I did some testing between Immersive Sounds Compendium (ISC), Equus, and Aggressive Horse Sounds (same as Horse Sound Overhaul).

If anyone's interested, these are the notes on my results:

    • Equus seems most fitting (imo) if used with a lighter built horse model, such as Oblivion Horses, SC - Horses, or one of the many other slim horse mod options. If you're using one of these, I would recommend giving Equus total overwrite priority.
    • If you're using the vanilla horse model, zzjay's, or Light Horses of Skyrim, I'd recommend letting Aggressive Horse Sounds overwrite Equus.
    • Equus is a vanilla sound replacer, so the horse footsteps are rather one-note. Riding over different types of terrain will sound noticeably unrealistic and unresponsive, just like vanilla with no mods. If that sort of thing bothers you, then you do not need a patch for ISC. If you don't use ISC, then installing Improved Horse Step Sounds will help to resolve this.
    • If you prefer Equus's vanilla-based horse footsteps, then you will need a patch. Either copy-paste the audio files into the ISC file path, or just go in xEdit and copy the vanilla records for horse footstep sounds into a new ESPFE and let it overwrite ISC (I did the latter).

    Conclusion:

    • No matter what your setup or preferences are, Equus is worth installing either alone or mixed with these other mods because it covers sounds that are completely neglected by the rest. A very well done replacer!

I've made an edited version of this today with reduced volumes on many of the sounds, notably the loud idles (much quieter fart!), attack sounds, and etc. Easy drag and drop, safe to install, plus includes a .txt file of slightly more specific changes. Waiting on permission from Sata to post publicly/seeing if they are inactive, but feel free to message me whenever if you see this and I have not posted a link yet!

Sata suggested hosting the edited files in the main files section, so feel free to check it out there if you're interested in the changes that I made!

When using Footsteps Sounds Overhaul, it mutes the horse sounds aside from the horse's footsteps. Is there a way to use both?

    Hello,

Can we get some sounds introduced for the horses? Such as the Dwarven horse? This mod doesn't add for the undead horse either.

    Cheers!

No sadly, i am experiencing that bug aswell recently, it has something to do with loading LOD that the footsteps either you or your horse struggle to keep up

Is there a patch for this and Immersive Sounds Compendium? ISC blocks this mod from changing the horse footsteps.

I like the sounds added by this mod but good god I have to uninstall it. The sounds the horses make are f*#@ing CONSTANT and they don't shut up. It makes being around horses and absolute chore with their back to back puffing, snorting, neighing, kicking dirt, back to puffing, snorting on and on and on. If there is a way to disrupt the frequency of these sounds, I'd reactivate this mod in heart beat. Maybe replace 75% of the sounds with silent 10 or 15 second audio files.

My solution was to remove the idle sounds this mod has and keep the rest.

Lol i didn't think it was that bad, until i got to the Windhelm stables and could barely hear myself think.  Removing the idles does wonders.

the sounds are amazing, but the horses make the sound constantly. This is especially a little over the top when there are multiple horses around the player. Is there a way so the horse sounds is not constantly?

I like the sounds itself, but the horses now do CONSTANT noises. Sounds like they're on drug-induced frenzy :)

I feel like this wasn't the case before. I assume I would've noticed the literal constant, without break frequency before.

I'm having the same issue! Not sure what's going on but the horses simply will not stop making noise. It's very aggravating.

I'm making a massive RDR2 inspired Horse Overhaul bundle for personal use for Xbox One/X/S. I have this in it as the sounds for them. I keep getting an archive failure when the creation kit gets to the audio files. Any idea how I could fix that?

Nevermind Riley's version doesn't let me archive it. But I can archive the main version. Also Don't worry I will never Publish the horse overhaul bundle I'm making.

if it says Archive Process Failed you can try one of these workarounds

      • be sure the name of your .bsa is the same as the .esp file
      • Creation Kit fixes or Unofficial Creation Kit Patch for AE
      • directly use "Archive.exe" in the skyrim folder to do it instead (steamapps/common/skyrim special edition/Archive.exe)
      hope it helps

Well I've decided to use the main version for the bundle. But now I can't archive the Aggressive horse sounds for the Draft horses. I'm gonna try to use the Unofficial Creation Kit patch. Thank you for the quick reply.

Can't pre-archive when porting to Xbox if doing Meshes and textures together. The patch allowed me to use all the Idle animations and 8 of the rear up animations for Horse Overhaul Sounds. So I guess that's good enough. It ain't worth losing anymore sleep over. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.
