On December 28 2009 the first version of Companion Vilja for Oblivion was released. Today, exactly seven years later, here is the SE-version of Vilja in Skyrim.
It has taken us some time to get her ready for release, mainly for cosmetic reasons; the mod includes many unique npcs with unique faces, and the SE light setting were not treating them kindly. We had especially problems with Vilja's little sister Tindra, who has a completely unique head.
But, now the mod is ready and I hope you will enjoy it.
This add-on will make Vilja more immersive in Solstheim. Requires Vilja in Skyrim and Dragonborn.esm. You'll find the add-on among main files in the files section for this mod.
Please note that you have to be on the Mainland of Skyrim for the add-on to initiate! If you start out in Solstheim, you won't experience any of the changes until you have been back on the Skyrim mainland.
Thanks to all of you, Vilja did the almost impossible.
Vilja was released late in the eveing of 28th of December. Only 72 HOURS!!! after the release, she ended up on a honorable second place in the mod of the month list for december, only a few votes behind the winner. Who would have thought that such a thing would be at all possible? And, had she been released on day earlier, maybe she would even had won? I still haven't fully recovered from that happy surprise, but I sincerely want to thank all of you who voted for her. It's heartwarming to know that so many of you are still enjoying her company after all these years .
MISSING INGREDIENTS LIST at the beginning of Vilja's first quest.
I posted this reply earlier, but it has slided to a previous page, so I'm simply re-posting it as a sticky:
There seems to be a problem with this list (obviously also with the book), however, it's only with the *item*, the quest will proceed normally. I have checked, and I actually did set up this item a bit different than what I then continued to do with other things, so I don't believe there will be any upcoming problems; it's just the item itself that is missing. We will of course eventually fix this up, but as the mod-size is so big and this problem so tiny, we want to wait a little and see if there are other problems that we can sort out the same time. For instance, there seems to be a mod conflict for a limited number of players that have problems with her lightbringing spell, it would be nice if we could do something about this.
So, at the moment, we hope you agree that the inconvenience is so small with having to consol the list that we can wait a little before we make an update.
The list: 2 Taproot 1 Small pearl 3 Slaughterfish scales 2 Mammoth tusks 2 Fly amantia 1 Mudcrab chitin
console if you want the list itself (not necessary): player.additem XX03E7FC 1 (replace the XX with the first two digits that you see when you select Vilja in the console) --------------
FIX FOR CORRUPT FORMLIST
If you for instance remove a mod that includes armor that you have assign to Vilja's wardrobe, her formlists might be corrupted. It has happened in the original Vilja-version and can surely happen in SE, too. But, luckily there is an easy fix for this. It is available in the main section of the downloads, so if you should have unexpected problems with her wardrobe, download it and follow the instructions.
Looking for a little help. Vilja's father has disappeared. We were in the Telvanni tower and her dad would not come out of it. I tried many times, leaving her outside while I went in to get him to no avail. So, I dismissed him to home and now the dialog for him to come back is not there. I was hoping to get another heavy suit of Wolfcry Armor from him. Is there a way to "reset" him or something?
You only get 3 sets heavy armour once. One for you Vilja and her father. You can add more armour via the console. Make sure he is not added via another follower framework mod (AFT, NFF etc). You can get a summon spell from him if you talk to him. If Vilja dad is dismissed to his home. Talk to Vilja look into the dialogue tree and tell Vilja to invite her father for adventure. I think you can find that in Married Life dialogue if not that look around in the dialogue. You will find his dad again Dawnstar inn after you tell Vilja for the invite.
Well, I got married to her. This was a comprehensive...lengthy courting process.
She is now settled in Solitude... Where she actually expressed jelousy in the fact that Jordis lives there. A nice touch. I hope she spends my septims in the market... I have too many. :)
**
Unlike many folks, I had 0 technical glitches... ZERO. I struggled with 2 missions for my own fault (did not read instructions, and struggled with the marriage... I wish I could take Maramal to Boethia. It would be worth swearing fealty to a Daedra, if I get to kill Maramal... no single NPC is more infuriating that the guy who singularly controls ever damn wedding in the realm, but wont explain why he wont marry you)
Maramal Rant over...
I would love to provide some feedback, if wanted.
All of her "subsystems" worked flawlessly. I basically used her every "feature"... The wardrobe being the most cumbersome and inconsistent. The Ostim patch works, but there is something disconcerting to making love to the most talkative NPC in the whole realm, but she has nothing to say after I invite her to come to bed early(sex). Nothing. She has more to say when I step on her toes after a FastTravel. Rather disappointing.
I am quite sure I will never play her again, not because she isn't cool, and feature full, but because her quests are so time consuming (literally TIME is the trigger for much of the dialogue and quests). I dedicated 3 days for this Romance mod. She is a DOLL, but the build up (IMHO) is very long. And her lack of ANY expression of intimacy, even after marriage feels wrong... makes me feel like a simp who has done every thing for her, and she cant even offer the occasional kiss or shoulder rub. I even expected her to say something connected to "traditional values" so that intimacy was completely off the table till a marriage, but she does not. Intimacy is simply NEVER discussed...
