You start with basic shoes, and the starter sword is random. Both Depend on general difficulty.
Go to island east and grab the walnut.
Enter Leo's hut and give it to the parrot.
Return, and go North. Chop enough wood for a chest.
Open the gift (if you haven't).
Place the chest near your tent, and store anything you won't use.
Unlocking Island West
To unlock island west you need 10 walnuts.
You can find walnut spots in the wiki, but i've also compiled them here:
Go up north. Dig the circled zone
Go left, you'll enter a hidden zone
Go back and dig these spots:
Go up, and dig this zone:
Reach the volcano, dig here:
Then walk down, you'll find a hid... -
Accessing the volcano's tool shop
There's a trader in the volcano, above the water pool. You need to speak dwarvish, however.
To learn dwarvish, do any of these:
Find a diamond OR prismatic shard
Find 5 gems*
Collect 20 ores*
Crush 30 rocks*
*= On easy difficulty, amount is halved. On hard difficulty, it's double.
The day after completing these conditions, you'll be able to speak.
(Once you unlock the resort, the dwarf will be replaced by a pirate in the cove.)
Recovery/tool shop and opening geodes
For this, you must unlock the Pirate cove. On days that pirates visit, you can find:

- Save any mixed seeds you find. You'll need them for Gourmand's crop requests
- Plant the parsnips as soon as you unlock west. DON'T build the coop until you've harvested them all
- Focus on unlocking: west, farnhouse, bridge, and resort. This is because the bridge allows you to save Prof. Snail, and in turn unlock field office
- Dig up all ginger. Resources are scarce and you'll need them for the volcano
- When upgrading your bag (pirate cove), go with at least 50% stamina.
- Get at least 1 furnace before upgrading resort
- (Hint) If you like crafting rings, save the mahogany seeds and check the island trader often
