Version 2.1
Removed edits from broken roofs - otherwise the holes looked bad once the roof was covered with snow
Version 2.0
added version 2 and 3
Have you ever noticed how all shacks of Skyrim, even those that aren't supposed to be falling apart, have big gaps in their roofs so that it doesn't look like they should provide much shelter? I tried to fix it by editting the texture of some of the meshes involved. It's my very first attempt at tweaking meshes and textures so I am sure it needs improvement, so any advice is welcome.
A few more notes: - I have used a texture that was previously meant for docks; my first choice would have been the same as the shacks' walls, but it looks wrong and transparent once applied to the roof; - I only editted the "unbroken" parts of the roof; those that had by design some large hole ended up looking wrong with the new texture, so I left them vanilla (one can assume the smaller, gaping chunks of wood are what's left once you remove the bigger planks, I guess); - and yes, the optimal solution would have been editting the shiproof01.dds file (the one used for shack roofs in vanilla), filling the gaps with something that looks natural. It's not something I can do right now so I decided to publish this version anyway.
UPDATE: following trinityfang's advice (thanks!!!) I removed transparency from the meshes so that the same texture as the walls can be used correctly. Since I was at it I also checked how the vanilla texture looked without trasparency and it's not bad - actually it's more consisten as it follows the same pattern as the broken parts, and I checked it is still rain-proof. I am keeping all three available since I made them anyway, but most likely I'll be using the third.
By the way - I noticed that most shacks are indeed in poor conditions; restoring them is beyond the scope of this mod that is just about meshes, not location edits. The new meshes of course also apply to any mod that uses the vanilla ShackKit, so if you are using any shack mod, it'll be less leaky as well!
By the way - if rain is still coming in, check that you have set bUsePrecipitationOcclusion=1 If leaves are flying in and it makes little sense with this mod, this could be helpful.