Due to the structure of the game/dialogues... she controls the entire flow of the relationship. The player is never given an option to kiss, touch, etc. The "hug" is so lame I would rather get a Kiss offer with a back screen,, than to see that "hug" that looks like two dolls (ken and barbie) with arms folded the right way being handled by a 12 year old playing princess. It is not the fault of the developer, but I would simply remove that feature entirely.
Overall, 9/10 as a companion/follower... high utility 4/10 as a Romantic pursuit ... it is "barely" romance imho. It is simp simp simp till she marries you and then makes no reference to intimacy (from back rubs to actual sex, there is a complete lack of it in commentary). It actually surprised me how the author who was so detailed in so many interactions/tools/features decided to avoid the topic entirely during the many hours of Quests and time together.
Vilja DOES sit on your lap, and that is very neat... but again, just like a manipulative woman would. Not saying she is actually manipulative, but that is the end result... that is how it FEELS to the player who spends so much time doing her every bidding and getting platitudes in return. And the entire time during the "courtship" she refers to you as a "friend". IRL, that is what women do to stave off an advance but not lose contact with a man. I would say the lap sitting combined with calling you a "best friend" is manipulative. But I am getting picky.
Secondarily, and perhaps even more relevant... she changes the pace of the game...completely. She is the ONLY NPC (romanceable or not) who is constantly asking to NOT go somewhere. She wants to stay home, or swim, or sit by the fire. Sounds nice, but it effectively changes the pace of the gameplay. Good/Bad... personal choice. But it should be noted. Once you agree to take her as a follower, and if you wish to pursue a romantic track, you basically give up on regular Skyrim questing, and your life just consists of tending to her every whim (or risk failing the Romance quest). It is pleasant-ish and entertaining, but it is very different.
Her dialogue... is SECOND TO NONE... she seems to have endless voice lines. I had her configured to be allowed to speak as much as she wanted, and I could not believe the amount of content she has. She will idle speak for a couple of hours without repeating dialogue lines. VERY impressive.
Frankly, as an NPC, she is so feature full, that you would expect many other NPCs to be released since her release, re-using much of the tools, and only updating storyline/voice acting. Her "engine" is like no other NPC out there. I thought Lyssia had plenty of lines, but compared to Vilja, Lyssia is illiterate. Very impressive.
I hope this helps someone taking a look at Vilja for a possible playthrough. I am going back to skyrim and try to "go to bed early" with Vilja(ostim patch installed)... I freaking earned it.
Once married a new dialogue option becomes available with plenty of "intimate" options. Her random romantic dialogue is often conditioned to play only in "safe" locations like a player home, but sometimes, out of the blue, in a cold cave or out on the Tundra, she will ask you to give her a hug. Don't do that with your weapons ready though because it can cause your player animations to glitch. She has told my PC she loves them more times than I can count since the wedding so I'm not sure what's going on in a game save where it is not present. Post coital banter is always nice and a "You've done well" could never hurt but as was said by khito07, without an add-on patch that "listens" for the mechanics of an adult animation sequence completion to trigger dialogue, it just isn't going to happen without a third party patch. C'est la vie!
Although her Serana comments are a bit mean spirited and continue even after she has cured herself. The Serana Dialogue Add-on mod actually references this fact which is relatively amusing. I'm just glad Sindra doesn't join in on the Undead jokes. Since AE I haven't had as much luck with the Wardrobe part of her outfit system as I have in the past. Not sure why but I've got at least her outfits working fine so I can have her switch easily through dialogue. Can't imagine facing the dangers of Skyrim without her, FULL bore comment frequency and all. Killing her wimpy ex-boyfriend is always SO satisfying. But I digress. Again.
I gather you have not done much troubleshooting before, I am fairly new to this modding thing too...
"wont open".. wont open a save file, or wont open skyrim entirelly?
If it wont open your save file, you probably have some corruption in it from installing/removing other mods. if it wont open Skyrim itself, you probably want to run Loot to see if anything easy pops up (like an LE mod being loaded in to an SE/AE install)
Loot can give you other clues too, such as orphaned records. You can deal with them using xEdit (SSEEdit)
And you should be using MO2 to manage your modding... slightly tougher learning curve than the Nexus client, but superior in every way for regular use.
yeah, I used MO2, and installed it according to the instructions but when I ran SKSE it just wouldn't open .. and other thing,,this vilja mod was detected "form 43" my version skyrim is 1.170,, maybe this mod doesn't not like my skyrim version LOL
I am not aware of any other Skyrim mods that come close to Vilja in terms of context-appropriate comments. Sofia is close (and I do like the Sofia mod) but that mod has a bit too much fourth wall-breaking. Vilja breaks the fourth wall rarely, if ever. Of the companion mods I have played, It is most like FONV's Willow and FO4's Heather in that regard. All three of these mods (i.e., Vilja, Willow and Heather) add a believable, lore-friendly story with, to reiterate what I said above, lots of context-appropriate comments.
