Just an observation: Let's say you only want your followers to be mortal (killable). Would we not achieve the same effect, without the unwanted side effects of broken quests, using the following console command?
Syntax setessential [base id] [0 / 1] Base ID The base ID of the NPC you wish to change the essential status of. This is NOT a reference ID - see NPC base IDs. 0 / 1 Specify (without quotes) '0' here to set the specified NPC as non-essential. Specify (without quotes) '1' here to set the specified NPC as essential.
Examples: To make an NPC killable, use 0 after base id.
setessential 000A2C8E 0 Lydia's NPC base ID is 000A2C8E. This command would make Lydia non-essential (meaning Lydia can die and not respawn).
OR To make essential (takes a knee), use 1 after base id.
setessential 0005CF36 1 The NPC base ID of Aicantar's Spider is 0005CF36. The above console command would make Aicantar's Spider essential.
this ini change does not work for me. i have followed to the letter exactly what the author / uploader has stated on instructions and it still does not work.
If you use Mod Organizer (I'm not sure about other mod managers), it will have no effect unless you make the changes to the skyrim.ini that is in the profile folder within the Mod Organizer folder. For me it is in D:/Modding/MO2/profiles/"name of which profile you want to modify" I hope this helps. Happy modding!
is it posible to make them first stand on knees (for scripts like dawnguard mission when you have to just knock out guy instead of killing him) and after that you can kill him with kill move meanwhile he is on the knees?(like ulfrik, that he is immortal during last mission of war and you can kill him with kill move when he is on knees and cant just kill him without making him stand on knees? hope i explained right)
Stuff that normally can't accidently be killed (plot/story immortality) no longer are protected!
My advice is to go on adventures with mortal followers (.ini changed), and when back in town (or you have quest dependent NPCs around) turn off the .ini change.
Your mod working perfectely, thank you my friend.👍😊
For those who it doesn't work, maybe you use it like me "mod organizer 2", you will then have to modify the "Skyrim.ini" not in "my game" but the one used by Modorganizer, located by default something like this: C:\Users\myname\AppData\Local\ModOrganizer\Skyrim Special Edition
This is really for 'Hard Core' gamers who want 'Ultimate Realism'...and don't care if the questlines get wrecked. Everyone can die = a lot of important people die!
This method does not work. Maybe in earlier versions of the game it could work, but it definitely doesn't work on SE or AE. Personally, I basically don't have a "Skyrim.ini" file, only "Skyrim default" in which all the same items as in the above file, but it doesn't work.
The method 100% works. You are even aware that you were editing the wrong file in the wrong directory.....but still chose to complain that my instructions don't work.....
I don't have any other files, if you have the AE version, then specify exactly where you made edits. Because even on the Internet it is indicated that editing a file does not give 100% mortality to all NPCs. I just didn't find any alternatives.
It 100% works. It is not a mod = the game CAN'T override its own ini settings.
My guess is that you modified/created the skyrim.ini in the wrong folder, OR you didn't put the 'bEssentialTakeNoDamage=0' (without the ' ') underneath the [GamePlay] section (or you made a second GamePlay section, not realizing that it already exists in the .ini file).
It's slightly inconvenient that I need to undo and then redo it every time I want to NOT kill my opponent in a brawl (for some reason it upsets people if I publicly beat Mikael to death), but that one minor hang-up aside, this has been outstandingly helpful. Thank you.

You are likely either NOT in the Documents folder, or you edited SkyrimPrefs.ini instead.

In fact, pretty sure they'll try to kill you!
So all the things you are requesting = impossible while using this method.

Seriously?
It will be something like 'C:\Users\UserName\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition' I can't be more clear than that!

Hmmm, I wonder if someone could include it into an MCM option.....THAT would be helpful!
