I've started the Lod's mission, finished the quest "Daedra's best friend" installed this mod then went to get Meeko and brought her to Lod. (I've first used the dialogue option "I will keep a look for any stray dogs" or whatever that option said, memory bad.) She followed me still so I've dismissed her and now it all works perfectly. Latest GOG version as of making this comment with SKSE, SSE Engine Fixes, and Bug FIxes SSE AE version.
I had this as well I had normally brought Meeko to Lod and all was well. Then going to the inn Valdr was inside, as he usually seems to be. In going outside there was a Vampire attack in town. Meeko joined into the battle. I suspect he had the agro or Vampire disease effect state after that. A while after that I noticed Valdr going about trying to attack Meeko. At first the guards noticed and attacked Valdr getting him down, but Valdr is Essential; so after they leave he went for Meeko again. At first I tried using console command TAI to stop him from fighting, then moved him to the Inn. However the next time I came to Falkreath Valdr was at it again and I wasn't fast enough to save Meeko.
I love this mod and hope you can find an answer for how to deal with Valdr. I suppose the only way may to Not rescue Valdr
What a great mod! Always felt bad I couldn't help out Lod, and as much as I like Meeko, I usually just end up leaving pets at home, talk about two birds with one stone!
I was in the process of uploading a patch, but when selecting required mods I saw your mod Delayed Quest Starts in the drop-down menu. And that already has a patch, lol.
MO2 is claiming USSEP as a missing master for the patches between this and HHitPC (and the three-way patch for those and A Daedra's Best Friend - Delayed). I do not use USSEP, have not downloaded the USSEP patches, and this doesn't seem to be listed anywhere. Is this an error, either on your end or mine?
Nah, it's fine. These patches were made back when I still made patches. Nowadays I don't bother with them anymore and this is one of the reasons. I'm not even sure which 3-way patch you're talking about tbh.
Edit: I found the patch. It was on the Delayed Quest Starts page. Might be better to comment there instead of on this page, to avoid confusion. I have more than 200 mods to manage, so I can't remember every small patch I did.

Tip for console use: With the mods, More Informative Console and Copy and Paste in Console, you can paste that code into the console using control-End (the default).