I agree. I thought Sofia was great, until I "met" Vilja. Then I realized how many of Sofia's 'funny' lines were actually more cringy than funny. Sofia hasn't aged well, Vilja has. Sofia made me laugh; Vilja won my heart.
Branmakmuffin, Willow, and Heather are great, and Willow and Vilja have much in common. For other in-depth characters, you might try the Serana Add-on Dialogue mod and the Rigmor series. Interesting NPCs also have some fun characters and fun quests.
Another opinion. Both Heather and Willow are great. However, I extremely dislike SDA. It turns Serana into some kind of teen age waifu. It also changes her iconic Laura Bailey voice. I recommend Serana Dialogue Expansion. It's still a bit of a WIP. But it expands her dialogue almost as much as SDA and keeps her "warrior princess" vibe intact and best of all, it uses LB's voice.
Lyssia and Sophia come close... But Vilja is without equal in sheer volume I was fixing a water heater, took me about 1.5 hours... and I had my headphones on the entire time. In my headphones I had skyrim, and Vilja was next to me... For the entire 1.5 hours, she did not repeat ONE comment. She is the chattiest girl in Skyrim for sure. All jokes aside, the audio library is without peer in the world of Followers.
I should say that Katana had a decent context sensitive dialogue... but I could not bear the lesbian moral fagging she pushed on me (the author gives you a path that appears to lead to romance, but then pulls the rug from under you and then gives a moral lesson directly targeted at heterosexual males, all the while accepting your help and gifts... she deleted/blocked my posts when I pointed out that SHE created the script). Uninstalled after 2 hours.
And though I realize it is a matter of personal opinion, I find Vilja's voice absolutely incredible. If a woman with that voice approached me, I would ask for her hand in marriage on the spot. She is a doll.
She is a better wife than girlfriend by far, EVEN though tonight she told me she had a headache when I asked for us to go to bed. ROFL.
little does she know that Astrid is in Whiterun waiting for me. (yes... you can have multiple wives)
No need to be a dong about it. but yes the mod likely isn't for OP if he cant get over the rough mic quality at times. I mean it used to be so bad that Emma went and redid a bunch of voice lines because of it.
That being said this mods is amazing and she feels and sounds more Norse than most of the nords in this game. (because she is)
Skyrim Nords are not Earth Norse any more than Bretons are French (or whatever). They sound the way they are supposed to. That said, I do like Vilja's voice.
I think one of the very few things I would change in this mod is to remove the "Ouch! I'm so clumsy" line. It screams "abused", to me, and the idea of Vilja as physically abused tears at my heart.
Then I reflect that if Halvdan had his way, she would have been, and I'm GLAD I cut his head off outside the Temple of Mara.
As far as I noticed. This line is trigger when you step over an object. NPC reacts to DB when they step over random clutters "What are you doing!" If DB steps on random object and Vilja is nearby she will respond with "Was it my fault?" If she steps on it she will react those line about being clumsy.
Ok, I blew it; I took Heneri to Hlaluu farm without talking to Vilja first, and am now unable to find, summon or reset her. I get a message that says I can't summon her now. Any idea how I can get this squared away, please?
Actually, be sure you go to Dawnstar and speak to Wilbert first. That should set you on the path to tracking down some thugs to the west near the dragon burial mound in the Pale. The thugs will then update the quest to rescue Vilja from the wreck of the Brinehammer. It's entirely possible that she won't be present until those earlier quest stages have been triggered. I've done the exact same thing you did, but I always at least spoke to Wilbert first and things fired as they should from there.
I did the exact same thing Blindly took Heneri back to the farm... all was well, I thought.
Now I cant summon Vilja... she is gone. Wilbert has NO dialog lines.
I visited the site of the Brinehammer, she is not there.
I do not have any failed quests.
It was such a simple mistake (not looking at the quest to know that I had to speak with her first). I honestly assumed she was following us when I started heading for Windhelm.
Pretty frustrating.
The FAQ makes no mention of this quest breaking situation. And I am surprised only ONE poster before me asked the question.
WTF do I do? I have kept playing the game... really dont want to go back to an older save (pre-event). I assumed she would just pop again at home.
Before escorting Henri to her daughter. Vilja will leave the party. She will mention about letter from Wilbert and want to travel alone to Dawnstar. After escorting Henri, talk to her and she tell you to go to Vilja she has bad feeling about Vilja safety. At Dawnstar Inn talk to Wilbert (Disable/Enable him if the dialogue doesn't appear). Once you talk to him about Vilja whereabouts. Take the main road and travel on you way to Mortal but shortly before near that small Noric ruin or Dwemer you will fight against three Nords. Check their pockets and look for a letter that will mention where Vilja is.
You gotta do in steps to unlock Vilja in Brinehammer. If she is not there reload your last save.

MOD OF THE MONTH -
