Hello, following your tutorial, I manage to make a wig from an npc overhaul mod and wear it, but I have some issues:
1. There is no texture applied even though the original mod is installed. 2. The actual hair mod consist of several meshes (base, baseHL, braid, and braidHL), there is one more mesh in the folder called scalp, not sure if it's part of the hair mod. So far I only managed to make a wig from the base mesh without the braid
How can I resolve these? Sorry if it's lacking details, it's my first time doing this.
Hi, im sorry if i made a mistake but i don't know what to do. Every time i try loading my hair in CK it says the the SkinInstance is missing a skeleton root node in Part 2 Step 5. To clarify, i am trying to turn Serana's custom hair from the Simply Serana mod into a wig
Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. I was able to make my own and, with your reply to another about a crash and mesh likely being the culprit, I was also able to fix one that was causing that by rebuilding it so everything works!
I saw a skywig mod in Bethesda for xb users, it had the link to this tutorial. On xb we don't need KS hairdo's installed. Any way to make the wigs standalone and not dependable on ks hair mod for pc as well?
This tutorial, and my wig mods, only creates new meshes and requires the textures from KS Hairdoes. This was done at the request of Kalilies, the author of KS Hairdos. Without the textures, the wigs won't work.
I ran into something I'm not sure what the solution is (if there is one). On step 3 of the tutorial, it says to right-click "BSDynamicTriShape" after expanding 0 NiNode. The wig I was hoping to add does not have BSDynamicTriShape in either the regular nif, or the hairline; just NiTriShape. I tried doing the same steps and completed the tutorial, but the hair doesn't look right in-game (a few parts of the mesh are missing).
The hair is called Serenity, which Karliah uses in "Bijin NPCs" mod, which I've never seen available as a wig anywhere. That mod is kind of on the old side now, so I'm not sure if it's using some older way in NifSkope or something; that's really beyond my expertise.
Hi there I followed your tutorial step by step to get a hair I ported from oldrim to SE as a wig. I managed to make it appear perfectly inside my inventory but when I go to equip it on either myself or my followers the games crashes. Any ideas of how I could fix this? Thanks for your time.
A crash points to the mesh as an issue. I would double check it and maybe just recreate the mesh.
There were some hairstyles that would always crash no matter what I did. There were very few of these and they normally had multiple parts that had to be combined together. After spending a lot of time trying, I finally had to give up. It's possible you may have run into one of these stubborn hairstyles.
The hair I ported is just one part no Hairline or anything like that, but like you said it must be a very stubborn hair because it doesn't want to be worn at all.
Hi there! I followed your tutorial to make wigs for a follower that I made who has a custom hair color... That hair color doesn't come through when I give her the wigs, her hair turns a different color. I'm trying to figure out what I did wrong, but it occurred to me that these wigs might not work with custom hair colors. I thought I'd reach out and ask. Thanks for your time!
The hair color is "suppose" to match the vanilla hair color of the NPC. However, for some reason, for some NPCs, it applies a different color. I suspect it's the same issue that you're seeing. I've spent a lot of time trying to track down the cause but have never resolved it. The answer must be buried within the deepest recesses of Skyrim's code. I hear it's a dark and frightening place, full of objects that fly around with gentlest nudge and dead dragon skeletons that follow you to the ends of Tamriel.
Ah no worries! I think I'm going to just get rid of her custom hair color and then it will match. Thank you for responding so quickly. I really appreciate this tutorial!
Is it safe to make wigs that have HDT-SMP enabled? I'm aware of how buggy it is to change the NPC's hair, so I was going to try to create wigs and distribute them with SPID
Is it safe to make HDT-SMP wigs? Yes, though I'm not sure how to do that. I've looked into it a bit but never quite figured it out.
Is it safe to have them in your game? That depends. Lots of NPCs running around with HDT-SMP can tax your system and cause issues. How many you can have in the game at once depends on your system and other mods. I got tired of their bugginess and, in my opinion, unrealistic movement, and stopped using them.
I decided to just rip the wigs straight from KS Hairdo's optional file that contains them already made. I made my own plugin with them and used SPID to distribute them *only a few* NPCs. The indeed have them in their inventory, but they will not equip them unless I force them to with console commands >.>
Once I figure out to get SPID to force the NPCs to equip them, I will be happy. This will be easier/more compatible than creating outfits and overriding NPCs' outfits, so I'm going to save that as a last resort.
On the bright side, if I do end up making outfits, I can give them whatever I want so it's not all bad.
Sounds like a good plan. It would be interesting to see how well it works when you're done. You could always post the mod on Nexus. You have my permission to use any resources from my mods. Just gather any other permissions you need from other mod authors.
As it would turn out, I have to actually distribute outfits with SPID for the NPCs to actually equip them. It was either give them the wigs and remake their vanilla outfits or choose my own. I ended up deciding to give them Apachii Maid Armor outfits with the wigs! I'm not sure if I'm going to upload it to the nexus yet, but if I do, I will leave instructions so people can change the outfits/wigs to whatever they want depending on what mods they have and also distribute to new NPCs.
If you would like the file to see what I did I can send it to you, but I'm sure you could figure it out on your own quite easily. I just watched a tutorial on how to use SPID and then created the outfits with the wigs in CK.

Thanks anyway
I do have a question though, what do I do when a wig also has a .tri file in meshes?
