Short version This fix is not needed in version 1.5.97.
Long version I did some digging into 1.5 and found that
a) it does indeed have this bug, but b) it never seems to cause a crash.
These contradictory findings led me to an unexpected discovery: The original HDT-SMP actually fixed this bug years ago, but the 1.6 update broke it again.
So, if you're running any version of (Faster) HDT-SMP for 1.5.97, you already have this fix.
My theory (after 19 years of modding Bethesda games) is this: If you have a superheavy mod load (like 2000+ mods) physics on top of this tends to cause CTD, regardless of using this crash fix or not. The game engine is too overloaded to begin with. And on top of this, physics adds to this load. And on top of this is the fact that the game engine has a lot of bugs to begin with. You get to a point where you have to ask yourself. Is physics and the problems on a heavy load order worth it? I chose to not run physics, and my game seems to be much more stable. It' s a shame as hair physics adds to the immersion. But oh well.
K4H advice to change to an earlier version that wasn't designed to work with 1.6.1170, is a half measure that may have worked for some but clearly not all. According to the mods own author, version 2.2.1 is for GOG and outdated Skyrim versions; and this too will lead to issues with 1.6.1170 down the line regardless of if it lessens crashes for some players. This is true for any version of FSMP that isn't designed for the version of Skyrim you have installed.
Since I am guessing most people are not playing on GOG, this really shouldn't be the go-to for "fix" for most players.
At this point in time, I have to assume SMP-Crash Fix is bugged with current Faster HDT-SMP, and the latest version of Skyrim. It's up to both of these authors to fix their mods, and communicate which versions are stable for which versions. Not to mention nexus posts are now disabled on the FSMP mod page, which doesn't make this any easier.
Hopefully a proper fix will come around soon for 1.6.1170, and until then we will live with occasional crashes, or play a different version of Skyrim.
I use 2.5.0 which is in the last v6 version of Nolvus. Works like a charm. No CTDs and i am practically begging for it. With larger modlists it can happen regardless but if you don't have consistent crashes from this mod on any other version than 2.5.1 i say use it. Btw you can also use 1 other which i'm fairly sure it would work because 1.18 is in the Eldergleam modlist if you are on 1.5.97.
Version 2.2.1 of Faster-HDTSMP supposedly works with this but that's for GOG. I, and assumedly most, have Steam. Anyone tried different versions? I'm gonna try 2.2.0. I'll let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed.
2.2.1 actually has a 1.6.1170 option in the FOMOD as well as other AE versions :) The forum CTD entry refers to a few people using this over 2.5.1 with this mod!
It definitely works, I'm able to get through racemenu with no issues, physics working etc. I have however started to get the very crash this is supposed to fix, where seemingly at random the arrival of an NPC with hair physics will crash the game.
funny how he made comments disabled on hdt mod page because it was making people invisible and broken. I'm using a version from 2003 and it works flawless. maybe he should just revert back to 2.21 and stop wasting our time. with this new crap..
I run VR and I still crash when I have followers with smp hair when we go in to a building or something, its not every time but its often enough that I think we may still need this fix.
I think I found the solution. Use THIS: "Faster HDT-SMP" link: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/57339 NOT this: "HDT-SMP for VR 1.4.15 v2.2 (BETA)" (it is not stable).
Playing Skyrim VR with KS Hairdos SMP and Vanilla Replacer, the game would CTD every 15 minutes until I uninstalled "HDT-SMP for VR 1.4.15 v2.2 (BETA)". Yes, I was using both versions installed at the same time, that could have induced the CTD, but KS Hairdos SE does not list "Faster HDT-SMP" in dependencies and sometimes mods are only set up to work with specific dependencies. Turns out KS Hairdos SMP runs great with only "Faster HDT-SMP" installed.
I was already running that, never used the 1.4.15 version. However, I'll update to the most recent Faster HDT-SMP and see. I'm trying to add vanilla hair remake.
A lot of people have had crashes while using FSMP 2.5.1 and this mod. As has been mentioned by the guy above, version 2.2.1 of FSMP doesn't have that problem and works perfectly. And for the original question, the changelogs of FSMP don't mention anything that indicates this crash fix has become unnecessary.
I'm curious why a prolific mod such as FasterHDT-SMP can't simply patch their own mod but instead the author links to this fix; and as with many mods, this is the case, thus bloating the modlist to epic proportions when so many mods require you download someone else's patch; not even for compatibility, just so that it works. I get it if it's a recent change, but that's not the case here.
I'm in the process of preparing Skyrim for a relatively lightweight 2025 play-through with Vanilla+ mods, and it's already getting to the point where I'm annoyed by the needlessly convoluted nature of modding Skyrim. I've recently played through all the Witcher games, started a modded Cyberpunk 2077 playthrough, played a ton of older modded games, nothing comes close to being as asinine to mod as Skyrim.
To avoid a janky modded game, my rule is if what the mod author's doing doesn't make sense, then it likely isn't a good idea to install their mod, but I don't want to pass up having some proper hair and cloak physics in Skyrim; however, I've yet to see a hair mod that hasn't got the wind from behind blowing my Nord's luscious locks through the back of his head.
Download xedit and patch it yourself. Updating it would involve everyone else having to update the file and delete this mod. That's probably more frustrating than one person, you, downloading and activating this.

it crashes when I select a hair with physics on the racemenu
"Fixes a random crash when loading NPCs with SMP hair"
I would definitely say that you would want this for your hair.
Edit: And the Dumbest Internet Comment of 2025 goes to me :P
The logs seemed to point to Faster HDT-SMP, which led me down the path to here after visiting that mods forum.
Was thankfully easy for me to resolve as I had only recently added that mod, and I hadn't seen the issue prior.
